PlayStation 4 Sales Surpass 7.0 Million Units (April 6th), 20.5M Software (April 13)

Ma, why on earth are so many people thinking this is going to be such a crazy NPD? I wouldn't be surprised if PS4 won, nor would I be surprised if XB1 won. They both got a big exclusive last month.

Because Bish posted a picture of a bunker, hinting at possible craziness perhaps.

Because after the exuberant marketing around Titanfall and consistent price drops for the Xbox One bundle, it'd be somewhat of a shocker to see Sony win.

Xbox One basically had a $110 price drop for the entire month and had Titanfall release, their most hyped exclusive for now and the foreseeable future. I'd be shocked if Xbox One didn't clear at least 400K units and possibly beat Sony.

Most people are in the same boat. Although it wouldn't surprise me to see Sony win because I don't think the incentives are doing as much as MS hopes.

The PS4 had infamous last month, i am pretty sure it moved a lot of units too(if there are any considering the supply constraints especially in europe).

You're expecting way too much. Historically, numbers are usually down from Febuary to March, so these predictions of 400k + are really far fetched imo. I for one think PS4 will beat Xbox One. I also think that Infamous has a good chance of charting higher than Titanfall. We shall see.

On this very site people were saying the same things after January's numbers.

I'm bringing beer. Everyone cool with Sam Adams Summer Ale?

Is it weird if I get drunk for npd numbers? Don't answer that, I'll do it anyways.

He sounds kind of pissed.

How does he sound pissed?

"I care that I worked on a game that I can sit down and enjoy playing. The fact that people enjoy it and it has made enough that we [get to] continue supporting it as a studio, that’s to me a success. We make games because we love them and we want other people to play them with us."

Titanfall had a really tough development cycle and it largely sounds like the game was mostly developed within 18 months after they locked down what they wanted the game to be.

He probably really doesn't actually give a shit about if it's the best selling Xbox One game or whatever the sales-related questions were at PAX East.

It basically would mean both consoles are continuing on their same current path of trajectory.

You guys get way to into this stuff... *shrug*

It's fine if you're not into this stuff, but I really think you're missing the mark. It's not continuing along the current path when a) Microsoft's mega-hyped exclusive launched this month and b) The console's price was essentially dropped thanks to discounts. Because of those two things, Sony winning another month would be massive news.

For the love of God, don't forget the can opener.
I usually just rub the can against concrete. Much more efficient than those damn can openers. Just let mother nature do all the hard work for you.

I keep wondering about why MS has been utterly silent since Titanfall release.

Not sure I'd completely write this off. The "new" generation of gamers (ages 15 and under) are spending most of their time gaming on their phones and tablets at home. I can attest to this as one of my younger cousins (age 12) almost exclusively games on his iPad. I had to force him to play some games on Steam and my PS3 to open his eyes. And even that took quite an effort. He was simply hating anything that wasn't iOS/mobile gaming. Now... after much effort he has seen the light and desires a gaming console and a gaming capable PC. I just don't think the newer generations see the value in console gaming that we do. I hope I'm wrong.

Sony's mega hyped exclusive also launched this month and all the bundles did was get it to price parity. Add the fact that the PS4 was available for the full month for the first time and I can't see what would be surprising about it winning.

Infamous wasn't mega hype and isn't a big franchise. Although i do agree that ps4 seemed to be more available towards the end of march.

if by "hyped" you mean "game to briefly stunt the ridiculous AAA drought"... I honestly don't think inFAMOUS was a system seller at all. at. all. I would guess the majority of sales of it came from existing owners, or people who were going to buy a PS4 in/around March regardless. Don't get me wrong. I absolutely believe it saw great sales. But the series has traditionally never been a system seller.

You have to hope tastes and values change as they get older. I think if you even have the smallest inkling of an enthusiast mindset you would gradually evolve to meatier, more traditional (and I think more meaningful) game experiences. Only if gaming is to you what it is to 45 year-old housewives everywhere then I don't think things will get better.

I disagree about infamous. Adverts everywhere and half of GAF was wearing a beannie, including me. It was well hyped and the sales show that.

Infamous isn't a Mega Hyped Sony franchise. Those are anything by ND and Gran Turismo.

Despite this news, I still think MS has March. It's destined. All them sales left and right.. There's just no way Sony has got this in the bag. If I were to predict, Sony would probably be off 50k off of what MS would sell but nonetheless, MS has this.

a) inFAMOUS was not hyped even remotely to the level of Titanfall. The media were hailing Titanfall as a game-changer.
b) Titanfall is a COD-esque FPS, while inFAMOUS was never a big seller on PS3.
c) Price parity is not relevant. Consoles always receive a large boost after a price drop.

Hyped on gaf =/= hyped in the real world (that is, the people that buy 90% of games)

That said, it did sell well and I'm VERY surprised to see it behind Thief (at least in digital sales).

Beer is nice and cold in the fridge at home. May pickup a bottle of wine also. Making homemade pizza with the wife. Going to sit back and enjoy this tonight :)

If its only 50k win for MS that is worrisome after all they did. Will be interesting to see since sony sent a good amount of ps4's towards the end of march. in feb there was similar stealth price cuts for MS but they fell short.

You guys here really believe Sony does everything just to win NPD?!? This is way blown out of proportion!

It's not a case of Sony spending inordinate amounts of money to screw Microsoft over. They just allocate their shipments strategically to score a PR victory or at the very least, mitigate the effects of Microsoft victory. The consoles were going to be sold out anyway, what does it matter where they were shipped.

I am cautiously leaning towards Sony taking March. There's just too much anecdotal evidence (Infamous breaking a million in nine days, Amazon charts, what I've read here about Best Buy sales). I don't know, this has been a seriously weird generation so far.

I agree with you to some extent. I actually thought that it was interesting that Sony was able to turn their B-tier ( I meant sales, not quality! ) infamous to combat against Microsoft hyped up Titanfall in some ways.

I'm beginning to understand the brilliance of Bish's bunker post. By posting that image GAF hyperbole and anxiety has reached so much of a high that by the time the NPDs are actually posted people will be like, "that's it?"

Master manipulator.

The only meltdowns that should occur is if Sony manages to outsell Xbox One in March. All other scenarios are way more probable given "system seller" Titanfall and many, many, many price cuts and sales/"pricing errors" *cough*.

If Sony wins March, MS might have to wait until Halo 5 to win another month. That would spell trouble for the $500 TF box
