I'm going to have to agree with Dantis on this - The Persona series cutscenes are, unequivocally, shit.

Persona Q reveals an earth-shattering truth about the P4 protagonist in a sidequest

(sidequest spoilers)

His uniform still has a price tag on it. He forgot to take it off.

It quite literally makes you re-evaluate all of Persona 4.

Yu comes across as kind of a dork in PQ. Cool, but a dork nonetheless. It's quite impressive. :p

I always find in interesting, when the fan base has a tendency to project the opposite, (at least in terms of personality ) to how the protagonists are portrayed within the games. Minato is maladjusted. Awkward. Something away from the norm, at the very least. Yu is simply aloof.

...And then fan works go a long way towards convincing you otherwise!

I don't think the games necessarily project that at all; it's subjective. I've never heard someone describe Yu as being aloof until now. I've seen people give multiple interpretations to how the P3/P4 protagonists act and, that's a given, since they were designed to pretty much be blank slates.

What aspect of that specifically, are you drawn to? If it's almost down to the characters, then you're golden (pun, perhaps intended). Just don't expect any great world-building aspects, beyond minor embellishments to what has already been established.

Pretty much the characters. I still want to finish my playthrough of P3P before I get into Q. I gotta get my social link up to 10 for Aigis. Pity I can't enter a relationship with Aigis as the female MC.

As blank as they can be, yet so much can be gleaned from just their animations and (potential) dialogue responses.

Not the P5 news I so desperately wanted, but there's this:
Some interesting info from Dengeki Playstation 20th Anniversary interviews and early Famitsu stuff:

Atlus: Have a new title that has not been announced yet.

So this would probably pertain to the Vita and/or the PS4 (+PS3). It's also most likely either their 2017 game or their brand new IP they talked about earlier this year. Could be Deviliser or Asraga Adventure Chronicle, as well.

As blank as they can be, yet so much can be gleaned from just their animations and (potential) dialogue responses.

Sure, though they're also implicit enough for people to give their own interpretations to them. It's a good thing.

Hey gang, have a Happy Tuesday.

In the words of noted poet Rivers Cuomo of Weezer:

We've come so far, now here we are
We made it through the night
I know we will, be strong, cause still
Everything will be alright

Provided Persona 5 does come out in 2015, is it beyond the realm of possibility that they do the PS2-era thing and just start releasing games with the engine? Like, couldn't a 2017 game be a Persona 6 or a SMT 5? :D

I wonder what they would do a new IP though. So many possibilities.

Definitely. Especially now that they have the engine on PS4, as well. Persona 6 would be much more likely, because I doubt they'd try to take advantage of a short turnaround with a different series (at least for the Persona team).

That reminds me, did they just ditch the Catherine engine that was meant to be used for P5? I know that P5 isn't using it but was it ever used for anything else?

I could see them using the engine again for a non-Persona game. Something in the vein of Digital Devil Saga.

Persona 6 is what I had speculated before because the 2017 game is most likely not a new IP based on the wording in the interview, and it would be in line with the gap between Persona 3 and Persona 4. Either way, it's not like they're not going to reuse the engine they developed in-house for other games than Persona 5. With said engine, it'll likely ease the development process for future Atlus PS3/PS4 titles.

I've seen the P4 protagonist characterized in a variety of different ways; he's pretty much a wildcard when it comes to fan work.

On the other hand, most fan work I've seen has characterized the P3 protagonist as the mild, apathetic—sometimes grouchy individual. Which is funny considering Soejima was aiming to make his design as neutral as possible. Perhaps his initial design left a strong impression on most people (including Atlus, seeing how he's characterized in the P3 movie and PQ)

I always saw him as quiet but kind, personally. Irks the heck out of me when people argue that he's objectively manipulative.

I think P3MC's characterization in P3M suits him the best. He is aloof, serious, but kind.

Atlus should just announce Radiant Historia 2 for the Vita.
I'm ready for another Radiant HIstoria game. It would be a miracle for 2 to come out though ;_;

I won't be surprised if Persona 6 comes out a year within P5's release. It would be like the P3/P4 situation again.

Blu-ray/DVD volume 4 of P4GA is now out, and along with it the new episode depicting the Accomplice ending. So, naturally, spoilers.

Er, well two years. Really don't think it'd be a good idea to release a mainline Persona sequel a single year after its predecessor.

I thought the first game did pretty well? I remember Atlus having to restock this product due to it being sold out everywhere.

From what I've experienced, Persona Q seems to hover around that characterization as well. With some general apathy and maybe a little bit of spaciness.

I thought his characterization was fantastic for the movie and what they were going for, but I think I prefer his characterization in Persona Q. His interactions in PQ are a tad more enjoyable since he's more involved with the group and he's less cold.

That cover is groovin

I wonder how the episode turned out

That might also be what his P3M characterization is as well, however. In P3M#1, he's aloof and apathetic towards others (which is crucial to his character arc), but it's apparent that at the end of that movie, he's gotten closer to the whole group and cares for them. I think PQ is around P3M#3 phase Makoto, so he could totally be like that in the films themselves.

His Persona Q characterization is like straight up from the manga. It's actually pretty awesome. Less apathy, more general spaciness. No wonder the earliest P3 trailers for PQ used "Minato Arisato."

Narukami, in contrast, is pretty much straight out of P4 Arena with the occasional anime silliness.

Hah, I hadn't considered that. It'd be pretty great if he changed to a point where he was practically unrecognizable from how he was like in the first film.

It'd definitely tie into his "Journey" as a human being as well.

That's good to hear. I started with P3 side first, but I really look forward to his characterization in P4 side.

(P3 spoilers of course) How to Not Play Persona 3.

I'm playing the P3 side, so I have no idea what his PQ personality is like. Been looking for youtube vids, but everyone seems to be playing P3 side on there. Could you describe what his personality is like at all? Is he sarcastic or something, or is he just spaced out?

Maybe they're influenced by P3's gloomy atmosphere?
That and no friendship routes for the girls. That's a big plus for the sociopath argument.

EDIT:
True. It's more what people tend to perceive 'sociopath' to mean, like how people treat 'irony'.

What I meant was it was easier to see P3Hero as someone who didn't genuinely care about the people behind his S-links compared to Yu.

Er?

I don't get it. It's almost like we've gone back in time to Q1 2013 where people were thinking P5 was going to be on the Wii U or 3DS. Except the game was announced more than a year ago. In 2015, we'll get another moment of "P5 is apparently exclusive to PS3/PS4" here.

People just like saying exclusive.

Could easily just put out a press release saying "Japan is exclusive to not Xbox"

First we hear that Persona 5 is going to come out in North America after the Japanese launch, and now we hear that Persona 5 is going to be exclusive for the PS3/PS4. Some fresh news on the P5 front these days, for sure.

Well, the only thing new I saw on that thread is that Kingdom Hearts isn't a JRPG and Pokémon actually is. About the latter, I always assumed Pokémon was its own genre. lol

Super Mario Bros. is a Japanese role playing game because it's a Japanese game where you play the role of Mario.

Seriously, some people are so hellbent on making others believe what their definition of 'JRPG' is. It's one of the most annoying things.

That was so cute when people thought that because of the rumored list of games that appeared at E3.

Yeah, sure one that actually turned out to be true with PQ, but people thinking it was going to be P5? LOL

Honestly, I wonder why it's PS exclusive*. Sure, Persona games are historically exclusive to one platform (including the remakes, right?), but does a Persona game really need to be? Atlus has clearly demonstrated that they can/will do a multi-plat game (Catherine, Arena/Ultimax), and I'll argue that the hardcore "niche" Persona audience isn't quite so niche anymore.

Now, I'll admit the idea that the fanbase is large enough to support a mainline Persona game on multiple systems is subjective at best. The closest analog to consider is probably how Catherine performed. As far as I know, it didn't exactly light the charts on fire but it did well enough— and that was a new, oddball, Japanese IP! With the dearth of (J)RPGs on all consoles in the near future, I think going multi platform would have been killer for Persona 5. Maybe Certainly not in Japan, but I'm sure it would have a global impact.

What do you guys think?
Gimme dat red PS4 Persona bundle SONY PLS

*This entire line of thinking completely hinges on whether or not Sony is funding the PS4 version. That... complicates things.

If no one's going to defend P3's cutscenes, I'll do it. I like the disjointed surrealism they brought to the atmosphere and thought they added a lot to the game, particularly the intro one and the awakening of Orpheus.

I don't remember any of P4's cutscenes having any noteworthy effect on me.
