Phil Spencer on Halo 2 Anniversary

Unless they fix the cheating glitching and out of map nonsense I wouldn't set one foot in H2 MM again =/ Nostalgia is fine and all but I'm not ready to return to trolling times 1000 with people taking objectives way out of the map and countless other nonsense. I don't buy that "its part of the halo 2 experience" nonsense either.

I would rather have them take the H2 MP and remove all the crap from it that distorts the gameplay balance. I cant accept that the "perfect" halo mp is a game that revolves around glitches, the BR, power weapons & everything else is bad at the high level of play -.-
I really believe people think its the best because halo 2 was most's first experience with online gaming and the euphoria tied with halo just makes the nostalgia go up to ridiculous levels. I had so many nightmarish experiences with halo 2 and hope that if they do release H2A that its nonsense free.

Most of those things were byproducts of the physics and animation engines, if there was an HD remake then I would imagine it would be the old maps running in the new version of the engine, tweaked to feel like Halo 2.

BXR was not part of being a pro halo player, it was part of being a dickbag.

Played Halo 2 on XBC not too long ago and the game holds up rather well game play wise even on shitty XBC conditions. If you are suggesting that weapons need tuning I completely disagree. The balance is what worked well. There were times of frustration sure but I think the balance of Halo 2 is more interesting to the over balancing of games these days. Power weapons are powerful which gives incentive to hold those areas. I
think a lot of the frustration with the BR came from networking which should be mitigated with dedicated servers. The game was and is still great. Too bad games don't learn from Halo and chase the COD dream over and over.

That is how it is with a lot of game franchises

Oh, okay. Got it.
Yea some of that is true. But Harker doesn't deal in rumors and speculations ;)

What about the stuff that isn't true? Are you saying you know they isn't true, or just haven't heard anything about them? Don't have to say which ones, I guess.

Also, yes Downes mentioned Halo 2 Anniversary coming this year after ntkrnl spilled it, and then tried to recant and say he didn't know.

Phill, I hope you to understand that, at this point, H2A is no longer a surprise but something your consumers expect. Keep it in mind for your E3 agenda.

to see Halo 2 multiplayer maps redone with 1:1 scale and geometry with the old weapons, while having next generation graphics would actually make me have to buy an Xbox One. which is odd, because i haven't envisioned buying an Xbox One for any reason. but i would be willing to buy one for Halo 2 Anniversary. damn Microsoft, damn you...just when you think your out, they pull you right back in lol.

As long as you would still rather BXR than use an Off-Host Shotgun in H2A, then the fundamental game balance should be fine.

Otherwise, nerfed for Casuals.

Halo CE not having MP in the "truest sense" is a hilarious statement. Halo CE on Xbox still has the best MP of all Halo games.

I kind of agree with both of these posts; Halo 2 had balance issues and became a mess, and is so highly regarded because its online infrastructure and menu system was ahead of its time, and also because this was the first major online multiplayer game for consoles.

At the same time, imbalance can be fun, and if we're being honest every Halo game revolves around the BR or its equivalent and power weapons. The core gameplay was still insanely fun and addicting. Halo 2's main problems were the glitching, hacking, and the absolutely ridiculous aim assist, which made Sniper rifles much more powerful and easier to use than they should have been. Those things seem like they would definitely be fixed if re-released.

So yeah, it had things going for back then that it doesn't today, but I would also say it's still the most fast paced Halo with the best map design by a long shot. A revamped version that retains those traits could be great.

So hard to stomach the fact that the CE MP crowd pleaded, mewled and clamored for simply an online component of their favorite game since Halo 2's release and got Anniversary Edition 10 years later. A release that did nothing to satisfy the needs of that passionate and very vocal minority.

The Halo 2 crowd only starts to beg for an online update for their game once CE Anniversary releases and they get exactly what they want within 3 years.

I can't imagine that rejiggering the original MP to work online would have been that cost/development intensive considering XboxConnect. But who knows.

Microsoft really must hate the CE MP crowd. Was it halo2sucks.com that did it, Mic?

We were just young and emotional. We didn't mean any harm by it, we swear.

Having H2A with the classic MP would be interesting. It would test if the market is receptive to the old Halo gameplay mechanics without compromising the next big entry. The data of the game allow 343 to understand better the Halo players and introduce the proper twitchs to their formula.

Because recreating the feel of Xbox LAN parties with CE's totally existent LIVE code is so easy. Come on son.

Can't see it happening, hope he has a good E3 after what happened last year, I would of hit the drink if it was me.

MS really needs to get people like though. Spencer seems to be one of the only people there who cares about being likable and doing things that fans want. If not Spencer, they need somebody like that.

In the hierarchy, where does he stand? Like how high up is he?

He's the head of MS studios, so he probably reports to the CEO directly or Vice President.

I like him but I think he still needs to do a bit better in first party studio output.

I don't really say dude, and I don't really say fucking.. But I fucking love you dude.

I didn't play Halo MP until Halo 3. Why is Halo 2 MP considered the best?

It was considered the best by people who didn't play Halo CE for three years and on XBC during the period of 2001-2004.

I don't know who these people are that expect online play to be 1:1 with LAN and why we're using them as an excuse as to why adding online play to CE wouldn't be worthwhile, but I don't think these crazy people are a good excuse for completely omitting CE's multiplayer in CEA. What a disappointment that was. I'd be playing CEA even now if it actually had multiplayer, but I only had a couple days out of it replaying the campaign and shelved it forever after.

BXR was not part of being a pro halo player, it was part of being a dickbag.

Nope, sorry.

BXR is what good kids did to bad kids when they got caught in a shitty situation. It's called a skill gap. The knowledge that, no matter the circumstances, with enough skill there is always at least a chance to pull through it - THIS is the true greatness of H2, and sadly it is sorely lost on some people, including Bungie itself at the time.

And ironically, it's usually the same people who cry foul over precision button combos who love to select the armor lock ability, or start the game with active camo, or call down an RNG'd rocket launcher from the sky, or float around in the air with a jetpack destroying all semblance of map balance. And you think my button combos break the game??? I can't stop laughing.

Halo 2's multiplayer is broken beyond all belief.

The campaign is unfinished and Bungie deserves to remake it if a Halo 2 ever came out. The game practically destroyed the company, and it's a fucking insult to just bring the game they didn't want to release out again, exactly, with no chance to to get a do-over. "Hey, remember that game you fucked up? Here's a reminder of how you fucked up, again"

BXR isn't a skill gap. It's a bug that allows you to break a weapon's intended role and go unpunished for making the mistake of using the wrong weapon for the wrong situation.

I broke my Halo 2 disc in half in frustration back in the day due to how bad the cheating became.

And yeah, the post above me nails it.

I'll wait till this year's e3 before saying that. Last year's was pretty good as far as first and second party stuff goes. If this year is anything like that, I'd say he's been doing a pretty good job.

I loved the fuck up though :(

If this is real I'll probably be buying an Xbox One this fall.

Halo 2 multiplayer was so damn good. Honestly I think Halo CE single player and Halo 2 Multiplayer are the two best things of the Halo series that even Bungie themselves never bettered.

I hope they do dedicated servers or if they ever bring the original trilogy to PC let players host their own (hey a man can dream!)

wtf hyperbole everywhere lol. Halo 2 campaign was awesome, not CE good but still good. The multiplayer was good for me,never had issues.

Right. Because every time you get caught with the wrong weapon out it was YOUR mistake. Did you forget that Halo is an arena shooter with fast respawn timers?

Yeah but the BR's role is every situation. Duh.

A games starting weapon should be viable in all situations, yes.
