Played 360 today...

If it will make some of you feel better I'll tell you all what I did really like:

* the console design and controller are beautiful and very sleek
* The highrezness of it all was pretty sweet. I loved that it was virtually like a PC in terms of clarity and sharpness. Something I will definately come to appreciate when I am able to get a HDTV.
* The user interface in the console itself is sweet. Xbox live is gonna really be something special this time around. I love how simple everything is to navigate. I love how everything is seperated into different sections and seems seamless.

I think what I need are some tried and true killer apps. For me Gears of War would have been the game that sucked me in. Oblivion may have done the same. Neither will make launch.

What are you bitching about? Next gen doesn't start until next year, we all know that don't we?

Edit:
I played the Xbox 360 at E3 and I was dissappointed, none of the games blew me away, they looked like good PC games. However, I also realize these are first gen games that are mostly rush jobs in order to meet the launch window. Next year, we will start to see second generation xbox 360 games and the PS3 will come out with ports of these 2nd gen games, then people will be wowed.

Make a thread about it and see what happens. You'll have douches like bitwise wanting to fight you. lol. Anyway, I agree exactly with what your saying, except I was expecting to be blown away by the games based on the overly excited impressions I read everywhere.

It's just a case of being overhyped I suppose, and who can blame me? As soon as anyone badmouths the 360 mecca around here it seems, the rabid defenders of the crown come in to swiftly defend it glory and make sure everyone knows it's the best thing since the invention of the wheel. heh.

I am currently playing Burnout Revenge and the game is actually pretty impressive. Now IF the game was for the 360 I would be saying that it looks like crap. That's how the game is played. But when some company is hyping you and trying to sell you the next-gen cake...well, you should have that right at least.
Regarding what you claim Lyte...dunno. When I saw RRV I was pretty hyped. There were so many things on screen (the city felt so real) that I was actually impressed. And the same happened to me before with Soul Calibur.
Now the feeling is much less pronounced...even with like 99 Knights, MGS4 or PGR3 to say some games. Even though they are the ones I find most impressive.

i think u are no impressed more cause the games look better but are too similar (on game play, camera angles) to the ones of this current gen,we need more new concepts not only better gfx or higher res, also a big problems lies with animation, animation its a big part of package of realism,if we got near photorealistic characters but they move like psx games the suspension of belief is shattered look at the nba video in game

also dont worry abour ur english, mine´s is a lot worse :lol :lol

Played CoD2.

Much prettier guns sticking through walls. Much better animations on the characters standing in open air with one foot on a ledge.

Same shit, different gen.

For casuals, I can see compelling arguements for waiting to buy. For hardcore gamers, I see no excuse not to buy.

The $300/$400 price points are perfectly valid reasons not to buy. There are still a fuckton of cheap, great titles from this gen I need to play, more than enough to keep me occupied and satisfied until a future price drop.

That's funny, it starts in less than a month for me and others than can afford more than one system.

...and I came away pretty disappointed overall. The system looked nice. The controllers were perfect..The games just didn't do it at all for me. I felt like they we're Xbox games in hi rez. The sharpness in the image quality was nice and all, but I was expecting to be a little more blown away by what they are offering. I kinda got a weird "it's the same old shit" vibe. Like its this generation with a candy coating, ya know? I can't be the only one who feels this way, can I? =_(

All in all I'm starting to feel like updating the graphics just isn't gonna do it anymore.

I felt the same way with my first impressions, with the exceptions that- a) I was hoping the console would be a little taller/thinner, and b)I didn't feel like the controller was anything special.

I may change my tune, but at this point I'll wait until big price drop. Like down to $199

I think this really illistrates MS' biggest miscalculation.

The Xbox 360 is a very good system. I don't think anyone would say the design is ugly; to the contrary, it's the best looking system imo. Western and Japanese developers love the system, and plan on supporting it heavily; many great games have been announced. But the problem is, none of these great games are going to be launch titles. PD0 looks good, but it won't have anywhere near the impact that Halo did. The system doesn't have one sure fire amazing AAA game to hook gamers.

By the time the great looking Xbox 360 games like Gears of War come out, the PS3 will be on the horizon. MS launched early to get a head start in the next gen market, but I also believe they weren't very sure the 360 could go toe to toe with the PS3. So, instead of launching the system when they had amazing software to back up their amazing hardware, MS has chosen to rush things. This is a gamble, and I really don't think it'll work if the PS3 does come out Spring 2006. Everynow knows how powerful Sony's marketing/hype blitz can be. If MGS4 was just a preview, it's clear Sony has some more tricks up their sleeve; I'm willing to bet we'll see some before the 360's launch.

MS' behavior here is very similar to Nintendo's US launch of the DS. The DS had a terrible launch, and it was clear Nintendo just wanted to get it into the market before the PSP.

Maybe one of the 20 other games coming out this year will appeal to you?

Seriously, you guys sound like the first gamers who tried out the Gamecube.

Are you doubting

-Power of the 360? Obviously not

-The graphics of launch games? As well you should. This happens with every console.

-Rare? Please, never stop. The company needs no more Conkers or Ghoulies.

Just chill out and stop making such dramatic posts. MS is going to sell every unit that's shipped with or without your help.

the two games I saw at the Kiosk were OK... nothing breathtaking...

I dont have that same WOW feeling I had when I saw PS2 games /Dreamcast games and all... I dont know, NBA Live made me feel that though....

unless there are no games that interest me at launch now. I'm shallow because of this? Do I need to look past enjoyment of what I'm playing and accept it's inner beauty?

Except that the very definition of a hardcore gamer (which is what I was refering to) is that of a gamer who needs to play everything, and when it comes out, not 2 years later, not 6 months later. Anyone who calls themselves a hardcore gamer and says they won't be buying a 360 at lauch is either: Unable to afford the system, or not a hardcore gamer.
Also a hardcore gamer can't stand the idea of being locked out of certain exclusives, which means today's harcore gamer must buy all machines, since the good exclusives are split.

Also I was saying shallow to base on just one demo kiosk, that's all. Lets face it, nobody has played the final retail versions of all the games. Final judgement can only really be put forth when the games are out.

And I don't understand how there could not be a single game at lauch that would look attractive to a gamer.....pretty much every major genre is well represented with a quality game.

QFT. While I despise the much-abused 'hardcore' tag, you aren't a really serious console gamer if you don't own them all (unless you can't afford them, or are SO specialized that all you care about is one or two very small genres like JRPG or rhythm).

Message boards will always be afire with the flames from the bitter who can't comfortably afford all systems. To rationalize their purchase, and burn off the steam that stems from their frustration, they bash the platforms that they do not own. You really shouldn't take them seriously, but they are desperate for attention. Some will always fall for their juvenile baiting.

And this was the case well before Microsoft entered the game. Who here does not remember the Mario Monks on USENET, and other similar trolls across the board(s).?

I'll gladly spend $400 for any system even if it only has one or two games that I want to play (fortunately, these days, that is not the case). I've dropped a lot more cash on arcade cabinets just to play one game. :)

This is such a bullshit definition. A 'hardcore gamer' is someone who takes games seriously - not someone who just buys indiscriminately. Someone who puts in a thousand hours of Advance Wars is surely a lot more 'hardcore' than someone who just drops it the moment the next shiny game comes out.

Only when the 360 is sitting in my media cabinet, the controller is in my hand and I'm playing it in pro-scan with 5.1 cranked am I going to make any kind of call as to how impressive or unimpressive it looks.

I'm loving Burnout Revenge and Far Cry right now and if I could get both of those games with 720p output with higher res textures at 60fps and a 2x - 4x increase in polycount I'd be really happy. Next gen is going to blow the doors off of that in time.

I never said it was a person who buys indescriminately. A hardcore gamer is not somebody who plays one game forever, that's just a person with an obsession. LOL

Really though, what hardcore gamer could look themselves in the eye and say they never owned an xbox? Or never owned a PS2? How could they, since there were too many great games on each system to ignore buying both platforms. Those who did not are just wanna be hardcore gamers who are fooling themselves, or people who just like playing text adventure games or watching tv more.

So the people who play tournament caliber VF/Quake/Warcraft/etc are total casuals now right? These are people who play games, not collect them. Most of them I know (shock) don't own more than one platform.
