PLAYERUNKNOWNS BATTLEGROUNDS Early Access Thread: This Is Battle Royale

Damn you all. Think I'll pick it up next week.

30-40 mins sounds OK but I don't have bucketloads of time these days.

If your rounds last ~30min from get go then you are natural BG player. Expect them to short and quick rounds as you start getting to know this game :D

It's amazing. Just do it.

You can jump out immediately and attempt to kill as many people in the area as possible. This will bring the average time each round is significantly lol

Haha, cool. Thanks.

Re my "Battle Royale" fantasy game from when I was younger: got it right after watching the Japanese film and reading the book.

I remember thinking it was an absolutely perfect model for an online game and being shocked nobody had made one yet. I.e. an open map with lots of players and random weapons, last man standing being the winner. (Obviously this has added the much quicker 'dead zone'. Does this game capture that vibe at all? I mean, how intense, scary and brutal the film was. It seemed like such a perfect fit for a videogame.

The closer the circle gets, the more intense it gets. My heart feel like it's beating out of my chest when it gets small and there are less than 10 people left. The margin for error at that point is very slim.

Doesn't feel as "wild" as the movie, feels more tactical and calculated. Especially when playing with a 4 man group. Figuring out vantage points and positioning. Systematically clearing houses. The beginning is filled with a lot of long range fights, seeing someone on the other side of a field and trying to snipe them before they see you. Or getting shot at from somewhere and trying to figure out what hill they're crawling on.

Sounds cool, especially the intensity.

I guess what i liked the most about the book/film was the completely random nature of the gear (eg sauce pans and lighters) and how it escalated gradually. That would obviously lead to some fucked up pacing in a real video game.

Is it just me or is there a bit of a SOCOM vibe to the camera angle and mid range combat?

In this BG you can't really rush around and expect to survive long. Game has certain level of slowness and requires some tactical thinking as you can die in just few hits, even when wearing armor. Position etc. matters, a lot.

Get into Top 10 and feel how intense shit gets. Circle is small at that point and will only get smaller, forcing everyone to fight. Overtime you get more used to it and it isn't as intense feeling anymore, but it's still test of your skill (and luck).

Is it just me or is there a bit of a SOCOM vibe to the camera angle and mid range combat?

For me reference point would be in ArmA 3 if ArmA 3 was tad more arcady game. Position, timing, stance, optics etc etc. all matter in engagements in BG because you can go down so fast.

I'm so close to buying this, but that £27 price point is pretty brutal. For perspective, that's like $35. It's JUST too much for me to dive in.

But I've been dreaming of a realistic survival battle royale type game since I was about 13 years old.

Is it worth it?
I rarely buy full price PC games, and years of Steam sales have conditioned me to think even $10 is too expensive sometimes. I'm also very wary of Early Access and have all but ignored all those popular open world survival games the past few years.

And yet, I bought this game on a whim after seeing the GB quick look and I couldn't be happier that I did. It's worth every penny.

Yeah i wasn't expecting speed; more chaos. This is obviously a more measured thing though.

Cool, well i guess SOCOM pretty much was a military shooter that erred on the arcadey side. I'm familiar with ArmA 2 if not 3, so think that's an apt comparison.

Sounding great, thanks everyone!

Nice one. I'm very used to EA now after owning a Vive for a year, but even those rarely broke £20. This looks v worth it.

I'm curious what does everyone find best as a way of crossing areas that are big open spaces?

I seem to get picked off all the time by people I don't see. If possible, I always try to stay near trees or bushes or something as some sort of cover. And I've attempted to prone crawl my way through a wheat field or taller grass. But I don't think that really matters from a distance as I have a feeling a lot of the grass or wheat or whatever don't show up for other players who are further away.

I am playing the game on max settings and after a certain distance, I can't really see some of the plants and stuff on my own screen past a certain distance. So another player crawling around in what they think is cover like I have done, tends to make them easier to spot.

Someone said to turn down foliage to low while keeping everything high, but I don't think it makes as much of a difference as it used to.

As for getting across fields - If I'm outside as hell of the safe circle, I just sprint through wide open fields and seem to be okay. If I'm inside/close to the safe circle, I try to crouch-run my way through the trees if at all possible.

I've found I've died more while trying to sneak through trees than I have through sprinting through fields though.

One option is to grab any vehicle and boost across fast, then ditch vehicle asap afterwards as they attract so much attention.

If you have to run across just try maintain humane distance to any possible hard cover while trying to remain in bushes etc. as much as possible. Basically you need to track where is nearest larger trees, rocks, buildings or even just ditch that can lower you below ground level when in prone. Then just pray no one with good rifle and ability to aim is tracking you from somewhere.

You want to spend as little time as possible in open so just run.

I generally haven't had any issues if I manage to get my hands on a vehicle. It's definitely the on foot in open spaces that screws me over. If there is time, I will for sure stay near any sort of cover I can and take a longer route to do so if I can. But more often than not it comes down to time vs. distance to the safe circle, which is how I end up in the wide open spaces

I think you're right as I tend to die sneaking more than sprinting. I'll try to avoid any crawling.

All I know is that even though it sucks like all hell to run through open spaces in this game, it does a great job at creating tension and stressing me out.

Crossing open spaces is nasty and always roll of an dice. All it takes is player with good weapon and aim to ruin your day on open field. Great for tension and that "shit, shit, shit... this sucks" feeling, like you mentioned.

If you have to take shortest route then just take shortest route, but still try track possible hard cover locations and locations that give you some concealment when ran through or along. You can only try minimize risk, be aware possible cover spots and get across as fast as possible.

I've played almost 60 hours and when I get to the top 10 I' m still as nervous as I was in my first hour. It's soooooooo good.

I just can't stop playing this game. This is the most fun I've had in an online shooter in so long. Each round feels intense, especially when "20 Alive" comes up. My heartbeat gets so fast, i start sweating, and my alertness goes up to 100. I have to stop playing this game an hour or so before I go to bed, otherwise the adrenaline will keep me up all night.

Even started making little videos of me and my friends playing. I got my first solo win a few days ago, and got 3 squad wins under my belt. This game man...so good.

Is it me or do circles end up near the edges of the map way more often now? Maybe I've just been lucky, but I haven't seen nearly as many around Pochinki. Loving it.

This is the first game of its kind for me and I enjoy the concept, but I'm kind of turned off by the complete lack of personality and character. Are there any other Battle Royale style games that are worth checking out?

Depends what you mean with personality. H1Z1 is far more arcady game, but afaik has all kinds of weird costumes etc. you can get.

H1Z1 I guess?

I know this is a daft question to ask, but any chance of this going on sale any time soon? I might be able to afford this in a few months but I fear the hype will have died by then!

The only decent one beside this one is The Culling.

Crawling along the edge of a cliff face, wedged between rocks

Hear an engine in the distance

Spot a buggy drive up

Hear a brief skirmish between the driver and someone else ahead of you

Winner is moving along the rocks

They don't see you

They're getting prone to watch the buildings over the cliff

Sneak around rocks to avoid any possible detection

Line up the perfect headshot

Squeeze the trigger

Bullets hit an invisible hitbox extending half a foot above the rocks ahead of you, target spins around and shoots you to death instantly

No sales expected.

BG isn't going anywhere any time soon.

I wouldn't hold my breath on that. Maybe a few months after the game is released(September AFAIK).

I relate to this travesty. Happened this week.

Had my first match.

Found some great gear in a house no one else seemed to go near.

Crept along a field, gunfire in the distance

Turned around at one point to find someone sneaking up on me. Shotgunned them to death. Went prone in terror. Looted them.

Crept into the safe circle then eventually got picked off from a grassy knoll.

Awesome.

In my second match ever last night I got 2nd place. Only had two encounters. I messed up in the end and panicked at the last moment thinking 2 left meant me and two others and waiting too long to move thinking they'd pick each other off. When I realized I'd have to move, I came out of a little shack and got in a firefight with the last player. We both got a couple of good hits in but he got me in the end because I lost sight of him.

Any gaf groups going on? Might be fun to try a group. I heard grouping with rando's ends up with you getting shot by team mates.

Good going! I just got to the last 20 in my second ever match. Didn't really get the strategy though and kept moving near the end which is an error.

Id be up for a sesh but need to go to bed now. Damn life.

90% of the time I can tell which direction a shot is coming from.

The other 10% of the time I circle around a tree and the shooter is still somehow shooting at me on every direction without me seeing.
