Place your bets: Age of Ultron vs The Force Awakens

I am still baffled how anyone in their right mind ever thought Marvel/Avengers was even in the same ballpark as Star Wars. Now, let alone a year ago.

It's going to be nuts to watch this thing sail past Avatar. Should be ahead of Avatar domestically by early Jan.

Yeah lots of crazies in this thread

It's just a placeholder for Avatar 2, which will break every record upon release
/s but with some truth probably
Domestically? All but impossible. Seeing how TFA is going to not only best Avatar but crush it. Avatar 2 has no chance. TFA is going to pass 900 mil while Avatar finished at 750.

Holy cow!

This makes me happy. I'm going to go see Star Wars again on Monday while my car is being worked on.

Its weird watching people fight over this when they are both from the same company lol. They aren't competing against one another. It will be interesting to see Infinity Wars totals as it's the culmination of everything but it still won't match 8 or 9 unless 8 is horrendous

Lol

So nice to look back at this thread. I first assumed AoU would win, because the Marvel hype seemed endless and there were no guarantees Star Wars would be good. But then AoU disappointed a bit and Star Wars had one of the smoothest hype machines ever seen, and as it turns out, the film is actually good.

I'm super happy for Star Wars. Can't wait for the next episodes now!

Corporate executives win! Flawless victory.

Why is it so hard to believe? before TFA the worldwide box office looked like this.

I agree. I can't really fault anybody for thinking Ultron could top Star Wars. That said, there are some people that took it too far in this thread, even going so far as to laugh or call the Star Wars people crazy, and threw around words like 0% chance. They were so sure, they stated their opinions as the absolute fact. No problem laughing at those folks. If you're going to commit to something, eat your humble pie if it falls through. It's good for you!

The mere fact Star Wars literally dominated Marvel in toy sales year after year even with zero movies made it pretty clear which was bigger of the two. There wasn't any modern era Star Wars films to compare box-office but by literally every other franchise metric Star Wars was dominant. It was a forgone conclusion it would easily surpass what an Avenger film could do.

Star Wars is THE franchise that towers above all others, you didn't need TFA to know that. The evidence has always been there.

Even you didn't predict it would be THIS successful though going by your posts in this thread. This movie has really been something else not many people saw coming.

I never thought it would top Avatar, no. That still blows my mind that that is actually happening.

But I had no doubt it would top Avengers.

Man lots of faith in Ultron.
The better movies prevailed.
J World and TFA were so much better than A:U.
If there was real justice in the world Mad Max would have taken it all.

Truth. I still remember seeing people in the OT hoping the worldwide gross would be enough for it to break even to have an argument for a sequel.

I still don't know if there's going to be a sequel. Damn it.

People are so tired of superhero movies AoU is the 6th highest grossing film of all time worldwide and the 3rd best selling Blu-Ray of the year.

I agree that superhero movies have probably peaked but that's one hell of a peak.

Ehh...still within my prediction. We'll see if domestic managed to hit 1B then we'll celebrate.

Foreign gross pretty standard for high profile release, and China remains to be seen considering this isn't the Star Wars that have Donnie Yen in it.

Just imagine if Disney made a Disney's Princess movie though. :( No one would stand a chance.

Jurassic World was as bad as Age of Ultron. But I agree 100% about Mad Max. In fact, though TFA was great, Fury Road's insane intensity kind of spoiled the last part of Star Wars for me. It was so much better of an action movie that it made TFA seem pale.

This thread is funny to me because both of the sales are going to the same piggy bank anyway.

Disney is laughing all the way to the bank.

Mad Max was boring.

AoU, and quite easily.

Star Wars is immensely popular, but it isn't guaranteed box office gold around the world. In fact, they actually don't perform that well, only a single Star Wars ever crossed a billion worldwide or 400 mill domestic and that was Episode 1, for obvious reasons, the hype was un-real.

If you look at the top of the box office of all time, 30% is domestic, 70% worldwide. For almost all the Star Wars movies, it is much closer to being close to 50-50.

Avengers has worldwide mass appeal, Star Wars doesn't, if you look at box office numbers.

Ehh, Mad Max was a Rated R reboot of a dormant action franchise coming out at a weird time. It was never going to go Hamster Huey and the Gooey Kablooie.
