Planetside 2 and DC Universe Online coming to PS4

ps2 wont be a launch game. going by the tweets, they are porting the engine to ps4 atm...

plus they update ps2 on pc a lot and they will be showing everquest 2 in summer

Some people seem to be implying that this will be ready for launch, but that hasn't been confirmed has it? Surely they need to have a PS4 version beta test etc? I'm just so used to console MMOs taking forever to come out or not coming out at all... though I think the 360 version of FF XI was a launch title so it isn't unheard of (or was that a beta too?)
Press release states later this year which sounds like launch window to me.
DC Universe Online and PlanetSide 2 will be available for PS4 as free-to-play titles with optional in-game purchases via digital download later this year.

PlanetSide 2 is pretty damn fun. I'm not big on the idea of playing it with a controller, but still a nice addition to the PS4 -- a completely fair F2P game, too.

This has probably been asked already, but what exactly is keeping MS/Xbone from getting these F2P games?

I'm sure some of them will make their way to Xbone later, but my guess would be that MS just has obstructive policies. If they put a F2P game on the One, they want it to be *the* F2P game and feature it prominently in a way that promotes the Xbox brand. I'd assume that (timed?) exclusivity and a general attitude that runs contrary to Sony's "do as thou wilt" approach are also involved.

Never played Planetside 2, but it looks really interesting. Seems like MAG mixed with a little Battlefield. Can't wait to play it.

PS2 makes even MAG look tiny, in terms of both player counts and map sizes.

this basically confirms online play is STAYING free, right?

The f2p model is essential to PS2. The game is in constant development (it is honestly a whole other game than when it released 6 months ago, and then it was completely different from when the beta started in August of last year, and it will be pretty much reinvented in terms of overarching gameplay by November or so), they could not continue that without a constant revenue stream. Barriers to entry would only reduce their potential population

um, no.

Planetside 2 and DC Universe Online are developed by SOE (Sony Online Entertainment).

Good F2P games on consoles is simply fantastic news in-general. I really hope this is a trend that continues through the gen, because it really increases the value of a game console in my eyes. As a PC gamer, I truly have been amazed with the quality of some F2P titles available this past gen.

I would not mind a Mechwarrior Online Port on Xbone or PS4, then maybe I could get some decent gamepadad support on PC :)

Oh, I didn't mean these specific games, I meant F2P in general and the other confirmed F2P games: Warframe, Warthunder, and Blacklight Retribution.

oh okay.

It would still be hella weird though if they're marketed as F2P on X1 seeing as how you have to pay for Live >_>

PS2 and War Thunder at launch is good enough for me to keep me occupied after I play the hell out of my launch titles. I haven't played PS2 since my SSD died though so I'm sure it's going to be a great experience jumping back in to see what changed on PC. Bringing a bigger community to PS2 is always good news.

Truly free online plus F2P titles makes the perceived value of the PS4 at launch quite high. I'm sure they'll try to entice more people to get PS+ (although it's worth it anyway) and maybe keep some of the streaming options to PS+ only if they really need to but I don't see them forcing anything on people if they truly learned lessons over the past generation. Basically, by keeping the added costs down after the console purchase plus giving them solid entertainment for free to keep them occupied will look really good to some owners who can't afford every game. I bet they wish they did that last generation to make people feel somewhat better about the price although it was still ridiculous in comparison.

MS just has a different approach than Sony when it comes to F2P games. It's rumored MS has signed exclusivity deals for LoL and Hawken so it looks like they're only interested in hand picking exclusive games they think will do really well in their platform.

Sony on the other hand is going out to developers and telling them "hey, what do you think of bringing it over to PlayStation 4?" without attaching any strings. AFAIK Blacklight, Warthunder, and Warframe are being self published. None of those developers had to sign exclusivity deals or seek a publisher out to get the game published on the console. BR is also using Sony PubFund (advance against royalties) to fund the development of the port. The other 3 announced F2P games are first party.

oh man I hope Hawken comes to PS4 as well, it looks awesome.

It's going to be interesting to see where F2P on consoles goes in the future. A lot of the models have been bad in the past, but we've gotten some good F2P models recently and like you said, it seems each company has a different strategy which has me intrigued as to which one works out the best. One going after the big active F2P games (although I'm sure they'll go after others over time that we just don't know about yet) and then Sony basically saying, "Our console is open so come take it if you bastards want it! They seem to have been really good with Gaijin and War Thunder and making sure all their questions are answered."

I just wish more people played Historical or Full Real Battles on War Thunder and I doubt many console gamers will, but at least it should add SOME brave souls to the queue.

Has it been confirmed Planetside 2, Blacklight: Retribution, and Wolfenstein are launch games?

All are listed as 2013 titles except Blacklight. I guess whether they make the actual launch day remains to be seen.

This gif killed me :0 Haha

Planetside 2 looked very interesting from watching vids of the PC version. Will definitely give it a shot on PS4. Hope it runs well.

PS2 feels huge... AAA F2P games on consoles just seems like an untapped market that could explode and make someone a lot of money.

I cant believe all this good news regarding the ps4.

MY PC is incapable of playing ps2..so im looking forward to this..and its FREE!
