Playstation Portal reviews

I just need to know if this portal provides any better experience with remote play than Steam deck. Not talking about comfort but literally the perceived lag/gameplay performance….. anyone know yet?

I think you can use WiFi / hotspot to play remote play on steam deck outside your house too right? I have an Oled steam deck that I’m getting and wondering if I need this portal as well

What a piece of crap this is. It does give Xbox fanboys something to make fun of Sony about. I'm happy for them in that regard.
more options are a good thing, this isn't a mandatory device for anyone.

We need to stop "making fun of" devices that are just accessories. If its not for you or you don't like it, don't use/buy it. The Kinect was an issue when they started forcing it on you.

Sony needs a solution to HDR, or lack thereof, on Portal while HDR on PS5 is turned on.

Colors are off if enabled and you have to first go to the PS5-menu to turn it off, as the screen settings aren't accessible during Remote Play.

Minor annoyance.

So you gotta disable HDR on the actual PS5 before using it? Cant turn it off via portal?

Wish they included an HDR screen.

Managed to order one directly from Sony.

Dad- and handheldgamer here, so will be mostly playing it on the couch, in bed or during work.

Looking forward to grinding loot in The Division and Demon’s Souls, replaying The Witcher 3 and experiencing Persona 3 Portable the way it’s meant to be played without waiting for the Switch version.

Yeah, mentioned it a couple of days ago, you basically have to turn off HDR from each game's options every time.

Imagine being so miserable over a plastic toy, c'mon man

Via Portal.
it's a minor inconvenience but an inconvenience nonetheless, it's boggles the mind how Sony didn't think of it ffs, then again, we are talking about a Company that introduced VRR and ALLM to their next gen console 1 year after its release...

In terms of lag i think it *feels* a bit smoother. But that also might be a placebo effect. But i do encounter less hitches for sure. But the biggest difference is the screen. 800p (with black borders, so even less actual screen) or full 1080p is a huge difference.

Initially, I was led to believe that this would only work on the same local network as the PS5. Now that we know there isn't a geographical location limitation, i am much warmer to the portal. I still feel they should have went with a premium display, but maybe having a dedicated streaming device isn't so bad. Especially if you don't already own a Razer Kishi or backbone.

I disabled HDR on the PS5 - can't say I see much difference in Spiderman on the Portal but my eyes are shit.

I hear that you can't log in through the internet, only local play, if true that perplex me more than anything on that device, I mean, I can play Persona 5 on my Cellphone using 5G on my lunch break at work, but in this 200US$ device who's the sole purpose is to stream games from the PS5 I can't, why?

You can play on any good enough connection, the only issue being public wifi that redirects you to a web page for authentication on account of the portal not having a browser.

Make sure your PS5 is connected to router via Ethernet.

To me it's a more seemless experience and less hiccups. Less screen tearing, and screen flickering, less dips in quality than when I use Chaiki on Steam Deck. I've only had it for 2 hours, but I'm loving it so far. Cant't wait to try it out more and try it on the go with my phone's hotspot this weekend. So far it's definitely worth it for me.

People are DESPERATE for it to fail and be shit, it’s actually a brilliant little device been doing the weekly’s on GT7 in between work etc beautiful
People are not looking at the bigger picture. Its actually a genius device and a gateway into PlayStation's cloud gaming at only $200 so the casuals and hardcore will pick it up.

They're pushing a cloud device into the market onto their huge base and trying to put it in as many hands as possible.

They will have this cloud device introduced to their casual base before Microsoft even makes Xcloud a big thing and this device is the future of their portable so thats their answer to Nintendo, and Steams portable devices.

That was me, if I see an open box for cheap during the return window ill be doing the ole switcharoo
So chatted with a friend from Best Buy and he said they were having quite a few returned and once they made sure they were working they were putting them on the website for pickup only and as of now priced at $189

Its likely hard to catch one though I did see the site tell me unavailable nearby and as of now not worth the hassle for $10 off though someone looking to grab their first one might get lucky

Definitely not for $10. I've seen stuff like the Dualsense Edge get hefty discounts ($50 or so) on amazon warehouse deals so that's what I'm banking on with the current return on mine until January 11

At $330 AUD, it’s a hard pass. Glad sone people are enjoying it but from what I’ve seen it seems to suffer the same faults as other devices that can be streamed to with fewer options. I’d just extend my budget $100 and buy a new iPad if I wanted to stream PS5 games, a lot better bang for buck in my region

I wasn't clear enough, you can't use it at all on public wifi since the portal doesn't have a web browser (at least for now). Regular wifi works just fine though.
Not all public wifi uses a browser portal, but still, the public wifi i've tried in the past with remote play worked worse than just using my phone as a hot spot.
It's definitely best at your own wifi or someone you know's wifi. I'm bringing mine to another state, but it'll be on my sister's wifi.

PSA:
Set PS5 video output to 60HZ!!!

Not a bullet point in the OP.

I'm sure it's been said here already, but it's a pretty crucial bit of information for not having a laggy shitfest on/in your hands!

Reddit/Twitter/etc. is currently littered with Luddites that haven't figured this out/actually read the set up guide.
Smart shoppers will keep a close eye on Facebook marketplace and the like after Christmas due to the potential droves of dummies that don't figure this out and ditch their gifted Portals on the cheap;}

So you have to set your PS5 to 60hz every time you want to play on the Portal and then switch it back to 120hz after you're done?

What kind of garbage is that?

I ordered from Gamestop on the 15th (yesterday around midnight) when they put some up for reserve/ sell. I just received the email stating it is shipping and should be here Sunday. Might want to check your email if you ordered from them.

Guys help me out here.

Why is my portal asking for area and HDR tv settings everytime I turn off the TV and leave the PS5 on?

If the TV is on Portal goes straight into my console menu no ossues, if TV is off it starts asking for TV settings (area and HDR).
