PlayStation Mobile Thread of Indie Games, and Apps on Android/Vita

http://www.psnstores.com/2013/01/psm-quick-play-gun-commando/

I am not as high on the game as he is. Aiming with the sticks is a little loose do to the momentum they add. Boss fights, minus the last one, are non events. Level design is good, but it is easy to get lost (would like a mini-map).

I do think the gun level up mechanic instead of ammo is a great system.

Man, I really want to support that Dev; They've been pumping Vita games nonstop but none of their games actually seem fun to me. I was hoping this would be the one.

Cubixx will be the free game next week

Very nice. I bought Cubixx as a Minis release a while back, but didn't get the PS Mobile version because it seemed too similar to the previous Minis version. This will definitely be worth the download, so that I can at least benefit from higher resolution graphics.

A friend of mine has been working on a PSMobile game and it's almost ready to be submitted to Sony, so i thought i'd mention it here.

I'll just mention that i have no vested interest in this game whatsoever - i'm just mentioning a good looking game coming to PSM, like i would do with any other game :)

So this is "Nunnageddon", the game. It's an arcade style game. I'll let the man himself explain it

Nunnageddon is a PlayStation Mobile title created at the Norwich Indie Game Jam which took place in December. A frantic arcade shooter that gets players taking down enemies attacking from the skies and on the ground, Nunageddon has been designed to be pick up and play as well as utterly addictive. It has since been refined and polished and will be available for release on PS Vita soon.

Any questions, feel free to follow him on twitter - @DanielCake

I wonder why there are no apps available for PSM. Are they not accepting them yet or are people just not developing them? I figured at least a calculator would have been done by now.

I'd also assume the SDK is too restrictive for some kinds of apps, for example you can't write a PDF reader when your app is not allowed to open files it didn't create. Also I have no idea what kind of UI widgets are available.

I'll keep an eye out, looks like it might be similar to Super Crate Box?

You should tell him to make a trailer that would help people understand the game better. I noticed some PSM games don't even have that, personally I refuse to download even free games when the developer couldn't be bothered to make a trailer.

People aren't developing them. Japanese PSM got a 2ch reader app last week.

It's a fairly good game. Not FuturLab's best, but still very much worth playing. Pick it up, people!

Any idea what new PSM games are out this week, Kass?

No clue really. Thomas Hooper has 2 more in-queue, Still Life and Super Skull Smash Go! so maybe those?

how come there's still so few game releases per week, psm is out of beta right? the sdk is affordable to any indie/mobile developer now, is it really not attracting developer interest, or is it more about Sony's certification process slowing everything down with many more games stuck in queue?

it really felt like we're still in the controlled 'beta' phase.

I would have thought mobile developer will just port their mobile games just for the hell of it because it's not like it's expensive, and releasing early on platform where there's still not much competition like in android/ios space can't hurt.

when it was first announced, I was hoping for environment where you got at least 1 or 2 games released daily even, not weekly and only 2 games a week. :(

I think the main thing preventing it from growing is the few devices that support it.

that's the other thing I don't understand.

I don't get why it's not working on pretty much all device that are capable. I'm sure there are minimum spec requirement, but why for instance, can't you just install it on galaxy s3 for example, pretty sure the hardware can handle it, and I've seen there are tutorial to make psm work on non supported device.

does Sony need samsung permission to run psm on their device? I mean sure, they probably can't forced Samsung to wear the 'playstation certified' branding, but they should just make psm available in google playstore so that all device can try, or let you download apk and install it like amazon appstore

/\ You probably answered all of your own questions.

As for talk about games being worked on... GDC will be an interesting time...

Also at Indiecade East there will be a PSM game jam for a development contract and getting featured at GDC as well.

Well, it's based on Mono. I have no idea how popular it is, but I don't think it's like you can just port Android games to it. Unless they are already written in Mono. I think XNA is based on that, so in theory it should be easy to port Xbox Indie games from it, but apparently the 3d performance is really bad on the Vita.

Mono also apparently uses C#, while a lot of console programming (including the PSP) was C++ based. Probably the biggest Minis developer (in terms of numbers) was Beatshapers, but they program in C++. They apparently do have a PS Mobile title in the works, but presumably they have to hire a new coder, or at least get him up to speed on C#.

Beyond that, I'm just not sure what the point is except getting games on the Vita. I mean, Android devices already have access to stores with better selections than PS Mobile. So basically they are just selling to Vita owners, which isn't that many.

I mean, let's face it, if you have an Android tablet or phone, are you really going to buy something like Gun Commando over something like Shadowgun or Dead Trigger? (And conversely, there is no way those two games could be ported to PS Mobile)

So basically you have two types of people doing PSMobile - people who get a kick out of seeing their game on the Vita, and companies that can't really compete in the Android market and hope to eek out a living on PSMobile (like Ripstone and Green Hill).

On the flip side, I also don't think Sony is doing much promotion of it. For instance, Ouya just had a game development contest with $50,000 in prizes. Not a lot, but it got 150+ entries

Or maybe they are?

Mono is an open source implementation of the .net framework.
XNA is based on the .net framework (made by MS).
Playstation Mobile is based on Mono
monogame is an open source implementation of XNA but PSM is not based on that.

Aside fromt the .net/mono connection I don't think there is a PSM/monogame relationship so porting isn't as easy as you may think.

You can install it on any Android device but it requires rooting because of how it handles DRM. Sony can't officially recommend users do something like that.

I mean, it's JANUARY. Gotta give companies time to promote stuff. When were they supposed to do it, during the Christmas rush, or during dead ass January?

I think the bigger issue is Sony not promoting it. Service was been out since October and there still isn't a weekly post on the PlayStation Blog letting people know there are new games. It was just recently after months of complaining that they rotated the banners on the US storefront. And they still haven't updated the featured games. All are still original launch games. (It looks like they finally updated it tonight)

As of right now I think I run the only site that actually does this (with screens/info for all releases). S/O to the PSPMinis team too.

I don't think Google allows competing services in their Play store. And in any case, the whole point of the certification program is that Sony tests the hardware and ensures that all PSM games will work well on all certified devices. On regular Android, developers frequently encounter device specific bugs, and either have to limit themselves to the most popular devices or spend a lot of time and money trying to fix bugs on devices they don't have access to themselves.

Well, apparently Sony really is sponsoring game jams for Playstation Mobile.

Someone just uploaded a video of the winning game from the "2013 UWS Playstation Mobile jam". Upper West Side?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_aFZzXz3lU

I don't want to sound mean, but if that is the winner...yikes. I mean, it looks okay, but not something that would wow people (and as a game, seems very similar to a game called Fish Tank).

And maybe it's just the camera, but it looks like there is slowdown in the animation of the matches

Yikes indeed :/

I'm still sore that Sony renamed PS Suite to PS Mobile. It signals to me that they aren't planning on bringing it to PS4 which I think is a huge mistake. Another good Sony initiative with potential being wasted.

Sounds like a silly thing to get sore about, I don't think the name change had anything to do with not bringing it to the PS4 and everything to do with being a more marketable name. If this touchpad thingy has decent gameplay possibilities then PS mobile would be an obvious thing to support.

This week on PSM.

Blue Skies ($6.99)
Dead End Valentine ($1.79 — ¥175) <- Japanese text only

Aqua Kitty is free
Meltdown Moon is now in Canada, France, and Germany. There is a new version for the game as well (Good luck trying to patch it)

Aqua Kitty and Rebel

Another vote for Aqua Kitty.

Super Crate Box
Surge
Rebel
Just wanted to thank you guys for the recommendations! Had I known Aqua Kitty was a Defender clone, I would've jumped instantly. It's really charming thus far, though pretty simple. I hope to dig into a few others soon! SCB is awesome too, though I've had my fill of its punishment elsewhere.
Honestly, no. I've played a lot of these (since I write for a site that is reviewing them) and it's a pretty sorry lot. The ones mentioned so far are probably the best of the crop (along with Haunt the House), but I wouldn't call any of them must plays, either.
While I'm enjoying AK, I also don't think the service has that "standout" game just yet. It does have some stuff worth a look and I'm certainly interested to watch it develop, if it even does! beril's comments in the Gunman Clive thread make me think it might never really get off the ground, unfortunately.
Pinky Spots Leg Massage.
