Point & Click adventures in 2012. Best so far, the kickstarters and the future.

It was short but for 2.49 it's not a bad deal. I thought it was about average, the game felt like wasted potential.

There is no voice acting btw

How are the Ankh games?

I really wish the Secret file games were in a bundle.

Bumpin just to ask the same thing; are the Ankh games good?
edit: Oh and the same for Jolly Rover, Emerald City Confidential and The Dark Eye: are they good too?
...and are the King and Space Quest worth getting if only to experience the early PnC games?

I remember playing the first Ankh years ago, played maybe for 2 hours total... It wasn't bad, actually somewhat entertaining but far from a MUST HAVE in this genre.

Now of course, this impression is only half complete since i didn't play for long and someone else might give you a more detailed description of his experience but for now? My recommendation is go for the classic (and other critically acclaimed adventures) games first since there are PLENTY out there and i can't imagine you have played all of those yet!

Sorry about this bump, but I would like impressions on the following games that are on sale on Steam:
Ankh
Jolly Rover
Emerald City Confidential
The Dark Eye
^_^;

I can help you again on Emerald City Conf. i own it, played about a good third of the game i estimate then got sidetracked ...

It is pretty competent, nice music, i liked the artstyle and the characters are pretty well written and kind of endearing, the main Character Petra comes across as likeable and has a good sense of humor. I'd say it's worth getting, again IF you do not have other superior adventure games to buy and play! i'd probably rate it a 7.4/10 if i had to assign a number to it ;)

I want impressions on Lost Horizon myself guys!!

- Anyone got it? Do you recommend it?

- How often does it go on sale? Are the 50% as good as it probably gets or has it been seen at 75% already before this sale?

Just finished The Next BIG Thing (and The Walking Dead, but I don't think that's a "pure" adventure game)

Overall I really like TNBT. It's my first Pendulo adventure game and it convinced me to buy their pack on the Steam sale. Not too many shitty puzzles and I liked the world/characters.

I got it on the Christmas sale and loved it. If you like Indiana Jones/Uncharted-esque adventures you'll really like this. It starts off a bit slow but when it gets going it's really impressive - the final chapter is especially cool, I thought. Gorgeous art style, as well. Not sure how much I got it for, but for its current price I'd say it's worth it.

Thanks for the impressions, i will get it for SURE now... though i guess i will wait till the winter sale as i know i won't get around to playing it till then anyway :( TOO MANY GAMES, stop making me interested in checking out Next Big Thing as well now damn you :p

I know your pain, don't worry...

LOL yup that looks a lot like my own wishlist... not to turn this into a dick measuring contest (because personally i feel it's pretty sad that i own that many games without having the time to play them) but i bet my overall Steam list is still bigger than yours :( it's like ONE GENRE of games (like adventure games) would be more than enough to last me a lifetime...

Just thinking about what 2013 will bring makes me squeal with joy. It's going to be a huge year for adventure gamers. I'm far behind enough as it is on current releases.

(late 2012)
Primordia
Book of Unwritten Tales: The Critter Chronicles
The Rabbit's Apprentice

(2013)
Bracken Tor: The Time of Tooth and Claw
Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs
Beyond: Two Souls
The Last Crown: Haunting of Hallowed Isle
Double Fine Adventure
Mystery Game X (Jane Jensen)
Moebius
Tex Murphy: Project Fedora
Broken Sword 5
Two Guys Spaceventure
Leisure Suit Larry remake
Hero-U: Rogue to Redemption
Quest for Infamy
Jack Houston and the Necronauts
Routine
Contrast
Shadowgate

Wow.

I don't know if you want to include Until Dawn on that list as it seems like a hard game to pin down, but you've got Beyond on there so I guess it's eligible. Seems to be a mix of the interactive movie genre and survival-horror, with a similar system to Heavy Rain where any character you control out of the ensemble can die and stay dead, impacting the rest of the narrative as a result.

Dreamfall Chapters has materialised into a 'thing' now too, but there's no chance of that coming out next year.

Dreamfall chapters really?

So i take it their MMO has failed then right? Since they wanted to focus on that... Would be awesome if there were an actual sequel though i still have to actually play Dreamfall proper lol i finished the Longest Journey though which i loved!!

Dreamfall Chapters (which will not be episodic, in spite of the title) will actually be developed by a new company headed by Ragnar Tornquist, and not by Funcom.

I enjoyed Syberia 1 for a while, then got lost and frustrated so i quit for good :( come to think of it i LOVE everything about adventure games except for hard/unintuitive (read: i might be too stupid for them) puzzles...

Jane Jensen's Mystery Game X sure is a curious one, she said in Pinkerton Road video the publisher was going to ship it December 2012, they are leaving it hell of a late.
It's got to be Gabriel Knight.....

I don't see how it can be GK without there being a huge buildup - after all, that'd be quite the comeback - but the hints do seem to hint that it's a possibility, so I simply don't know.

What makes you think it won't go to 75% in the Winter sale?

Oh it may well do, I forgot to say cheapest it will get at the moment.

It would be a 9% difference though which isn't that much.
Makes it (in GBP) £5.43 at 66%/ £3.99 at 75%, £1.44 saving if I wait until December.

I will be adding it to the backlog tonight, oh dear.
Actually I have been wanting to give this a go for a while, I may fast track it to top of my play list.

Sure it will go 75% and the sequel may even have some discount too by that time.

Would be great if it was but I agree about the build up, always imagine a return to Gabriel Knight would have a major fanfare behind it.
What is this mystery game x???

There was an update to the MGX thing:

The game will launch in early 2013 in order to avoid other holiday releases. It is an episodic game and the publisher feels that they will gain extra sales if they start the press tour the instant the first episode is released. They expect a larger than usual bump in sales if readers are able to click from the announcement article right into a purchase screen.

Interesting way of doing it. Click announcement article then buy Ep 1 same day.
Will see how it goes, I thought it was still on for December but cheers for the update epmode.

About Sierra's Quest series
They are currently on sale on Steam, but I am hesitant to get them; on the one hand they're out-dated ness may not make me feel like progressing through the early games, but on the other I want to experience this classics that are among the founding series of PnC games.

Bought The Dream Machine and Deponia in the sale. Loving Dream Machine so far.

You should at least try them. You can always use a walkthrough for help.
They haven't aged anywhere near as well as the Lucasarts games but they're still worth experiencing (especially the Space Quest games, I've always preferred them to King's Quest; maybe that's nostalgia speaking).

I highly recommend checking out the Space Quest games at the very least. They may not be as accessible as Lucasarts adventures in terms of design and challenge, but I bet they will provide you with a greater sense of adventure and sheer thrill. The ingenious and often hilarious ways of dying (which isn't a problem if you save regularly), larger scale (explore the galaxy), and episodic storytelling combine to make this series feel more "epic" to me than any of its Lucasarts cousins.

And don't get me wrong, I love Lucasarts adventures. Day of the Tentacle is my favorite videogame of all time.

Anyway, if you do play them I would recommend starting with Sierra's Space Quest I VGA remake. Space Quest III is probably the best text-based one, although I love II as well.

IV is probably the best all-around; great story, brilliant time travel humor, and prettiest-looking to boot. V is as close to a Star Trek spoof as Space Quest ever got, and is also quite good.

The sixth game isn't bad, but not quite worthy of the series' name.

thanks for the feedback guys, guess I'll get Space Quest for now (if it goes on sale, otherwise I'll get it during December, again Steam burned a big hole...)
EDIT: Oh and any more impressions for the Ankh series please?

Wow.

I wouldn't call survival horror stuff like Amnesia or Routine "adventure games", and Hero-U seems to skew more RPG, but even if we just look at the pure adventures, it's pretty staggering. Kickstarter didn't just bring back a great franchise or two, it's resurrected a whole genre for a year.

Hopefully a few of these games are successful enough that publishers take notice and start backing adventures made by the right people again.

Honestly, right now i feel like things could go on like this forever, meaning we don't even NEED big publishers etc. to pick up on the adventure genre again.

Let them have and exploit their Call of Duties, Mass Effects etc. and the true hardcore point and click adventure fans of yesteryear can play and enjoy literally dozens of awesome indie adventures that just seem to keep sprouting out all over the place these days.

I'm loving this, since these games roughly feel just LIKE that golden age of adventures we used to partake in so many years ago in terms of production values and overall feel.

Speaking of Sierra adventure games, I've always loved the Quest for Glory series. They're pretty unique in that they're also part RPG. The puzzles often have multiple solutions based on your class. The usual Sierra quirks are either nonexistent or less prevalent than in their other games.

Space Quest is ace as well but you'll be dealing with more awful puzzle nonsense and a few cases where you could end up with a broken game by missing something early on. I won't look down on you for using a guide!

I don't know, I love all of these new adventure games but very few of them are written well enough to compare to the old games. I blame this mostly on localization issues since a lot of the new stuff is coming from Germany.

Newish games I've played with decent writing: The Ben and Dan series, most Wadjet Eye releases, Grey Matter, The Dream Machine. I haven't played Cognition or The Journey Down yet!

Wow, Syberia 3 is going to be made?! Not sure where the story can go after 2 but i loved both Syberia adventures. Great to see Sokal is returning to making adventures after White Birds folded. His art is amazing.

I really hope they keep 2D backgrounds and have the same artist. The art behind them felt so surreal, it was so memorable to me.

Yeah, I'm not sure what they can do with the story either, but as long as it's something in the same vein, I am more than happy.

Primordia went up for preorder on GoG. You get a demo that you can download/play for preordering. I won't be able to check the demo out until I get home from work in 5 hours though :(
