I ate at Little Lion saturday night. It was pretty decent pub food. After we went to this cool art exhibit at Penn's Landing. The exhibit was quite creepy. They had these wooden statues walking up the stairs at Penn's Landing and they were a little unsettling in the dark. They had all of these really neat fire based exhibits at the show. I'd have stayed longer but it was so damn cold!

Afterwards we got some drinks at Sassafras in old city, which is a GREAT bar. Then we bar hopped and went to Revolution House and were on the upstairs deck. We watched some NJ jabronis get into a fight outside of Continental until the police came and they all ran off scared. Drunk idiots. This is why I rarely drink in Old City. Although, Sassafras was so great I want to go back there more frequently.

Saturday was a great day though, with the Flyers getting to the playoffs. Shame about Ed Snyder though.

The Continental in Old City is shit compared to the one in Center City

Burn that butt to the ground

I haven't been to the Old City one actually. The manager from Continental is the person who flagged down the cops though, which was pretty cool. Even though he was like a 50 something year old man wearing hipster clothes which looked silly.

Hey everyone. Last year, I visited Philly and the thread gave me some great suggestions/advice. I'm visiting again with some friends at the end of the month. We will be staying around the north Philly area.

I need suggestions for dive bars. Cheap would be nice, as would craft beers on tap. We will be going to Citizens Bank Park. Will probably be grabbing some grub afterwards, so any cheap food places open late at night?

Also, has anyone between to the Simeone Automotive Museum? Or the Eastern State Penitentiary? I was leaning on going to ones of those in the morning.

Thanks for any help!

Spent the day yesterday wandering around the sakura cherry blossom festival with friends.
So many dogs for the dog show.
Someone was walking around with 4 pugs in tutus.
Was a good time overall.

North Philly area is a big area. Do you mean like the far north, or just north of Center City? Haven't been to the Simeone Automotive Museum. Eastern State Penitentiary is really cool though. Lots of lunch spots and bars in that area too.

Anyone know of the Reed St / Citizen's Bank area? How is it?

Reed St runs through South Philly. The main neighborhoods it runs through are Point Breeze, Passyunk Square, and Pennsport. Passyunk Square is probably the most interesting of those. Great food and bar scene. When in south Philly the thing to remember is that east of Broad Street is typically nicer and safer than west of Broad Street.

I went yesterday for the first time. Somehow never got around to it. I've been to Shofuso plenty of times, just never during the festival. It was great weather, and my dog had a blast. It was a nice family friendly event. Sometimes I'm shocked at how popular anime culture and whatnot is. I actually sort of didn't expect it to be so prevalent, but I don't know why I thought that.

I'm kinda over Sakura Sunday since I visit Japan now /elitist

Well, all of the blossoms were killed in that cold snap last week so there really wasn't much in terms of cherry blossoms to look at, that's for sure.

I will be staying not to far from La Salle University.

Any bar you would really recommend around the ESP?

Belgian Cafe, London, Bar Hygge, and Alla Spina are probably the best in that neighborhood. Belgian Cafe has one of the largest beer selections in the city. London has a decent selection of drinks and is very close to ESP. Bar Hygge is a new brew pub a couple of blocks from ESP, which has really great in house brews and a good cocktail program. Alla Spina is a great bar with amazing food and a great beer and wine selection.

I would stay away from Jack's Firehouse and Urban Saloon as the worst spots right near ESP.

Heh I like jacks and urban :(

I don't have a problem with Urban Saloon it's just boring and unremarkable. Macro brews and bros.

Jack's is just awful. Poor food, horrible service, and is dirty as shit. It's been shut down for health violations a bunch of times. It's a great building, but anyone with half a brain could run a better operation in that location.

Belgian Cafe sounds right up our alley. Everyone in the group are beer drinkers and aren't afraid of trying new things.

Thank you for the tips!

Yeah the festival's got a large mix of ordinary Japanese people with no interest in anime/manga, otaku's and some furries mixed in.
I've got a friend involved in the festival and from what he's told me one of the hardest things about it is managing a delicate balancing act between the two groups since the festival can't survive without both.
There's a reason most the otaku section is hidden behind the building away from the rest, among others I was told one year all that stuff was where the food area is now and the event where anyone could sign up and sign anime karaoke songs did not mesh well with the rest of the attendees especially when quite a few participants did not know how to sing.

"Three arrested as Philadelphia police seize another 60 dirtbikes and ATVs. Citywide crackdown on illegal vehicles comes in advance of summer months"

As someone who lives on the corner of a very loud and busy intersection, thank god.
Speak of the devil, yesterday walking back to the car after the festival about 25 or so atvs and dirtbikes blazed through a intersection we walked through half a minute ago nearly causing several accidents among the cars who had to swerve to avoid collisions.
I hope the 3 arrested was from among those idiots that we saw yesterday.

It's at least a year and a half too early to call the trade a bad one. Incredibly risky? Yes. But where else were we going to get a potential franchise QB? Get incredibly lucky with a late-rounder like Brady or Wilson (yes, I know we passed on Russell)? No way we are going to be at 8 again anytime soon with the talent of our defense this year alone. Plus, tons of top tier QBs are close to retiring. There is going to be a bloodbath amongst teams Steelers, Patriots and Cardinals in the next couple drafts. The Eagles saw a chance on a guy they really liked and took it. I don't have a problem with the logic behind the trade.

Saw this today:

a study by commercial real estate brokerage JLL found that the city’s Millennial population jumped by 41 percent since 2006, and the percentage of Millennials in the city’s population rose faster than in any other of the nation’s 10 largest cities during that same time period. And at 26.5 percent, they represent a larger share of the population than in all but two of those cities (San Diego and Chicago)

In 10 years we gained a 40% increase in millennial population. If that trend holds in any appreciable way I wouldn't be surprised if Philadelphia became the #1 millennial city in the near future.

I would imagine it's the comparatively affordable apartments and houses. It's why I stayed and didn't go back to Boston.

So when did the South Philly Walmart stop being 24hours? I was on my way there and they close in a few mins. I shouldn't have to drive to KOP OR Deptford to get underpriced toiletries at 1 am. We need more 24 hour support other than Rite Aid and Wawa.

I think the walgreens at city Hall is 24 hour too. You're right though.

Still I have fond memories of drunkenly raiding Rite Aid for Magic the Gathering cards during a late night magic night at my house.

Any of you know what's happening on 202 heading north towards King of Prussia?
On one overpass there was a crane with flashing blue lights with a massive US flag hoisted up and several other overpasses had fire trucks with their lights on and with them a bunch of people holding signs pointed at the northbound side.

One of the candidates visiting maybe?

I work in Plymouth Meeting and saw a limo with a police escort the other day, hadn't seen that before

I never knew it was 24hrs, I always thought it closed at 12.

The CVS on 20th and Oregon is 24hrs though.

That might be it.
I guess Trump and Clinton are in the Philly area today and tomorrow.

Man, next week is going to rock so hard. The Craft Brewers Conference and the World Beer Cup are in Philadelphia. I am going to drink so much I won't want beer for a month afterward...

Which is good because Philly Beer Week starts the first week of June!

Center City Sips returns in June too. Hopefully the construction at Marathon is finished by then. That's my go-to spot.

I've only done sips a few times. I'd probably do it more if I worked in center city. I just get a kick out of the crowds at those things. Seems so full of desperate single people.

It is. Dudes desperate to get laid. Chicks desperate to get laid/fawned over.

True enlightenment is just kicking back, getting lit and watching the interactions.

That and ogling the hot scantily dressed single women. I bet industry people hate sips so much.

I wonder if industry people hate the sips crowds more, or the U Penn students more.
