PlayStation 5 Leak Reveals New ‘Low Power’ Mode, Fueling Handheld Console Reports

Since its going to launch very close with the PS6 it will be curious to see if PS6 has any exclusive games and what this handheld will do with those games

And have no idea either, I am not implying anything as I will be curious as well

I just don't like the idea of it being able to play PS6 games

1. It'll create a Series S situation

2. Compatibility and branding needs to be simple, call it "PS5 Portable"

3. PS5 will get cross-gen games 4 years after PS6 comes out

4. PS5 will get indies for years after that

The biggest issue with the Series S is the forced parity

Xbox Series is a console though, things have to be kept simple, all games must run on all models.

You can't have a situation where games run on a case by case basis, nor can the likes of Sony and Nintendo juggle 2 different platforms anymore (home and handheld).

Launching a PS5 portable when the PS6 comes out is a surefire way to make sure the device fails.

Mandating that developers support the handheld device with feature-parity is the same issue I had with the Xbox Series S, and that hamstrings games on the more powerful consoles. If Sony does this, then they deserve backlash.

Personally, I think it would be smarter for Sony to release the PlayStation Portable 2 (PSP2) as a standalone device like the original PSP was, and let companies make games specifically for that device as they want. They can release a PSP2 version of an existing PS5/PS6 game if they want, or they can release PSP2 exclusive games.

It will be interesting to see how Sony handles this.

DOA

It's not the mid 00s anymore where games take a couple of years to make and Sony can support both PSP and PS3

Sony couldn't support PSVita and PS4, and Nintendo couldn't support Wii U and 3DS.

I disagree. Your point about increased development cycles is valid, but Sony supporting the PSP2 and the PS6 isn't some herculean task. When third-party developers can support XSS, XSX, NS, PS5, PS5 Pro, and PC releases simultaneously, why would you think it would be any different for a PSP2? The main game is made for platform 1. Then the developers port the game to platforms 2, 3, 4, et cetera. A port is less work than initial development. Both Sony and third-party developers could port games to the PSP2 with relative ease (unless Sony really bungles this like they did with the PS3).

Additionally, third-party developers could target the PSP2 specifically. Not every game has to be a AAA or AAAA title. The PSP2 could be a powerhouse for indie titles, and it would be a perfect fit for 2D-HD titles. This kind of device could allow developers to introduce some more creativity into their games. Too many titles are all about graphics, and they fail on gameplay, story, or both. While I still want there to be games that push graphical limits, this type of device would be for more casual games, and it would give developers an excuse to not have graphical fidelity as their sole/primary focus.

These are my thoughts on what a Playstation handheld looks like in 2027-2028
  • Will be called the Playstation Portal 2 or PSP2 for short
  • Compatible with all PS4, 5, and 6 games when teathered to the PS6 (games running on the PS6).
  • Select PS6, and most PS4 and 5 games will be playable un-teathered to the PS6 (games running on the PSP2).
  • Only games that are fully compatible can purchased in the PSP2s version of the PS Store.
  • Multiple PSP2's can connect to a single PS6 for local multiplayer or for family game sharing.
So the Playstation Portal 2 would still be the ulitimate companion device for the PS6 and be a proper handheld on its own.
