Pokémon Community Thread 4: "Your Portal to What's Hip and Happening in Sinnoh!"

Transporter update fixed the 10/x/10/10 DV shiny problem, no idea if it added GS functionality. I would assume it would seeing as even base SM can recognize Pokemon as being from GS VC.

At least Red Gyarados will be a Red Gyarados now.

Man, I really want to make a thread title "Give me 20 million reasons why the next Pokémon game should be like BotW".

There are some people who believe that's some kind of solution. Game Freak doesn't need any of that. It's fine for people to want certain things, but don't act like it's what it needs to be.

Honestly? Do it.

I mean that would be sick, but it also wouldn't be a normal new pokemon game. I'm not sure how well that would play as a mainline replacement.

I have a wish list of big changes though, my biggest being trainers and gym leader battles have to be even. So if the gym leader has three pokemon, then I cant use 6.

The whole reason for having a full party is built around the idea that people either arent powerful enough (never the case), need to heal becase they dont have enough poitions (also false), or need to get status/pp restored (everyone goes back to the pokécenter before a gym fight).

So either they cut potions from gyms, and require you succeed or fail and restart like the pokémon league, or we drop the whole charade and put a healer in each gym. Then each battle in the gym has even pokémon entered. Making strategy much more interesting.

The people who want that haven't played Pokemon since RBY, so there's no use in appealing to them.

Thinking about restarting Pokemon Sun because I have the urge to revisit it and see if I like it more, but I don't wanna burn myself out if USUM ends up being too similar.

Once I caught Tapu Koko I quit playing and haven't touched it since.

If I do play I'll probably go with older Pokemon so I can save the Gen VII Pokemon I want to use for USUM, bar making Popplio as my Starter since I wanna use Rowlet for USUM and did Litten in my first run.

I wouldn't, really. SM's completely linear story path, un-hidable map markers and lengthy slow paced cutscenes absolutely kill the game's replay value.

I enjoyed the plot the first time, but it dragged immensly on the second play through.

The totem trials aren't as good on the second time either since their cool little micro-strategy often rely on an element of surprise for the challenge.

No, it's from I Choose You.

Some trivia segment on some variety show in Japan, for some reason they made Marina from Bye Bye Psyduck and Tierno Kanto Trainers.

Kind of weird choices though...

Bulbasaur's Trainer is a random COTD who specifically specialized in Water-type Pokemon, and Charmander's is a guy who in the show had Squirtle.

I would've gone with the girl from "Make Room For Gloom" for Bulbasaur since she was a Grass-type specialist, and have Damien be the one to receive Charmander to tie into him having one---and be sort of a "redemption" for him, since IIRC it's that new Cross guy in the film who abandons Charmander.

Just don't use a full team and use the same number of Pokémon that the Gym Leaders use that's what I do, with the exception if they use 2 Pokémon then I use three as they tend to happen during the early part of the game and my Pokémon are weak and derpy so they need all the help they can get.

Honestly I don't see why the game needs to force players to use only three Pokémon, they tend to save that for the post game.

The whole reason for having a full party is built around the idea that people either arent powerful enough (never the case), need to heal becase they dont have enough poitions (also false), or need to get status/pp restored (everyone goes back to the pokécenter before a gym fight).

Again just don't use potions during battles, furthermore they keep that stuff for post game. Also Gym Battle are meant to be a test of the trainers battling skills to see if they have the skills to challenge the Elite 4, your method just sound unnecessary hard for no good reason which would challenge the younger players.

The people who want that haven't played Pokemon since RBY, so there's no use in appealing to them.

Which is ironic since the gen 1 games was not as freeing as Breath of the Mild and were horribly unbalanced if the player didn't follow the set path.

The totem trials aren't as good on the second time either since their cool little micro-strategy often rely on an element of surprise for the challenge.

Totem Trials weren't good the first time round as it was pretty easy to win if you just targeted the Totem Pokémon which is ironic as Game Freak made step to make it artificially difficult.

Apparently in the new film, these are the other Kanto Trainers in the MO20 timeline...

Why do they keep giving Charizard to characters that I don't like?

They better stop it as Charizard is too cool for those dweebs. >:|

Honestly, reverting back to B2W2/Platinum/Emerald levels of openness is all I want. The high points in Sun and Moon are the high points that other games had as well, and to me that's the town-to-town exploration or getting to a new area for the first time. It just so happens that Sun and Moon don't have as many of those moments it feels like.

BW2 wasn't open at all. The game rushed you from town to town in a set path.

Doesn't matter to them. They just want the illusion of freedom rather than a decent game.

The game was still guided, but there were a ton of areas to explore because it was in addition to what BW already had.

I included B2W2 because it really doesn't matter to me how linear the story is if there's stuff to explore anyway.

Yeah, BW2 had a lot of little places to explore at the end and I felt wasn't as pushy as vanilla BW---actually, I never really got to much of the post-game content because there was quite a bit.

B2W2 falls back on some bad design habits. HMs are nearly optional in B1W1, mainly for hidden items. Not so in B2W2, almost all of the new places you go require the things for progress.

B1W1 is also the earliest you can ever breed pokemon in a game, while B2W2 has it as post game, something not seen since Fire Red/Leaf Green.

Wait, is that next year's movie?

No, that's from the opening of this year's movie.

Also next year's movie was announced at the end but no teaser of any kind.

Edit: I'm surprised how fast the SM thread died, it didn't have staying power like XY or ORAS. But PokeJapanGAF being a thing during XYORAS kept those threads going like wildfire.

A player shouldn't have to self-implement rules to make the game challenging. The game should actually offer one. The idea that I can bring 6 Pokemon to a 2/3 Pokemon battle is ridiculous. The assertion that it's to cover typings is also silly since the damn gyms are themed. That's also a weak reason since you can have 6 Pokemon but still only be allowed to use the equivalent amount. So you can still cover typings.

it's a really dumb and backward way for the game to operate. It always has been, even more now with EXP share.

You're playing someone who is seen as a Pokemon champion by the end of the series, and you constantly have the upper hand from the begging to the end of the game. You almost always outnumber your enemy, you can just spam potions, revives, restores, and you always know what type of Pokemon you're going to go up against.

It's my favorite video game franchise, but it's never really offered a fair or challenging experience for the player. Not in the main game. I just wish it would.

Wtf Tierno? Doesn't he have a Squirtle in the anime? Did they just change it for the movie?

A good amount of those who say that the main series needs to be like BotW are probably the same ones who think turn-based battles are shit (go look in any of the earlier FFVIIR threads) and stopped playing the series years ago, so they don't care if it's completely changed.

The others are just on the "everything should be Dark Souls" train of thought, except now with BotW.

I mean I like the idea of an open world exploration game of pokémon with actual pokémon running wild. I don't want the game to ever let me control the pokémon through anything other than my trainer commands. I like the fact that I'm the trainer and not the Pokémon.

I could get behind some kind of live gameplay, but the pokémon would have to be AI operated and have cooldowns on attacks and the player would give them commands like jump, go left right, dodge ect. It would simulate a battle, keep it similar to turn based and not make it into a dark souls or action game.

It would be as close as you could get to playing the anime.

There's a fake CoroCoro scan out with a new version of Silvally---it looks pretty rad, honestly, but apparently the Japanese text is wonky.

This is like the first fake USUM thing I've seen lol. Like...nobody even cares to make fakes at this point.

Is there a specific Bait/Rock strategy for each Pokemon in Yellow's Safari Zone?

My method is step one throw ball, step two pray to lord Arceus that they get caught, step three don't mash the A button to advance the text as you will end up waste balls and capture another derp that you already had...I er do this a lot.

USUM's reveal kinda killed any chances for interesting fakes. When BW2 was announced, they didn't show anything other than the Kyurems, leaving room for things like Cactowl. Woth USUM... well, it's been kinda obvious what these games are since they were revealed.

Kinda hard to leak info if there's nothing new, hur hur hur.

I assume that The Pokémon Company gain tighter control of their info as leaks are kinda damaging to them as what happen when people discovered that Eurogamer rumour of "Pokemon Star" on the Switch was a hoax.

Sweet, Gen 2 Alola form here we come.

Honestly, I really hope they don't make Regional Forms a gen-by-gen thing. While Mega Evolutions were a poorly executed idea, they got one thing right by throwing a net across all generations (except Gen V for some reason). I feel if they just do it one at a time there will definitely end up being more missed opportunities.

I've been wonder trading off a few boxes of breeding rejects and have recieved an... unlikely... shiny kabutops. It has flawless ivs, is level 100, fully ev trained, dusk ball (which is really hard to obtain on a fossil), has pokérus, adorned with all major 7th gen ribbons and holding a comet shard. Allegedly it was bred a week ago. It's OT has .tv in their name so I'm thinking its a publicity stunt for some streamer.

Question is, do I keep it? I've released outright illegal shinies before, but this could theoretically be legal and the glorious shiny pile could always be bigger.

WPS

When was it last catchable?

Kabutops was last catchable in a dusk ball in Pokémon BW, via the dream world. It wasn't too rare at the time, but as you couldn't breed pokéballs until a generation after the dream world shut down and almost everyone just stuck everything in dream balls, finding one to use as a parent is really difficult.

In theory, it's possible that there are legal ball / pokémon combinations that never actually existed or were lost forever, but since people are more than willing to hack balls and the trade system doesn't check (looking at you, beast ball porygon) no one would notice.

Is that what you were asking?

I doubt it's gonna be some thing to expect from every game anyway. I wouldn't be surprised if they were already done with them after Alola.

Why? They're clearly doing new forms to keep older Pokemon fresh and new. In Gen 6 they tried Megas but those didn't 100% pan out since they locked out Pokemon from getting evolutions down the line if they wanted to give them one, you could only use one at a time, and they were (intentionally) overpowered. The Regional Forms model fixes all of that. They might fine tune it more in the future, but given what they've been trying to do, Regional Forms are a pretty clear sweet spot. I'm pretty sure we talked about this just a page or two ago, actually.

I do think they're trying to find new ways of getting more mileage out of older Pokemon without actually adding dex numbers, but I also feel like the Pokemon fanbase (myself included) has a habit of assuming these kind of things are some permanent fixture to expect from every game going forward when sometimes I think they just do it to add flavor to that generation/game.

Finally claimed all the Mega Stone codes...

Are there any "generic" codes that I need to use left for Sun/Moon after all the MS ones? Just in case I missed anything.
