Physical Version of Shenmue 3 PS4 Now on the Kickstarter

I remember when PC boxes were the best boxes, and then came the boring cheap plastic DVD cases.

You mean boxes like these?

It's true, they were so awesome, always packed with content. The only problem was trying to keep the boxes pristine, especially the corners. The digital age actually given us less content.

Who ever wrote this in the Kotaku comment nailed it. That idiot really does need to go because the article was THAT stupid:

"Phil, this is coming from a game dev that you and a number of your readers will know. I don’t care or mean to offend you personally, but I’m a little stunned Kotaku published your article. And to clarify something immediately, I’m not a huge fan of Shenmue. But for you to begin an article with “I don’t particularly care...I don’t fund other people’s creative endeavors” is a little perplexing considering you’re writing for a publication that stays afloat by writing about said endeavors.

We already live in a time in which artists are expected, more and more, to give the best of themselves for free. For someone in your position to basically say “creative endeavor (art) is literally worthless” is bizarre. We don’t need entitled critics whining into their microphones that they’re better than the games they write about.

Next time you get a cold handshake (and if I don’t laugh at your shitty jokes) take a moment to wonder who read you’re revealing little article.

It’s a fantasy, but I’d love to see Kotaku let you go."
To be clear, Phil is a freelancer we used as a guest editor while everyone was off for the holiday, not part of Kotaku's staff.

Don't use him. Freelancer or not, all media sites got rules and the golden one is not to tarnish the publication's credibility with bs. Once an article like that goes on your site, which it did, it will affect your credibility, which it has. You need to be more careful with who you pick to represent your company whether they are a freelancer, full timer, or whatever the contracted editor is or will be.

Crossing fingers that this to be a wake up call of some sort for kotaku thougb it's hard to find optimism.

Co-signed what Trojan X said. I have limited time to read gaming sites for news and reviews. Clickbait trash like this will get you nowhere in the long run. I am positive you are aware of this fact, though, so I hope steps are taken to rectify this.

I still have something against GameSpot for that stupid 6.8 review from everyone's favorite jackass.

Big boxes with huge and beautiful manuals inside.

Anyone here translate the website for Awesome Japan yet? It makes me laugh, considering how they've handled the campaign thus far.
Awesome Japan webpage said:

In short:
"What we want to achieve, two things:

One- To spread wonderful Japanese content abroad, in order to reinvigorate the Japanese economy and strengthen Japan's international presence.

Two-
To the children who will build our future, we want them to look at us who work at AWESOME JAPAN and have them think:

"If I could become an adult like that, it might be worth growing up"

"Working really hard might not be so bad after all"

And so on.

That Phil guy did get mobbed and received some unwarranted insults on Twitter, which I can empathize with. If someone does a poor job, criticize the job done, not the person who did it, try to point out where you think they went wrong. Sometimes you get emotional, but engaging with angry hostility is rarely the most constructive approach. All that accomplished here was make his writer pals think Shenmue fans are a bunch of shitheads and add to the negativity and cynicism his article led with.

Twitter mob behavior in general is just dumb and shitty. I wish people would look at other people's timelines before deciding whether their response is really necessary. You put @twittername in the search box.

And posting an ill-conceived article isn't necessarily a crime, people make mistakes, if they take the opportunity to learn from them then, in general, that's forgivable.
But, instead, his response to the heated criticism has just fucking pissed me off. Like, when staff of the site you're temping for is basically making the same argument as the people you're mocking and insulting alongside your writer pals, maybe reflect on the critical backlash and act like a professional instead of like a fucking asshole? I don't know the guy on a personal level, but that's his public perception.

At this juncture, there's clearly no point in attempting to communicate with him at all, and I hope people won't. Just block and actively avoid him.
Instead of expressing my wish for him to stop appearing at sites I visit, I hope he ends up landing a job at Polygon. That would be perfect.

Are you well versed in Japanese? Could you translate a message for me?

i really hope people aren't going to be backing the 60 dollar game and just selling it on ebay
Although it would be a shame, at least people trying to do that are giving to the KS that doesn't seem to have a cap as far as the physical copies go. Now, if they were limited, then it would be shitty.

Gotta hold the people writing articles to stroke their egos to high standards.

Freelancer or not, I'd be ashamed if I was an employee and saw some jackass clown enticing fans like he did.

Yup. As mentioned numerous times on this forum, I hope the person from Kotaku realise that there is a slew of bad articles that keeps getting generated from his site. I wouldn't be surprised if they were both from freelance and full time employees. One of the people in that ill-article comments section described this further. I hope that article triggered a Kotaku shake-down.

Hope the physical version comes with a real manual of some kind.

Love my manuals for Shenmue I and II. Definitely helped with understanding the unique control scheme and style of the games.

I really hope SEGA will bring out a remaster seeing how successful this KS has been.

I think it's inevitable. SEGA can't be that stupid to not take advantage of this moment. Regardless, once the kick-starter finishes the Shenmue community needs to come together and focus on flooding SEGA with requests for them.

Yes.

In the meantime though, the best thing we can do to assure that is to make the Kickstarter for Shenmue III as huge of a success as possible. That's the best possible indicator for SEGA of the true level of fan interest and enthusiasm.

Regardless of circumstance, as a published article on Kotaku, it still shapes how people view Kotaku.

I'd be more concerned about how his ranting on Twitter about the reaction to that article than anything else - shows a complete inability to take criticism or negative feedback and use it in a positive way. Is that really someone you want writing for you?

We can all sit here and say over and over that Sega are mad to not release a HD Collection given how successful the Kickstarter is, that it's money on the table, that so many people out there want to play these games and are unable to do so, so on and so forth. But if there are legal issues prohibiting them from doing so without the risk of being sued by whoever owns these ancient licenses that feature in the game, then the prospect of a collection being released is an unfortunate impossibility. I don't know how these things work, maybe with an adept legal force and enough money thrown at the problem they can make it happen, but if not then we just have to accept that these remasters, which are supposedly done and primed to go, are just going to languish in a vault somewhere until the end of days. Given all the pressure that Sony has been under the past couple of years by fans to make the future of Shenmue become a reality in some form or another, if they're not able to go to Sega and convince them somehow to release Shenmue 1+2, and opted to just dive straight into Shenmue 3 instead, then it's not looking like a HD Collection is ever going to become a reality.

If they do a Shenmue 1+2 HD remaster, they should announce it before this kickstarter ends, and maybe bundle it with some of the tiers. The kickstarter would explode.

Harsh, unfortunate reality... :(

It there are legal issues (I really wish we could get this confirmed) SEGA still needs to do everything they can to try and make it possible. And if it's absolutely impossible they need to make a statement and not just remain silent like dumb-dumbs.

It's a shame for I really do love manuals and other additional contents we use to received in box packages. These days, publishers cut cost on the manuals by not providing it and yet the cost of the game is still sky high. Capitalization it seems.

Yeah, I miss the days of flicking through a good game manual.
And also smelling it.

Hopefully it's more of a case they are keeping quiet as work is being done behind the scenes to resolve it. But who knows at this point.

They've expressed interest in opening up a paypal but at this point it seems like it will be a thing for after the Kickstarter has ended. They get a larger portion of the money from Kickstarter than they do with paypal so they may not want the paypal funding eating potential money from the Kickstarter campaign.

As for your second question, they haven't said either way but I've used services like backer kit for other campaigns in the past to upgrade my pledge. As long as they have a system in place which allows them to keep track of backers well it should be within the realms of possibility.

Well we are closing in on final three days of the Kickstarter campaign.

So those sitting on the fence or wanted to guarantee themselves of a physical copy better pledge soon. Still more than 24,000 sitting on the $29 level that hopefully may be tempted to upgrade to a physical copy before Friday.

They need to add PC + PS4 tier. I can't emphasize this enough. I've send them a message a while ago and they haven't responded yet. I can see 25% folks increasing their pledge if that happens.

Agreed, I sent Cedric another tweet about this. Hopefully they can add this in next day or two to coincide with the final push.

Oh ok, because for now I can only do the $60 physical PS4 and I don't get paid in time for the deadline (boring budgeting talk blah blah) as I really want to go for $100 for the additional trial PC and my name in the credits.

How do I ask this later upgrade question to these guys? ;_;
