The use as a aphrodisiac has been debunked

Interesting how easily the myth propogated in the internet

Huh. Getting differing views from seemingly reputable sources but color me skeptical now.

I shall therefor update my precious statement:

Fuck these douchebags and fuck the douchebags who drink this shit to try to cure their hangovers. I hope their fucking hangover lasts forever.

There's a special place in Hell for poachers. Scum of the Earth.

Rhino horn is just keratin, you may as well eat your fingernails for all the good it will do.

How soulless and far gone as a person do you have to be to buy this horn knowing it came from one of the last White Rhinos on earth? Buying this shit should carry a life sentence, but justice will never be served and it'll be sold to some wealthy chinese businessman in a secret black market for the rich. Fuck traditional medicine.

What's even sadder is that the horn is just made (slightly differently folded) keratin, which is the same stuff hair and nails are made from. It has no useful properties whatsoever, you could better ground up your own nail clippings and sell them as rhino horn.

Wasn't there a plan to 3d print a bunch of horns from keratin to flood the market and make the horn worthless? er something?

No I'm pretty sure cutting it off might be painful - isn't it like an elongated tooth? There's likely nerve endings going into it, much like your own tooth.

The horns are like hair or fingernails. They don't have any nerves. They also grow back over time.

Zoos could cut the horns off pretty easily during an examination where the rhino to sedated.

I hope these people get caught and trampled to death by the other rhinos. Fuck them. Fuck the poachers, fuck the governments for not doing more to dissuade this, fuck the ignorant folks who buy into all this backwards shit, fuck nations who support this shit, and fuck hunters who go to places like Africa and do this shit.

Mankind is the 6th Extinction event and it's atrocious. Even only the hunters would just use their guns and blow their own fucking brains out.

Edit: hopefully zoos post arm guards who shoot pieces of shit like this on site now. Same with wild life preserves.

A mod might want to edit the thread title. Check the article, the zoo isn't in Paris.
That seems to confuse some people.

How does a zoo let this happen? Where is the security?

THIS. IS. EUROPE.

Property is basically sacred without having to fight over it. Having to use security at all is 'an American thing' here. Or at least it was. It's going to be sad when we have to hire more security people than simpler jobs. That's going to feed into immigration fears too, no doubt.

Should pull the nails off poachers, and of those that pay for this bullshit.

Scum.

More info : the rhinos are inside at night, in separate boxes.
Poachers opened the external fence, then 2 others doors to access the box. Security cameras don't monitor this part of the park, they hope to found some usable footage.

Yeah, it feels surreal to require security to protect animals in a friggin zoo. Sad that it has to come to it.

You are saying there is no security for private businesses? That doesn't sound right based on my own experiences. The Musee d'Orsay comes to mind as a place with heavy security.

Hm here's a counterargument to that: http://www.awf.org/blog/elephants-tears

They are pretty much teeth, and it's likely painful to cut them off.

This differs likely from the rhino horn, although even then it's got to be cut in a certain way: https://www.savetherhino.org/rhino_info/issues_for_debate/de-horning

WTF, breaking into a zoo? Hope they catch those fuckers.

I also hope they change security measures to have cameras monitor all over the place near them.

WTF? Aren't white rhinos highly endangered too?

The white rhinoceros consists of two subspecies: the southern white rhinoceros, with an estimated 19,682–21,077 wild-living animals in the year 2015,[3] and the much rarer northern white rhinoceros. The northern subspecies had very few remaining, with only three confirmed individuals left in 2015 (two females Fatu, 15 and Najin, 25 and one male Sudan, 42), all in captivity.[4]

High security in museums is a recent thing because of the terror attacks. And there are paintings worth millions in there, so anti-theft measures are common and understandable. I've never heard of high security measures protecting animals in a zoo though, especially one like Thoiry where it's just animals roaming in a park.

That's an odd example to use considering how many extremely valuable and movable objects as well as tourists are inside

Disgusting

Sad that people don't have this attitude towards rhino poaching in Africa

350 killed a year by poachers, and only 6000 or so remain in the wild

We are moving towards extinction at a rapid pace

The South African government is looking to legalize the farming of rino horn to try slow the illegal trade

What in the actual fuck?!?

Who is buying this shit? Cruella De Vil?

China mostly

Fair enough, seems like adjustments will have to be made.

Fuck these pieces of shit that hurt animals. The Rhino Rescue Project has a method to mess with the horn to discolour it from the inside of the horn and make it poisonous to humans while not affecting the rhinos. Apparently it cost about 20k per rhino but should be done to all of them inside zoo's to stop these assholes

Why a fucking horn is worth so much in the world baffles me. Shits your finger nails dawg keep your nail clipping. Fucking scum man.

It's a despicable act .. but I found it absurdly amusing that they were willing to break into a zoo for the sake of the horn.

Fucking scum bags, i hope they get whats coming to them. Put them in that pen with the other rhinos and let them fuck them up for a change

Really? That's pretty impressive.

I don't know about on sight in most places but my friend is a ranger in South Africa, it's mostly because the poachers try to kill rangers as well. The rangers don't shoot on sight (they give warnings), the goal is to arrest them, but they will kill a poacher if the situation comes to that. There are a lot of ex-military from all around the world that are involved in these anti-poaching units but they also train new people as well.

In South Africa right now it's a mix of the army (or was, not sure if still is) and private security firms that specialise in this area.

The rangers have helicopters and everything too.

Poaching is organised crime in the end in places like South Africa, people that get involved in it do so like other organised crime.
