I'm leaning toward this model for region-free DVD viewing. If someone knows of a better option at a similar price($60), please let me know.

I've heard some of the cons are the noisy disc read system and some trouble with DTS soundtracks. Is this true? And how would you rate the quality through a component connection?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

If you want to do PAL stuff, the quality of the conversion to NTSC is horrendous. But otherwise, it's really a nice unit.

Damn.. I own the unit and I can't answer one of your questions. It is mighty good for what I use it for though.

Oh.. I've found that burning dvds in Data ISO 9660 only (not juliet) results in smoother playback of mpeg4 content. You only get 8 characters, but playback is what counts in my book. I just filled a DVD-R with 20+ eps of a tv show and all work flawlessly. The thing can read pretty much every writable media out there. It seems to do well even with poor quality (identified with Kprobe) burns.
