PLAYERUNKNOWNS BATTLEGROUNDS Early Access Thread: This Is Battle Royale

I was in the top five last night, but then i was killed by the zone because me and another person had pinned each other down. At least they died as well.

It was mostly the way he snapped to a player on the roof miles away after killing me. Really unnatural movement.

Either way, I'm annoyingly missing it now and fancy a match. Maybe I was too hasty heh.
There's no killcam, how would you know he did that...?

Started playing this yesterday and I dig it so far. My only problem is performance in the first 5 minutes or so.

Jumping from the plane is the most stuttery experience, and buildings can take sometimes MINUTES to fully load in even as you stand directly next to them. My other gripe is the shrinking play area. I'd much rather have a goal or object that's pushing people forward instead of a an arbitrary moving wall.

Love the concept though! Any pointers on improving performance? I know one of my issues is that I only have 6GB of RAM currently

I found that dropping the scale from 100 to 90 helped a bit, as did turning of post-processing & blur.

I get the initial stuttering, but never seen the buildings take time to load in. Yeah, 6gb of RAM is going to hold you back a fair bit.

Had this happen to me too, kinda crappy since I got killed a couple times because I couldn't open the door since it wasn't even rendered in the first place lol

These Early Access games just chew up 6GB of RAM, I'm noticing more and more games that are completely saturating RAM rather than transferring efficiently. Likely just a lack of a performance pass since we are so early in development.

I thought the buildings LOD issues were fixed in the last patch? I must be mistaken, but I noticed they were fixed on my end.

RIGHT! I sit there for so long just staring at an ugly low-LOD building that looks like a cardboard box after a rainstorm LOL.

Yeah I'm working on upstanding to 16. I had 8 but one of my sticks died lol

Slowing getting a feel for the tempo of the game but I still feel terrified since my knowledge of the map is so terrible and I have no confidence in engagements since I've been in so few.

Hop into Discord and join in squads, nice way to learn ropes as you have people you can ask for stuff and looking at each others backs.

Walked downstairs with a shotgun in my hand, found an unarmed dude in the kitchen. He just froze there like a deer in headlights, hoping he wouldn't be seen if he didn't move.

I am pretty addicted to this game. I don't even care about winning at all. It's just fun. Every time I see another human, I just freak the fuck out.

I like the concept behind this game and there's a ton of potential, but I find it ends up getting stuck in 3 basic loops because it's so unfinished and unbalanced:

1. Look and remember where vehicles 100% spawn on that spawn chart map, try your best from the plane to get to the soonest one you can right away and drive to the guestimated ending location before someone else. Hunker down, as defenders have absolutely massive advantages. If you do not take advantage of this, someone else will and you will be at a huge disadvantage to going beyond the top 10.

2. Sit in some random building all game, see nobody, make it to the top 20 guaranteed without any effort until you are forced to enter the final few circles where you will be killed by people that did #1 or just got there through dumb luck.

3. Play the game like they expect you to. Drop from plane, search buildings, get gear, and move from cover to cover on foot to the next prime location in the battle circle. Try to level your gear as you go. Inevitably get shot from some random direction (because the map is so empty and sparse) and never see your killer (because there's no killcams in solo queue), end with an equivalent of an RNG death with absolutely no payoff and an empty feeling inside.

The problem is #1 is meta and boring. Vehicles need a tweak or completely random spawns. #2 is easy but I may as well not be playing at that point. #3 is just too frustrating for me. I always lose out to bad luck. Get my gear, look around, survey the land, make a plan, wait and listen, do everything I can to increase my odds, okay make my move! Dead. Shot from random direction. Start over.

This game needs 3 things, and then it would be absolutely amazing:

1. FPV only modes. I know it's coming, thank god. Can't wait for this. I don't like 3rd person shooters and it was explained well enough already why having god peek makes for a more random game than a fair one.

2. The map to not be so empty and sparse. There are some easy optimizations they could do with LOD to increase the mesh count and foliage count. Even the densest forest area is really empty and sparse. Only the cities feel dense and rich with tactical cover. The map is honestly too big for its own good. I would have rather had 1/2 the map size with double the care put into every area.

3. They need to optimize this game something fierce and fix a lot of the bugs. Nothing special here, all asked for before.

For the record, I'm not bashing this game. I think it's neat, just frustrating with the design. It really reminds me of Battlefield Bad Company 2's Rush mode a lot. The building layouts, the map design, the hunkering down or attacking a defended location. It's very similar, just a lot jankier, more sparse, and less forgiving (though sometimes more rewarding).

OMG I've finally made it but there's no chicken at the end for me just a random "And one winner, one !"

Only one kill as the last one got finished by the circle somehow, and that's actually the only 2 players I met all game. I landed in the shooting range and the final area was on the south Island so all I did was run.

My only performance issue is the audio becomes really laggy and surgery sometimes when server lag hits. It becomes very annoying to hear.

That's absolutely not true. I've never worried about where the cars are and have been on the Top 10 a few times solo already (also on Squad). You can't "guestimate" the ending location since the circle's center moves around a lot and the place you once thought would be the center, ended up being near the edge a bit later.

There are many ways to go about this, and while yes, you could basically limit the gameplay to 3 methods (run to the center and defend - hide - loot and then keep moving forward), you could do that for most games. In this game there's still a lot of thinking for how to approach areas, or things like using a vehicle to lure enemies to windows so your teammates can spot them, keep the engine on so the others can't hear the footsteps of your teammates entering the building or whatever, etc.. I've done a bunch of minor tactics that when they work out as planned, make you feel quite great.

The game needs a ton of fixing though, but it's Early Access and to me it's already way more fun than so many fully finished titles out there.

It seems like grenades explode on impact with a player? I chucked a grenade at a guy last night and it exploded as soon as it hit his face (lucky throw, for sure). Must have been in the air for a second or two tops.

This is a viable method, but I almost never play this way. I generally like to jump into more medium traffic areas, and then move with the circle as it closes down. Others jump into high traffic areas specifically to PVP, then requeue when it's over.

There are multiple ways to play the game and still be successful. You may be using one of the most optimal methods, but if you feel like you're beating your head against a wall, why continue?

This game makes me want a PC, was watching some team streams last night and it looks like a blast.

There are so many games similar to this on PC that you would likely enjoy, just pull the trigger.

They are on a 5 second fuse as soon as you pop the pin.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

Nah, I have plenty of other shit I need to spend money on before a gaming PC. Maybe if this year is a boom for my business.

I will just hold a small flicker of hope for a console release at some point, but not actually think it will happen.

I know this is a separate game based off of an Arma mod, but for those that have played Arma 3 with dayz and epoch mods, do you prefer this or arma 3?

I prefer Arma from a gameplay point of view, but automated matchmaking makes it a lot easier to actually get into and play matches. There's also some nice additions like being able to choose where you want to drop out of the plane that I think make for a nice change.

Man I listened to the latest Giant Bombcast yesterday while mowing my lawn and

really it's not too surprising but it still kinda irks me?

the fact that when people look for points of reference for Battle Royale, it's always H1Z1 and Ark and DayZ. Never ARMA though
Don't understand how those pieces of shit became well-known but people still don't know 'bout ARMA

Arma had a niche audience before mods like DayZ, Life and Wasteland. I know, i was in that audience, but when those mods came out the player count exploded. They were much more accessable game modes for regular people to play for those not interested in the military sim Arma is at heart. For all of its jankiness and nuances, it's a great engine for these mods to exist on and without Arma these games probably wouldn't exist, but it's these mods that propelled the popularity and that's why they're referenced more than the base game imo.

Fellow Gaf just bought me a copy. Gonna download it while the Wife and I go do some Easter shit. Hopefully play later tonight. Game looks fun.

I can consistently get top 20 or even 10 but then I fall apart, I only just realised the blue wall decimates you near the end but when I get down to the end part i just get murdered repeatedly! Must be panic or something.

A lot can depend on where the circle pushes you at the end. Sometimes you just get the shit end of the stick and are forced to run across an open field with only knee high bushes for cover. Best advice I would say is as soon as a blue circle finishes closing and a new timer starts, immediately start planning where you're gonna reposition and how soon. Also, smoke grenades can be a saving grace in those Top 10 situations if somebody has you pinned behind a tree or something and there's no nearby cover to run to.

this game is the dark souls of first person shooters. 90% of the time, when I die, it's because I made a bad choice at some point. I'm rarely feel like I died and there was absolutely nothing I could have done to prevent it.

They need to bring on the first person only servers. They also need to fix the aiming in third because the reticle is off where your gun is actually pointing.

So much of this game is based on hearing people's footsteps, gunfire, and where they are in general that playing without headphones seems like such a disadvantage.

Second game in a row where I corner a guy in a room, and then shots fire out from thin air from absolutely no possible position, multiple times.

I feel like with a year of polish this game could be goty material but god there is just so much jank

Still fun because of how fucking tense it gets as the play zone shrinks
