PlayStation 4: Web reaction to Sony's 'invisible' console

Seriously, the more I think about, the more I wonder. Are general tech websites also poo-pooing on new SLR camera's because they're not smartphones? Is a new GPS system shot down before it even releases just because it's not on iOS or Android? I'm an avid android user, even play some games on it now and then, but there's a time and a place for it, just like there is for consoles. This all-encompassing system most tech journalists seem to want, is my worst nightmare.

Maybe do some research first? SLR sales are up while smartphones have replaced standard point and shoot devices. Consumers are actually buying high end cameras for certain occasions. It makes perfect sense also.

Sony made it loud and clear that it was about games and features surrounding it. Even if you do not understand computer games the features segment did not sublimate to have not been noticed. This event was all about wetting the appetites while ensuring leeway be reserved for reactionary changes post XB3 reveal prior to E3.

Pertaining to box and price, it's clear that they are still under development. We still are not aware if they will try the same maneuver as MS with subscription based model.

And pertaining to NYT article, the guy is not cognizant of what it means to game on a console/pc as opposed to mobile. Remote play notwithstanding, I would love to see how that imbecile can play games like Witcher, Fallout, Uncharted, GT6 etc on a mobile platform with limited storage and even more limiting specs not to mention the small screen. This is reminiscent of Fox news blaming games for violence. Although mass market, much like most electronics, consoles have their own target market and are the farthest things from generic produces.

One point of personal criticism is that aside from not having more first party teasers, I was hoping to see how the controller would function with the dual cameras. Even a tease prior to E3 would have been welcome. But once again, it strikes me as a reactionary tactic.

The Verge article is the makes most sense.

*insert woman posting to social media on cell phone, before holding her new born baby pic here* .... and no im not kidding it really does exist

Social networks have really exposed people's natural tendency to seek attention. I fear for the world.

So what if they hated the presentation. Big effing deal.

Have you watched it? They didn't just hate it they trolled it non stop. Hell one of their own called them on that at the end of the video, you can see his frustration.

Are you shocked that Polygon acted like after the crow aegis had to eat?

I am shocked because at the end of the day I thought they were gamers, but they were acting like chills from the very start.

And they are dumb too, really agnis was shown on a PS3 last summer and a Ps4 now? Really? Oh it's Dragons Dogma 2 really? Nobody pays attention to the damn trailer.

I really, really don't understand how mobile devices are disrupting console gaming. But perhaps that is just the type of gamer I am. No mobile device currently can replace my pc/console gaming experience. None. I certainly hope there are enough of us out there to prove these analysts wrong by buying these consoles in droves for the reasons gamers have always bought them.

The mainstream press is used to Apple style announcements. That's where the backlash comes from. As much hype as Sony put into this thing, they really should have at least showed off what it looked like.

This 99 cent game bubble will burst eventually...

These people are honestly comparing games like Angry Birds to experiences like Skyrim. Why isn't there a place for both?

I decided to check mainstream public reaction on Yahoo news to see all the hyped people on there all excited about the PS4.

Instead every single comment was negative about not wanting social, not wanting to spend $400+ on it, being angry there's no BC, a few that came to the conclusion it couldn't play used games, and one that was angry about no longer getting PS3 games because they just got a PS3. Oh and many asking where the box was.

...this is why we don't listen to mainstream and come to our own conclusions. But mainstream reaction did not look positive which I found so weird.

That's EXACTLY what I'm arguing. Consoles are the high end equivalent of smartphone gaming, just like SLRs are to smartphone camera's.

It’ll be interesting to see how the press react to the 720 if they thought the PS4 reveal was underwhelming.

But he's right.

You guys needs to stop with the "Bu, bu, but the media hates Sony" spouting. And stop acting like you're the all knowing wise guys who has all the right answers.

And lets not forget how fast you guys praise these guys if they say something positive about your company/system of choice. Double standards.

:lol conspiracy theorists in here

Yeah, gauging from acquaintances who are not console gamers, these media pieces parallel to what they think as well.

All talk. Let's not forget about moving goal posts and what happened with the PS3's final specs and feature set with updates removing features.

They probably don't have the final design of the console down yet and were showing everything on dev kits. I honestly don't care the full unveiling will be at E3 with a launch date and pricing. We were shown that the hardware exists, what's under the hood and some amazing games.

Everyone should be happy but surprisingly nobody seems to be.

Core gamers kept this thing going for years with expensive tech and games. Let the newcomers play the shallow phone stuff. Market will contract a bit but things will be fine. People that love the medium will pay for quality. Others wont pay more than 99 cents.

Neither side will convince the other. Gaming being focused on the core is going back to Its roots. Sounds good to me. Don't care about sales from mobile games half of that is grandma that used to play on PC, now on her phone.

People are foolish to think mobile graphics will keep rising. Heat and wattage envelope say Its near a peak for the size factor. Would not be worried man.

The reaction from random people people on Twitter was just as lukewarm. I think it's gotten a lot more difficult to WOW people with new consoles and new technology these days. The reaction to the next Xbox will be just as muted. It's like no one really cares, even the fan boys aren't as excited as they used to be in previous gens.

They can do what they want. Doesn't mean we can't complain about it though!

You can't be serious with this post considering what you do in Media Create threads. The PS3 was shit on for years and rightfully so.

That they didn't show the console was idiocy, it really made me feel like a fool for tuning in. If they weren't ready for that then forget the whole thing.

The games shown were more of the same, with the AAA action games being obsessed with concepts of paranoia, societal control, fear and violence.

As far as mobile being a "fad" - the fuck?

Maybe shitty F2P mobile games are a fad but mobile computing devices are not a fad - lol. Like...mobile has been big since the Walkman. Why wouldn't someone want cool mobile tech?

I'm not a fanboy, but I feel just as excited now as I was in 2005/6.

Yet when Apple announces a smaller, expensive, technically dated tablet like the mini, everybody's gushing on about their brilliant move.

I'd go as far as to say ppl believe they're MS PR lackeys judging from this thread.

I'd more go with Apple, Starbucks, VW, tie-dye rump-swabs, but to each their own... The times piece wasn't a fanboy reaction, it was more of a generalization and inditment on console gaming as a whole... Complete garbage; so much so even the PC race should be angry..

Yet when Apple announces a smaller, expensive, technically dated tablet like the mini, everybody's gushing on about their brilliant move.

Lemmings I tell ya.....There is some kinda secret sauce in those Apple devices..

Let's indeed forget the PS3 as it has nothing in common with PS4 besides being the same company behind it. The development environment is different, the head system architect is different, the industry is different, the core philosophies of the device are different. If they announced backwards compatibility through some pseudo "Emotion Engine" solution I would give you more credit in those remarks.

Can anyone provide a brief paraphrased view of the event because I really do not want to give them a hit.

It's too big a video for me to really summarize it, so I'm gonna put their trolling aside and just give you a piece of their grasp for this kind of stuff.

They say Agnis was shown last year on a Ps3, and now on a PS4. So they were sad that it looked the same lol

Yet when Apple announces a smaller, expensive, technically dated tablet like the mini, everybody's gushing on about their brilliant move.

Apple knows how to do presentations though.

What was the point of showing off the console on February 20th when there is no box?

First impressions will be that Sony was not ready and unprofessional.

Is the console available now? Nope.

They're talking release date and price point. No one outside of the hardcore really cares about the architecture.

Wired is supposed to service the hardcore demographic though, they SHOULD care about architecture.

Unless Wired is just a bunch of pseudo-techy journos who know fuck all about the industry they cover....

Just like Nintendo is shit on for pretty much all the right reasons now (regarding Wii U)? Nintendo has made 1 right choice for every 10 bad ones with the Wii U. And they deserve everything handed to them at the moment.

Major Nelson taking jabs!

New York Times:
New features cannot hide the fact that PlayStation 4 is still a console, a way of playing games on compact discs that was cool when cellphones were not smart.

I hate comments like this. It's like saying cinemas are dead because I can watch a tv show at home instead. They're two different things.

I lol'd!

But yeah...it was weird seeing a company talk about a console and not show the console!

Showing a product that may not yet be finished aesthetic-wise is probably a bad idea.

Sony learned from the 2005 fiasco of having a smaller-scale model of what the ps3 would be like, or the batarang controller that came with it.

It's not so much that they hate sony, I get the feeling they hate console/pc gaming for some reason associated with mobile devices and tablets, but I'm not sure how liking mobile devices means you have to shit on console/pc gaming.

I wanted a price but I knew that wasn't happening. And people really expected them to show the console? 1 its probably not finalized, 2 they aren't gonna blow their load this freaking early, 3 that's what e3 is for. As a gamer I wanted to see it but it would be a stupid move to put everything out right now. Do people want them to just repeat everything that's already been announced at e3 or something?

The difference is between what's deserved and what's not.

Why do you need to see the console?

And who the fuck is MICROSOFT to talk about announcing a console without showing the actual console?

Good on Sony for having the balls to show early.
Kaz probably pushed for this.
Too bad Kaz wasn't there.

At least it exists as a technical sheet:

Which is more than I can say from some presentations. These are some horrible media reactions though. New York Times especially... what is wrong with them...

Well it gets problematic when the non gaming media jumps on the hype train for this conference. They expected something big. Some redefining things.

What they got are just some "questionable" features and games in "better graphics". They don't see why anyone with a PS3 or other consoles should spend more than 400$ for such an "update".

New York Times:
New features cannot hide the fact that New York Times is still a newspaper, a way of reading news on paper that was cool when cellphones were not smart.

I'm more concerned about what a console is capable of; not how it looks. Appearance is purely cosmetic, and yes, it would have been the icing on the cake to see the finalised design of Sony's next system. But could you imagine what the response would have been if what occured was the other way round, and Sony held the console aloft like a trophy all during the event, but didn't bother to enlighten the world on its specs and features?

There's always E3.

Honestly, I think they're a bunch of dimwits. This was the most informative unveiling ever. And the fact they didn't see the physical casing or aren't smart enough to process the info they were given and understand the significance of what they saw... that's their problem. Lack of analytical ability is why they consistently miss hits and fail to see incoming bombas. If they can deliver what they promised last night, Sony just won next gen. And this is from someone who thought consoles were going to limp out of existence after this final round.

Have these folks ever heard of E3? Sony gotta save some stuff to show off...

And who cares what it looks like...hey everybody it's probably gonna be a black squared box with logos on it!

The msm thinks that the future of gaming is Angry Birds: Champion Edition on the iPad 17, so there's no real fear to be had that they'll influence public opinion. People will see past their ineptitude and decide for themselves if they want the ps4.

They won't influence public opinion, because it IS public opinion. Traditional console gaming has been a niche market for some time, and it is odd that so many people on GAF didn't apparently realize this until the PS4 announcement.

So the OP data mined the new for negative stuff? Wow...
