I would also like to know this, my 80gb is full and I would like to play uncharted 3. I read somewhere that even if you fat32 an external drive they won't allow any files over 4gb, is this true?
If so what's the next best option?

Yeah but you just buy PSN cards on amazon.com, you get the code emailed to you and you can credit your US account even though you're not in the US.
i got paypal though, but again it's not using a US credit card

This summer is turning out to be very expensive for me. I already have to shell out for a new TV (fell asleep and fell into my current one, screen damage, not bad but...) and a second-hand 3DS, as well as possible house-moving costs (fuck the government).
So...what are my cheapest options for replacing my busted old OG PS3 besides eBay?

I think there is? I added UC3 to my cart and it started downloading like 6 different modules. Single Player, multiplayer, 2d movies, 3d movies, spanish language pack and french language pack.
I dont need to download all of this do I? 3D Movies and French/Spanish stuff seem unnecessary but who can tell.

i have an 80 GB HD too and in the same boat
interesting. im only interested in the single player. any idea how big that one was by itself?

Hey I haven't been able to find a definitive answer about this and can't make a topic myself to ask. Does anyone know if, without owning a PS3 or Vita, I can buy PS+ and horde games by "buying" them through the webstore at https://store.sonyentertainmentnetwork.com ?

Single player, multiplayer and the 2d and 3d movies all looked to be about 12GB a piece.
However there's no way to initiate JUST the SP download so you will need to clear space for the other stuff, only to pause and delete the other downloads.
Edit: I take that back the multiplayer is 4.8GB

80Gb PS3 owner here. After clearing off a bunch of HD space, I attempted to d/l UC3, but since I didn't have enough space it didn't work. Solution? Went back into my download list then:
Selected 2D Movies (13Gb) downloaded it and let it install.
Selected Single Player (12Gb) downloaded it and let it install.
Finally, I selected Multiplayer (4Gb) downloaded it and let it install.
(These are the three components needed to play UC3 Single Player, yes, even the multiplayer component must be installed.)
Had to download and install each item separately instead of choosing all of them and background installing since you need double the HD space when initially downloading an item. If you have over 58Gb of empty HD space you should be able to use background downloading and choose all three items.

Cool, thanks for the confirmation.
It took an hour, which seems OK for 7 GB over wifi.
Pretty sure you can just have an account and start adding things without having registered a console.
Let me propose a test: make your PSN account, don't add any hardware to it, and add a free item to your account from the PSN/SEN store. If you can add it that way, I'd be much more confident that what you're suggesting will still work when you have a PS+ account.
Moreover, I'm pretty sure people in this thread have been adding PSV games to their accounts even though they don't have PSV systems on their account.

Oh yes I can confirm it, I did that before getting my Vita, not having a PS3 either. I'm still doing it for PS3 games (I guess I'll get one eventually).
Downloading it right now and it's 12GB:| I guess you're counting irrelevant multiplayer.
Edit- Wait?! You need to download the garbage MP mode for UC3 to play SP? Ugh. Fucking Sony.

As much as I loved having a BC compatible unit, I would not get a refurb OG unit at this point. I actually went for that option once only to have it break down less than a year later. The replacement unit they sent me after that lasted less than two months, after which I just asked for the slim. I'm convinced all OG PS3s are destined to fail.

Isn't there some kind of rule that you have to have 1.5x the hard drive space free of the item you want to download?

Most have said you actually need double the space in order to successfully install. You'd need to clear out 80 GB in that case. I think you won't even be able to initiate the download unless you have enough free space for both the download file and install.
