Persona 5 Won't Be Out In North America Until February 2017

Sorry, Persona fans: you won’t be dating new waifus and husbandos until next year. Atlus announced today that Persona 5 will be out in North America on February 14, 2017.

That’s five months after Japan gets the fifth Persona, and it might come as a bummer to North American gamers who hoped to go on cat burglary dates this year. On the plus side, at least now we have plenty of time for FFXV?

Ugh, Kotaku.

The Game Informer story on the release date is so much better.

I think Amazon just put up the page early or something. There's no way it sold out already and I don't even think it's meant to be limited.

Amazon usually doesn't put up their entire LE stock at one time. They'll randomly put it up until one batch sells out and then continue to do that. It allows for everyone that wants one to at least have a shot at it.

if by that you mean

- never look at any forums other than gaf (not that I haven't been spoiled on games here)
- be extremely careful with gaf's search function
- REALLY don't look at twitch chat or youtube comments or twitter or any other unmoderated space on the internet

then yeah sure I guess I could bury my head in the sand for half a year. This game is massively more anticipated than P4 as well.

Hope to god there isnt a "Bitches and whores" meme... thats what spoiled persona 4 for me. But i wasnt too bothered by it as the story was still good. (not as bad as MGS 4 and TPP being spoiled)

Its mindblowing that a company as bis as Sega/Atlus still can't get their shit together for Europe.

It was funny for some time but im getting really pissed at this point how they are treating their EU customer.

Watch them region-lock the NA version. That would be a chucklefest right there.

Atlus what the fuck

They should've asked Sony for help.

EDIT: LOL I just realized that's Valentine's day. That's actually brilliant.

I find it baffling that some people are complaining about the LE in the first few pages, this is one of the nicest CE´s they have done so far. Sure, the Japanese LE is sleek, but I think that content wise this one is really great. Also this is the first time we get a Steelbook for a SMT/Persona game.

At any rate, glad I managed to pre-order it, even though I´ll be playing the japanese version, I gotta add this to my collection.

I ordered the CE but I'm actually not sure I even want it. A bag that'll just take up space, the token tiny art book, a soundtrack that'll probably be half of the full soundtrack, a steelbook that'll probably have cover art less cool than the normal box... I guess the plush could be cool, but this seems like your standard "junk you'll have lying around until you toss it" CE. Might downgrade to the standard edition.

Well fuck...missed the pre-order even though Amazon says I can still "pre-order" it now. I really hope they put more up today. Might have to go through Gamestop or somewhere else if that doesn't happen.

Edit: ^give it to meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Fuck
Fuck
Fuck

God dammit

It would have been such a perfect Winter game.
And even more annoying is that we're gonna have to dodge spoilers from people who've played the Japanese version for 5 months.

Ugh.

Do we know if there dual audio yet? If so, the delay is especially unsurprising. Atlus JP: "6 month delay or region lock. Those are the options! Or both"

You know, maybe we wouldn't be seeing so many goddamn delays if devs didn't announce their games so early. I'll hand it to Bethesda; last year they announced Fallout 4, said a date, and stuck with it.

I liked how P3 and P4 were announced in March and released a few months later in July, but now we've been waiting since 2013 for no good reason.

Give it to me then, I can't pre-order it for some reason

I do have to wonder how the Japanese office feels about the U.S. one and what level of integration they have?

Are they brought into the main dev process at all?

Yeah, they could definitely do better. I still kind of want it though.

I bet they won't include the Japanese audio. I feel it in my loins. Atlus gonna Atlus and force us to settle with the Western dub.

Wasn't there a huge wait between 2 and 3 and that a much shorter wait between 3 and 4?

The short wait between 3 and 4 was because 4 reused tons of assets.

Hopefully Persona 6 will just reuse all the new assets from P5, hell they should make a console SMT game while they are at it. Though Atlus' handheld platform game is strong.

They've got almost a year ... there should be zero reason for a special edition to sell out lol I can't even see it on Amazon.

I can learn to be fluent in Japanese in just a few months right? Right?! All those 'it's 100% coming out in 2015!!!' posts are hilarious (sad, so sad) now.

Maybe it has already been said but they said this on US PS Blog:

Now, even after all that, if you still are thinking: “Why 2017!? You promised us 2015, and then 2016! Now it’s 2017?!!!?!” Well, the biggest factor in the 2017 release date is attention to detail. When we show off Persona 5 footage at E3 next week (Next week!), I think you’ll understand what we mean. We’re making sure every bit is in place. Persona has exponentially grown as a franchise, and considering that this is our first numbered sequel since 2008, ATLUS is taking its time to ensure this is the best possible experience.

5 months is actually pretty quick by the standards of niche Japanese games localized by small to mid-sized companies, if you compare it to recent releases like Atelier Sophie (6 months,) Senran Kagura Estival Versus (12 months,) Megadimension Neptunia V2 (10 months,) and Danganronpa Ultra Despair Girls (12 months.) Squeenix is probably bigger than all of the companies involved in those games combined (especially outside of Japan) so of course they have the resources for faster localizations.

I don't know Aksys is releasing Blazblue CF not long after Japanese release and the game has a 40 hour long story mode. Not to mention Persona popularity is like on another level compared to those games. It could have been done but I doubt they even tried or in Atlus Japan case just give a fuck.
Yes I'm angry but I'll get over it someday, maybe.

Doesn't bother me, I'm playing in September :p

Props to Atlus USA for keeping their word on the PS3 version of the game. I'm happy about that.

Whether it'll make it to Europe is a different story altogether though...I know NISA wouldn't be opposed to publishing/distributing on PS3 but Sega of Europe or another big publisher with higher costs?

Thats not really something Atlus USA can do, japanese voice actors sometimes give clauses that their voices are not to be used in western media unless they are paid for again, studios say no to it, more money for atlus to put up just to keep the high profile japanese actors.

I suppose it could be worse, they could have announced the release date at the end of a trailer, kinda like they did last year.

Did any of the mentioned games get delayed by over 2 years which should have given a lot of times for script translations, VA recordings, UI translation, etc...?

No, this is just BS way Atlus keeps treating international audience. It's really puzzling considering that a properly marketed release will sell more in the West then JP. Except this is Atlus and they don't even have a European release for their biggest game in last 8 years.

NA release dates
P4 Dec 2008
P5 Feb 2017
8 years 3 months

FF13 Mar 2010
FF15 Sep 2017
7 years 6 months

Shall I see you back here in 2024 for some P6 and FF16 hype?

FFXV is releasing this year, so the gap is actually 6 years and 6 months. And that's ignoring that FFXIV:ARR was released in August 2013, so the gap is just 3 years and 1 month.

Then how do all these niche companies that seem to pull it off with small budget games like Neptunia, Atelier, etc...? Atlus' inability to write proper contracts or unwillingness to pay for JP voice for Western releases because of some fear of reverse import is frankly either stupid or incompetent in 2016.

Personally I would love JP subs but that will not happen either.
