Pokémon Community Thread 4: "Your Portal to What's Hip and Happening in Sinnoh!"

Are there really no reviews for PSMD yet? Did Nintendo not send advance copies?

According to this, they sent out review copies between yesterday and today. My guess is because the Mystery Dungeon games typically get meh scores so NOA sent the copies late so people would get recommendations from word of mouth instead of mayor gaming outlets.

I'm waiting till February for PSMD, so have fun.... -.-
And then Twilight Princess releases like 2 weeks after.

Had Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon released in Europe this year, I would have gotten it but since heh heh Digimon Cyber Sleuth is releasing in February, I opted to skip it and just wait for "Pokémon Z" later in 2016.

Looks better than gates at any rate.

I'm busy right now doing a wonder trade challenge of Pokémon Alpha Sapphire. My team is ridiculous.

They don't have an immediate effect on stats. They raise the EVs instead, so you'll notice the gains as you level up now.

The items do have an immediate effect on stats. You don't need to level up. Items force stats to recalculate immediately, and since Gen V, EVs from battling take effect after battle rather than on level up.

However, using a single item doesn't guarantee you earn enough EVs to show a change at your given level.

Huh, didn't know it worked that way

That makes it annoying to try and turn a Tyrogue into a Hitmontop/chan right now. What's the best way to level it?

How big of a gap is there between the needed stats and what you have? If it's not too large, then you could utilize items or wild battles by hunting down Pokemon that provide the EVs you need.

For leveling up, though, you could utilize Audinos due to their high Exp yield.

For some information regarding how EVs work:

1) Vitamins provide 10 EVs in their respective stat, up to 100 in a stat.
2) Defeating a Pokemon provides you with some EVs, which ones and how many depends on the species of Pokemon you defeated. Some hold items increase or manipulate the EVs you earn from battle, as well.
3) EVs in a single stat cap at 255(252 in Gen VI) and you can have a total of 510 between all stats.
4) At level 50, 8 EVs in a stat is equal to 1 stat point. At level 100, 4 EVs in a stat is equal to 1 stat point. So, the lower your level, the smaller the representation of your EVs.

Edit: You'll need to utilize EVs no matter what to manipulate your stats to where you want, though, regardless of your level.

Super MD is pretty hard, but the Enera really level the playing field if you get lucky and you can get some pretty broke combinations...

One awesome one is Type Bulldoze, which ignores Type Disadvantages/Immunities, and you can pair that with another known as Barrage which gives a chance of moves hitting multiple times. It really helped my Turtwig take care of the Combee/Beedrill Dungeon.

I didn't even realize PSMD didn't release this year in Europe. Good thing I'm not too interested in it (though I am slightly but ya know. not enough to buy it since I need to save money for other things atm) I guess.

Such a late release in Europe though :/

We still don't have an OT?

Also I play Chespin with a Riolu partner.

A scatterbrained, hyper Riolu is something really hilarious to see.

The new Pokémon Zukan Z by Takara TOMY seems pretty neat. Along with the Pokédex, it has some mini-games and other features based on the anime. Incidentally, I didn't realize Takara TOMY's Pokémon product line features so much interactivity. There appear to be a lot of tie-ins between the several toys, Tretta, and the figures. Kids these days, amirite? :p

These EV things sound complicated. How'd you find out about them? My Tyrogue's ATK is 6 stats higher than its DEF btw. I just leveld it up and it only went up by 1 despite using several resist wings and an Iron on it.

Surprisingly, SPMD starts out a bit tougher than Etrian Mystery Dungeon, as you don't have a 4-person party to gang up on early mobs. You also don't have a medic to back you up health wise. No amber tiles to help replenish moves, too, although you can use far more moves in Pokemon before being required to "refill".

This game is certainly more challenging than past PMDs, for sure.

I really liked the Wandering Chests in EMD. I expected them to be a one-time thing, but I'm glad they brought them back with PSMD's emeras. I was hoping there'd also be some equivalent for Amber, but so far it just seems to be shattered emeras.

Since I haven't had a chance yet to go to the store and get Super Mystery Dungeon, in order to satisfy that itch for PMD until I finally do get to purchase it, I started up Red Rescue Team again. This part alone has made it time well spent.

I feel like I get beat up on a lot more in this one (especially that Salamence fight, which was silly) but the game is also a lot more generous than previous ones with items. Normal hits from enemies ca be upwards of 40-60% HP, though. I've yet to run out of PP and not have an Elixir, and the only time I've run out of revive seeds was in the aforementioned fight. Coming back in with a truant wand and more revive seeds made that one possible.

Yes, this game has a lot more items, but they're also needed, as there's a lot more reliance on moves compared to previous ones, and nothing like the aforementioned Amber Tiles.
I beat Salamence on my first attempt, though.

I had no difficulty with the Salamence fight in PSMD, just did it lol. My starter is Riolu, partner Froakie. Took Victini in with me since I connected with him in town. Used a Confuse Wand and had to use two revive seeds due to bad luck but he went down fairly easily.

Lord. I don't think its worth it to complete the pokedex now, if I have to know all this just to get a Hitmonchan. It was easier in Silver where I just had to use a single mineral to get what I wanted.

You don't need to understand it much honestly unless you're going for competitive battling.

If you just need it for evolving then just give the Tyrogue the vitamin that raises the appropriate stat. Give it a bunch if money isn't a worry.

Then level him up once the stat is appropriate.

Or you can put up whatever on the GTS and ask for a Hitmonchan. Some nice soul will give you one I'm sure. (If you're just trying to complete the Pokedex and don't want to bother evolving Tyrogue, it's an option)

Where can I buy Iron? The only place I've seen them is in the Battle Subway and that requires BP which takes a lot of time to get. The Iron and Resist Wings I used earlier didn't seem to do jack.

Beat that Salamence in SMD. Did you actually need to beat him to progress or could you have done other Missions?

I got a Wobbuffet prior to that one through a Connection Orb Quest, and used him...brought along a bunch of Reviver Seeds, got close to him and used Counter to whittle him down while the Starters attacked from afar.

By the way, in this game you don't lose when one of your Starters die it seems---I swear in the old one if your Partner died, you automatically lost the Dungeon.

For the most part you're cockblocked from more missions until you beat Salamence. You can technically continue the plot by just doing regular dungeon runs - I did that for a while in my JPN playthrough - but you're best off beating Salamence ASAP.

Oh and spend most of your gold bars on those seeds that revive you at full health. I recommend having at least 25, if not more, seeds on you for the final boss.

Lol Rotom's sidequest... That was just mean. Good thing I always carry a Petrify Orb on me lol.

Dude, Wands are amazing.

There's one Wand which will warp away the Pokemon you hit it with and all the ones surrounding it. Made that trap a breeze.

I use wands a lot since I have more than I know what to do with, but a Warp Wand can send your teammate off too if it's next to them, potentially getting them overwhelmed so not always ideal. Meanwhile, a Petrify Orb just completely nullifies the danger of the whole Monster House basically lol. They all get petrified and you can pick them off easily.

Confuse Wands are awesome for stuff like Salamence, despite the RNG, because they last a good while. I took Salamence out in the duration of one Confuse Wand, he managed to KO two of my Pokemon, but one was while I was getting into position for the wand and the other was bad luck haha. Mostly smooth.

I realize Tepig REALLY got cheated out in terms of moves, everyone else gets neat shit and he gets Heavy Slam which barely does anything since he can't evolve...:(

Totodile gets Ice Fang and Metal Claw on the other hand. He wins.

So I caught up and got to the infamous Salamence you guys were talking about...

Methinks Chunsoft was still stuck in the Etrian mindset of things because it feels like I just fought a F.O.E.

It's not nearly as tricky as an F.O.E., and there's none of the kind of timed aspect they had in EMD.

Hi, quick dumb question:
I did not find an OT for Pokemon Art Academy. I picked up the game for cheap and I am now drawing Pokemon all day on the bus while traveling somewhere. Really fun and makes me realize where my shortcomings are when it comes to drawing (definitely accuracy).

I noticed you can download example pics of pokemon illustrations for the free draw mode. I tried it and got a Rayquaza pic.
Are these limited? Do I have to check back weekly or daily? Did I already permanently miss some?
Any info on this would be highly appreciated. (EU here, in case that matters.)

There was a time when they killed that service, but brought it back. We're not entirely sure on the duration of these downloads beyond their initial one and it's a hard metric to track considering they've been downloaded already

I found the trick to beating Salamence is just to confuse/paralyze him and then spam blast seeds that deal 100 damage a piece

Are there any genderless pokemon that can learn Attract?

I've tried to teach my Golurk and Genesect it, but they can't. It would make this boss a lot easier if I could subdue his pokemon with lust.

Mew and Cryogonal, not sure if there's another or not.

Edit: That said, I'm pretty sure attract fails when used by a genderless Pokemon, I don't believe they've changed that.

I remember everyone thinking that Cryogonal learning Attract hinted at some secret form it'd get in a future Gen V game.

This theory took off I recall when Movie 15 released right before B2W2 featured them in a significant role as Kyurem's underlings.

I bought Black 2 and I want to start a new save file on challenge mode. Will deleting the existing save delete the challenge mode key, or am I free to proceed?
