If they would at least explain why it is like this... Do they find that they get additional sales of back catalog stuff from people opening the store to see if it has been updated yet, and then buying something old when it isn't?

Probably works out well for them. They probably see an increase in Plus memberships. And people talk about it for 2 weeks instead of just one. The game gets extra advertising on PSN thanks to being on PS+. Lots of reasons why they will carry on doing it.
Even if they didn't give you it a week early, that doesn't automatically mean they'd give you a discount on it instead.
Yeah its a strange thing. The only pro: i can pimp it out on message boards like these. That's more ore less free adds for the game.
the standart customer doesn't give a shiit about that kind of stuff. He doesn't want' it earlier. He want's it cheaper or free.

I would only preorder digital games if A) there was a discount, or B) if preloading was enabled.

Edit: All-stars beta is up but dead rising 2 nor raccoon city is discounted. And It wont even let me access Sega rally.
