PlayStation4 FW 1.5 details

Play as you download
This feature enables users to play supported digital titles as they are being downloaded. The time it takes to begin playing will vary depending on game data size and network environments, and not all titles will support this feature When a game is purchased, users can start playing after PS4 downloads a portion of the data, while the rest of the game is downloaded in the background during actual gameplay. Games may be downloaded in stand-by mode.
I hope this work with: Ghost, BF4 and NBA2K14

how is it that sleep and resume aint there, it should be day 1 or shud be coming very soon cause this was advertised day 1.

Anyways i am happy and wanted a day 1 patch, so we can test how updates works and all that. Also i hope we get another patch to test back ground patching

Man you're right, I never read about that here....mostly because it was being yelled from the rooftops

Even my WiiU patched when I first installed it

Yea, and that was at least 25-30 minutes. A day one patch is not a big deal at all. This is already sounding like a much better launch than PS3.

Updated firmware is, or at least was an issue, on the PS3 as well. My cousin bought a movie on BD, popped it in his PS3, and was told it required a FW update to play. He ended up hauling his PS3 over to my house to be updated, but it only ever happened that once.

I'm not sure if this affects standalone BD players as well, since I've never owned one.

Yeah it did. During the early days of blu-ray quite a few mandatory firmware changes took place across players. Couldn't he update via USB though?

lack of suspend/resume smells a bit like a late-game bug.

like that RGB overlay one that got them at PS3 launch for in-game XMB.. hopefully not as bad as that...

edit - I do wonder if, like the WMV "activation" on PS3, the reason for online registration of blu-ray playing has something to do with per-user licensing costs, rather than per-console (i.e. some PS4s will never be used for BD playing; maybe Sony avoids royalty fees on unregistered consoles that never request the feature? justa guess)

edit2 - how funny is it that Wario64 has the first ever PS4 firmware thread here 3 weeks from fucking launch.. talk about a fast poster

I love how people are trying to make a big out of Sony continually working on the firmware until the system is launched. This is exactly what you WANT them to do, keep working it and refining everything so it runs great upon launch...

"Some features will not be available at launch, such as “suspend/resume mode” which is a feature that keeps the PS4 system in a low power state and promptly takes users back to their game."

Noooooooooooo!

Meh, I'm not getting one at launch anyway

And here comes a wave of bad PS4 news.

Pretty disappointing to hear. Hopefully none of the promised features end up not coming at all, like party chat with the PS3.

Gonna hold off a year or two until I touch any next-generation console.

You might want to hold off 5, just in case.

So the consoles they started manufacturing in July don't have the OS they finished in September/October and still continue to work on?

Really though, not sure how day 1 hardware updates are such a surprise around here. Granted though, no suspend/resume at launch is pretty weak.

Remember that manufacturing started in July so the RTM firmware is probably just "functional" in a sense that the console will turn on and be able to connect to a network and download the latest firmware update from Sony's servers.

Doing it this way gives the OS development team three months of extra time to polish and add features before certifying it in early November.

It's sad that people are missing this point. With the amount of stuff that these systems can do at launch, I'd much rather have a polished and function OS at launch wtih a day one patch instead of whatever they had when the system went to when it was produced or having the system delayed specifcally because they had to wait for the OS team to opitimize their code and tweak the UI.

My guess is that a lot of these functions were in a workable state when production began but wanted to leave them out of the launch consoles because they were either still buggy and/or not up to quality standards Sony set for themselves regarding the UI.

Game discs have firmware on them.

I doubt any games will have THIS firmware on though. Since they'll be working on it right up until a launch where every launch game should be Gold by now.

And I can't wait for the list of day 1 patches for all the games on both machines too.

I just hope we can export our videos to edit on our computers. Or has this been discussed?

Been mentioned afew times that Devs definitely can, and I think someone said it should be in the consumer FW but they weren't 100%.

So nobody is discussing how Sony already has basic UI navigation through voice using the PS Camera and that it also works without the camera using a headset unlike the competition?

I'm not impressed by that. If I'm using a headset, it means I'm holding the controller. If I'm holding the controller, I'm holding something quite capable of doing basic UI navigation. Why MS hasn't added it to theirs is no surprise - they want you to buy Kinect.

I doubt any games will have THIS firmware on though. Since they'll be working on it right up until a launch where every launch game should be Gold by now.

Exactly. The firmware will be coming in hot on release day. Discs are already being pressed. No firmware updates at launch on disc is my bet.

I wasn't. They removed it and I respect that.

It still has little to do with Sony not clarifying on this.

I can live with the music thing if I can add my own beats to it. If not then I won't be using custom music much on PS4 since I have a ton of paid content already but on through Music Unlimited.

The suspend/resume thing is not something I am losing sleep over as long as it comes.

Background music player
Users can enjoy gameplay while listening to music in the background with Music Unlimited, a cloud-based digital music service. Users can also voice chat with friends while listening to music. Learn more about Music Unlimited here.

Does this mean, we can only use Music Unlimited, and not music that we have copied over to the PS4?

They should have numbered this update 1.0. The one that comes on the box should be 0.5 or something.

Pre-order c...

people need to chill out. they're specifically stating that music unlimited background listening will be enabled with the patch, since it's actually a feature some people want. it's available on vita too. they aren't going to let you listen to your own music on vita and not on ps4. it looks like they're saying it's a feature added to the background music player, not that music unlimited is the only background music player.

Most of that stuff is basic features that you would expect to be there from the start. You seriously can't watch DVD or Blu-Ray movies without first downloading a firmware update? No suspend/resume is a huge disappointment too.

Kinda shows how rushed these consoles are. Three weeks from launch and we're learning about all these "gotchas"

A patch is a "gotcha"? Really now? No suspend/resume sucks, but wow some of you must be on 56k or something.

Only problem might be Sonys server...

Facebook video and images are dog shit. Actually, that's an insult to dog shit.

They have terrible compression.

Well, you could take archived Twitch footage and upload it to YouTube. Quality would depend mainly on the bitrate and encoding settings the PS4 uses to stream, though.

Well the PS4 is losing sleep mode over it.

/bad joke

I hope that 1.5 is pre install on later launch country.
Other than suspend/resume, everything seems quite good, plus voice command day 1, bitter sweet?

Something as simple as Blu Ray and DVD playback isn't possible without a fucking day one patch? Come on Sony. Let's hope firmware updates are on game discs too. I really hope the servers don't shit the bed on launch day.

I'm guessing they started manufacturing the PS4 REALLY early. So early, in fact, that even basic functions of the OS weren't finalized. Sure, Sony will meet demand and have a shit load of consoles available, but at the cost of potentially creating a massive clusterfuck when everyone is trying to download a 300 mb patch all at once.

God damnit :/

Then what on Earth was included in the 1.0 firmware?

I guess it's possible they're referring to online based features as being part of the update? (As you need to be on the latest software to access PSN and thus use them). Otherwise, I have no idea what the base feature set is...

I doubt Microsoft will ever give a list for the day one patch, because they've already said it's got to happen to even use the console.

But of course they're doing the exact same thing as Sony. These OS's are being finished right now, so there is no way they could be included with hardware that was manufactured a couple months ago.

It's sad that people are missing this point. We are not missing the point. We just don't want this launch delayed because the basic OS on the system wasn't filled with enough features for your tastes. This is the age of firmware updates and the system comes with just basic offline gaming functionality out the box and you download a patch and you're done to get the rest of those features.

To force them to hold off starting their console production until the 1.5 features can be included in the firmware is unrealistic when they're facing off against a competitor that is willing to rush to market so quickly that their console won't even function offline without a patch 5x the size.
