PS5 power saver mode hints at PS5 handheld

Sony is starting to test a new Power Saver mode for PS5 consoles that will allow games to "run with lower power consumption." The Power Saver mode is being revealed as part of a new PS5 system update beta today, which lets you to pair a DualSense controller with multiple devices.

The new PS5 Power Saver mode will scale back game performance in favor of lower power consumption, and sounds ideal for Sony's rumored PlayStation handheld. "While this feature won't be available during the beta phase, once it officially launches, supported PS5 games will scale back performance and will allow your PS5 to reduce its power consumption when the feature is enabled optionally by gamers," says Shuzo Kikuchi, vice president of product management at Sony Interactive Entertainment.

I love them hiding this under the guise of trying to achieve net-zero. How can devs not want to support such a lofty aim, the fact that a handheld may come that utilises this and may increase their sales should sweeten the pot. :messenger_beaming:

Indeed

It suggests to me that they aim to have all PS5 games running on PS5 handheld, and that thorough testing (including base PS5 console users) will be done on games well in advance of launch.

Handheld makes no sense unless it's a tiny thing like a psp.

Portal is just. Better because you play games at full ps5 quality. It only needs oled and hdr

Does that mean MLiD was correct?

I would be all over a dedicated PS5 handheld. But I assume it´s going to be all digital, no way it can be used to play discs, unless Sony slaps a screen and thumbsticks on one of their portable cd players from the 90s, lol.

I love my Portal, but there are times when I would love some offline gaming capabilities (with trophies).

Why is this not going to be a series s situation that ruins gaming in a lot of ways like the XSS did?

Ah those lofty net zero goals and other things.

Actually, this is SIE itself confirming the existence of such mode, so it does deserve a new thread.

Because Portal only works online. I had to sell mine after a month because its basically useless in most hotels

Handelds are for people to play away from the home, handheld cane be the size of Switch 2/Steamdeck or Vita, either way as long as I can play offline Ill buy it

If a true independent (with extras if you own a PS5 or whatnot) PlayStation handheld was in the works I might be tempted. I would beg Sony not to make proprietary add ons like memory cards. The coast of a Vita memory card was fucking mental for so little.

And of course, a new Soul Sacrifice would be nice.
