PlayStation Mobile Thread of Indie Games, and Apps on Android/Vita

Based on the wording of that post PlayStation Mobile hasn't launched yet. I guess this is really just the test bed, and the real launch will begin once the SDK goes public.

I said before that this smelled like an open beta, and Sony's actually said as much themselves:

The question remains: If adding more functionality from the rest of the PlayStation family of products is such a priority, why didn't the PlayStation Mobile platform launch with more of those features incorporated?

"There's actually a method to our madness to launching in this sort of minimal, viable product standpoint, or a beta," Thomson added. "We're calling it a beta launch. It's because we want developers and our gamers to give us feedback real time, on, 'What do you like? What would you like to see improve? What would you like to see come out in the future?' So the gaming community and the development community are genuinely shaping what our offering evolves into."

Speaking with independent developers at IndieCade recently, many reported that Sony's mobile team had approached them for publishing and co-marketing deals. Some of those developers say they've already signed on to bring their content to PlayStation Mobile. Developers cited relatively short exclusivity arrangements as one of the reasons they planned to bring titles to Sony's mobile platform.

Haha, I especially enjoyed this part:

There will also be a 1940s themed “vintage mode” that will skin the game in all black and white as well as replace the normal game’s techno with jazz.

I kinda got tired of Geometric Warfare pretty early on in this generation, but that little tidbit, plus the 60 second strict time limit, could get me to like this, if the price is right.

What...the point isn't for Sony IPs to come to phones. It's for smartphone game makers to more easily put their games out to a broader audience.

I'm not thinking ports of existing games, I'm thinking spin-offs. I'd play a Pitfall-ey Uncharted on my phone, and so would millions of other people as well. It'd also help the Uncharted brand.

Never heard of it but that sounds pretty good.

Not the point of the service and probably won't happen.

Isn't that pretty much why Gameloft exists?

Gameloft tries to ape the real thing. If I'm getting it right, Shtof wants to see other kinds of games with these brands.

I don't think that's likely at all, but I wouldn't mind for example an Uncharted themed "find the treasure" puzzle game, or a Gran Turismo themed car collecting card game, and things like that.

They should do a modern port with higher res and psn integration of GOW: Betrayal though, the game was supposed to be pretty good, was coded in java, and would give a good exclusive to set start the initiative.

Uncharted "temple run" ripoff. someone do it.
See, this is what I'm talking about.

Not the point of the service and probably won't happen.
The point of the service should be to make money and strengthen the Playstation brand. At the moment I think it's having a hard time doing any of those.

Yeah, Gameloft know their shit around the mobile business. Let them make an Uncharted Temple Run clone. They made good Splinter Cell and Prince of Persia spin-offs back in the PS2 era. I played a lot more on my phone back then, those were good games.

GoW: Betrayal is too old and was made to be played with actual buttons. Btw, it wasn't all that good.

2D sidescrolling Pixel Art Gravity Rush PSMobile Minigame? (Tap screen to Gravity Kick... all day!)

Unit 13 Commando-style Ripoff? (Guarenteed to be better than Megaman Xover!)

Ragnarok Odyssey Mobile game that recreates R.Odyssey gameplay, with Ragnarok Online Spritework? (Or... y'know... just give us Ragnarok Battle Offline!)

I wouldn't mind seeing PSMobile used as a suppliment to Vita game development, not in the slightest.

As some of you guys already mentioned, Sony did do a bunch of Java based games in their existing franchises:

Ape Escape M
God of War: Betrayal
LocoRoco Hi
Q*bert
Ratchet & Clank: Going Mobile
SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs: Mobile Recon
Wild Arms Kōya no Nichō Kenjū

There's probably even more I've never come across.

I bought the PSM version of Cubixx for $2.99 (it's $1.00 less than the PSP minis version released a couple years ago). It's a simple, fun puzzle/arcade game--sort of a 3D version of Qix. For me this is the perfect kind of game to play when listening to a podcast. Here's a gameplay trailer for the original PSP minis release:

It's to give people the ability to make games that work across phones, tablets & ,most importantly, the Vita without having to be a licensed developer and have to purchase the dev kits required for that.

Getting apps on the Vita will definitely be a boon to the system.

"It's a beta launch, so PS Mobile hasn't benefited from Sony's marketing machine just yet. I expect that once more handset manufacturers are onboard and integration with PSN is included, there will be a considerable push to get the message across."

I sure hope so, otherwise this platform is dead.

It won't get much better until they announce PS3 support.

Sucks for those with touch-only games.

It would be great to add PS3 support like Minis because it would open the games for the devs to get a way bigger userbase, but I wonder how would they handle the touchscreen stuff ¿using Move as 2D pointer? Right analog as 2D pointer and R3 as touch?

But to add PSN trophies and on-line leaderboards will be awesome. To add on-line multiplayer would be too expensive for these low budget projects btw.

I see this more as a help for smaller indie developers due to really small costs. Compared to Minis, looks like that PSM doesn't need ESRB, PEGI and similars (which cost several thousands of bucks btw). I wonder if Sony's cut of the game revenue is 30% like in Facebook or Apple. Because right now the userbase of PSM is small when compared to FB/iOS/Android, but in some years can be great specially if they add PS3/PS4 support soon.

That wouldn't work, because then games wouldn't be able to use right analogue stick.

And yeah they've said they're working on adding PSN integration

At this stage, I think getting certification for a wider range of Android devices (from a wider range of manufacturers) would actually be more beneficial for PS Mobile than getting the games running on PS3 (although that would help, too). They should concentrate on getting PS Mobile available on Kindle Fire, Nook Tablet, Nexus 7, and all of the top Android phones (especially getting Samsung on board).

As an aside, I also think it would be a good idea for Sony to devise an official application for Android that would enable syncing a Dual Shock 3 to use as a wireless game controller.

ep they need to get this on most of the Android devices such as my Droid Razer M. Then they need to spend some money actively promoting it and putting it in the public's awareness.

I think getting this on a Nexus or Kindle Fire is pretty much out of the question as Google and Amazon would see it as competition against the Play Store and Amazon App Store respectively.

They do need to get Samsung's support though as their phones are the top selling Android phones.

Getting PS Mobile on a Nexus device shouldn't be difficult at all. I've got a Nexus 7, and the Amazon MP3 and Kindle apps are readily available on the Google Play store, even though they would compete with Google's own music and book downloads.

Getting it on the Kindle Fire line might be a little more difficult, since these products aren't quite as "open" as most other Android devices. I don't think it's an impossible task, though. Although Amazon would prefer that you buy movies and TV shows from their own marketplace, they do support other services like Netflix and Hulu. One major reason for that is because those services are so ubiquitous now, that if the Kindle Fire didn't support them, then people would wonder "What's wrong?" and the Kindle Fire would be viewed as an inferior product. Likewise, if Sony can manage to get PS Mobile established on other popular Android devices, then Amazon might embrace them for the reason that they wouldn't want people to feel that their product is lacking.

If Sony can play their cards right, then PS Mobile can become a big deal. They need to build it up quickly, and make an effort gain credibility with hardcore gamers by having a competitive marketplace with an emphasis on features not found on (most) standard Android devices, such as PSN connectivity and physical controls. They've already struck a deal with Wikipad, but should continue on that path and pursue deals with any and every Android product that has any kind of gaming slant, such as this device from Archos.

Negotiating such deals can spark a domino effect with gamers who are shopping for Android devices, as they may gravitate towards such gaming oriented machines. Those who embrace PS Mobile early might reap the rewards. If PS Mobile is present on all of the hottest gaming phones and tablets, then it can reach a point where hardware manufacturers will approach Sony to ask (read: beg, plead) for PS Mobile support, rather than it being the other way around.

One other thing that I just thought of while writing the above: it could be highly beneficial to roll out trophy support as quickly as possible. If trophies were available, then staunch PlayStation fans might be happy to purchase a few games to pad their trophy collections...which leads to increased interest in PS Vita or other PS Mobile certified devices...which leads to even more PS Mobile sales, and with it more hardware manufacturers wanting to get their products certified. After all, gamers can't gain trophies on "regular" Android games, so game developers will want to make their games available in the marketplace where trophies count.

Sony has several potential points of differentiation from other mobile game marketplaces. It's up to them to strike while the iron is hot.

The difference with Playstation Mobile, as far as I know, is that you need a rooted device to install it if the manufacturer didn't strike a deal with Sony. The reason for that extra requirement compared to the Amazon app store or other app stores is to support some extra anti-piracy tech that Sony developed.

Right, and this is why Sony needs to make deals with more hardware manufacturers to get more devices certified. Many people can't or won't root their devices...and even if they are willing to jump through those hoops, they'll still technically have an "unsupported" device, and risk being left to twist in the wind if something goes awry with an installation or a purchase.

Rock Boshers strikes me as ultra-niche.
ZooZooGo strikes me as ultra-casual.
Not fan of either extreme so I think I'll just pass on this week and go play some Virtue's Last Reward.
