Rouge One

Rouge One is going to have motherfucking Darth Vader in it. It is going to do huge numbers. Batman v Superman is Batman v Superman, that will of course do huge numbers. Like better than Avengers numbers. I still am in wait and see mode for Civil War. They haven't really started their marketing push at all. I am assuming we will get one more trailer this month, and they are absolutely leaving money on the table if it does not have at least one good scene tease of Spider-Man. Either way, I'd be willing to bet all three enter the top 10 for WW gross.

Most people think Rogue One will gross the most?

Captain America: The Winter Soldier: $714.4m

Man of Steel: $668.0m

Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens: $2,048.2m

I don't expect Rogue One to do TFA numbers, and I think Civil War will do better than Winter Soldier, and BvS better than MoS. But but that's a $1.3b - $1.4b gap to close between the last installments in the respective franchises. That's massive.

This is the 2016 version of Malyse's Age of Ultron vs The Force Awakens thread. I'm going to ask generally the same questions from the last thread with one added question.

Which film will be the highest grossing at the box office?

Which film will receive the highest critical acclaim?

If they were all released on the same day, which would you go see first?

Which film will be the best received by GAF?

Rogue One
Rogue One
Rogue One
Rogue One

Rogue One will be much more niche. I'll say Bats VS Superman as those films have done well in recent years and it's a bit more eye catching.

Civil War? It'll do well but not as well.

It's really hard. I'm personally betting that Civil War will come out the big winner but Marvel fatigue is setting in while DC is coming in as the fresh faced new kid on the block. I think Rogue One will be the lowest grosser partly because it's playing second fiddle to the main trilogy and isn't going to receive the marketing push TFA had. It depends on how well the movie is received in the trailers.

As for critical reception if Civil War really is more Winter Soldier than it's going to be the best out of the three and the one I want to see right now. Batman v Superman will probably be more loved on Gaf because Gaf don't like Mahvel. Again I gotta see footage of Rogue One but because this isn't Episode VIII and I'm always wary of Gareth Edwards this is the one I'm least certain about.
So my guess (WW):
Civil War: 1.2 billion (most acclaimed)
Batman v Superman: 1 billion (most loved on GAF)
Rogue One: 800 million (just there)

Probably low balling it. Will edit when I'm wrong.

Not sure which part of GAF you've been browsing but in general people dont like batman vs superman here.

Anyway, personally i'm way excited for batman vs superman. I'm completely tired of the marvel super hero movie formula and cant wait to get into the DCU.

Batman v Superman to earn the most at the box office.

I think Civil War will be the best well-received one.

I would see Batman v Superman first.

Civil War likely given there's more of a Marvel liking here than DC.

Biggest BO will be Batman vs Superman, and best reviewed will be civil war, I would go to civil war first, most loved by gaf will be civil war.

I didn't include rogue one simply because we haven't even seen a trailer, it may have a great cast but that doesn't exactly translate into a great movie.

I don't know. BvS and CW are pretty big event movies, bringing us clashes of big names that we know and love. I think we can expect both to do a billion easy. Rogue One isn't an event movie, features a mostly unknown cast, is a spinoff most people at this time don't even know about, and isn't a big hyped return like Ep. VII. I'd be surprised if it did half of TFA's numbers, and even that would put it below expectations for the other two.

In order of asked,

Civil War
Rogue One
Batman v Superman
Civil War

Also believe Suicide Squad and that Harry Potter spin-off could stand next to these three. Independence Day 2 could catch the '90s nostalgia and surprise.

Likely completely wrong except for the 3rd one.

It's Star Wars, which by definition sort of makes it an event movie, and it's going to own the Christmas holiday and January as TFA did. Having that window will give it a pretty heavy leg up. It's also a direct prequel to the original film, and among other things is rumored to
feature Darth Vader prominently
. I think the nostalgia play with it will be at least as heavy as with TFA.

TFA rejuvenated the franchise, and while I'm sure it won't do TFA's numbers, it's not going to drop by half, particularly not with the expected improved performance in China and other international markets vs. TFA.

Ah, I missed Civil War.

hmm

hmm...

Rogue One hype will be boosted by TFA being good, Civil War hype will probably even out (Antman was good, but Ultron was cheeks), BvS will be below both.

Obviously the SW movie is going to perform best at the box office.

With yearly releases, Star Wars movies won't really be events anymore going forward. Moreover, within the franchise itself the spinoffs by definition aren't the "events", the numbered episodes are. Your point about the nostalgia, that character, and the international performance are well taken, but I really think the movie being a spinoff will affect its numbers big time. It's a shot in the dark without any footage or precedent to base this on, so it'll be interesting to see how it pans out. Hopefully I remember to check back to this post in about a year.

It´s a Spin-Off, but still Star Wars. It´s not gonna do 2 billion, but it´s probably going to do 150-200 million more than BvS.

Rogue One: 1.4 billion WW
BvS: 1.2 billion WW
Civil War: 950 WW

Highest Grossing?

Would be very surprised if its not Civil War. I also expect it will make over a billion. Only this weekend my 10 year old nephew was excitedly telling me how he cant wait to see Civil War because "it's really just the next Avengers movie because everyone from the Avengers movies is in it". I suspect that this is a fairly common perception amongst kids and more casual cinema goers which will drive up attendance far higher than Winter Soldier did.

Critical Acclaim?

It will probably be close, but i think Rogue One has the potential to edge out Civil War on this if they pull it off right, especially with the nostalgia factor.

Which will i see first?

All 3 coming out the same day actually wouldnt change my plans from how i plan to see these movies in reality. I will be making the trip to the nearest IMAX which is in a different city for Civil War, i will see Rogue One in the cinema locally a couple of weeks after release when the rush dies down and BvS i will wait for the Blu-Ray.

I guess Disney will ramp up the Rogue One marketing once the TFA blu ray is out, and I can see it grossing the most of those three. Civil War wil come in as a close second, but they could swap places.

I will eat crow on this, but I believe BvS will underperform in the long run. Maybe it is a completely irrational feeling, because I personally don't feel anything for the movie, and didn't like much of what was shown so far. It is not going to flop, but it won't be a smash hit either I guess. Critically it will probably be panned too

if they came out the same day I would see Rogue One first, as a big SW fan. Civil War would be the day after. BvS? Not sure if I'm going anyway :P

Rogue One is a bit of an unknown, as it's the first SW spin off. It might be that people are like 'it's not Episode 8!?', and might not care. Depends on how they market it. It will still make a billion easily though.

The question is if Civil War will be closer to AoU or TWS, I suspect the Cap V Iron Man marketing will push it into AoU territory, maybe even slightly higher if it's really good (which I think it will be). I reckon BvS will be fun but very divisive, it will get way more hate than the other two, either way it will be close to a billion.

Highest BO: Civil War (wouldn't rule out R1 though)
Highest Critical Acclaim: Rogue One
Best Received on GAF: Rogue One
Which one I would see first: Rogue One

My opinion here is heavily biased as I am an unashamed SW super-fanboy.

Which film will be the highest grossing at the box office?

Rogue One. Star Wars fans will make sure of that by watching it ten times each.

Which film will receive the highest critical acclaim?

Civil War. The Russo Brothers know their shit.

If they were all released on the same day, which would you go see first?

Civil War by a mile. I don't like Star Wars and I hated Man of Steel so I'll wait for reviews before seeing BvS.

Which film will be the best received by GAF?

Civil War, then Rogue One, then BvS.

Well actually...there was Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which definitely didn't ride the Star Wars name to big success based on its BO take and critical ratings.

I'm sure Rogue One will do quite well thanks to built up goodwill from TFA, but I wouldn't be surprised if Civil War beats it in BO take, nor would I be surprised if both Civil War and BvS beat it critically, thanks to Edwards special talent of making his actors look more woodenly directed than if Lucas himself were helming the movie.

Well actually...there was Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which definitely didn't ride the Star Wars name to big success based on its BO take and critical ratings.

I don't think that's a fair comparison. The Clone Wars was never supposed to be a movie, they just edited together a few episodes of the show and released it without much hype or marketing at a time when SW had been off screens for 3 years. It didn't help that, as an animated film, it released not long after Wall-E.

Right now Rogue One could be Fantastic 4 bad and still make 600m.

Highest grossing: Very close between Civil War and BvS. I'll go Civil War domestically and BvS worldwide. I don't really see Rogue One hitting like a normal Star Wars flick does. We'll see though, all will perform fantastic.

Critical Acclaim: I'll go with Civil War here. I think it's an established, low risk property. Snyder is just a polarizing director (honestly he's not very good) and that alone will divide critics. Rogue One will be well received. BvS will be in the 70s, Rogue in the low 80's, and Civil War in the high 80s.

Which would I see first: Kind of irrelevant. All will be first weekend watches. I'm most interested in BvS due to it being a new combination for a new universe being established. Not to mention the emotions in that gaf thread. Civil War is a known commodity I think I'll know what I'm getting. Seeing Spidey and Panther will be fun. Also fascinated to see how Rogue One comes together. I have a ton of questions about the Star Wars extended universe and how they'll tackle it.

Best received on gaf: Another question that's tough to answer. If I had to guess based on the sentiment around the movies/universes? Rogue > Civil War > BvS.
