Remember that the battery of your phone will decay fast if you haven't used it intensively within the first month of heavy use. My Note 5 decayed from 6 hours to 5 hours in just a month before stabilizing there. Now it's lasting about 4 hours. The update might impact too with newer security measures (with Ingress a very old version of the game checked the player's position only after you moved some meters, so you could turn the GPS off and stay indefinitely in one place, then they added a 5-minute timeout--it would check positions at least once every 5 minutes-- but players were abusing it anyways, so now it checks GPS position at least once every 30 seconds, so battery consumption increased).

What's with all the extra steps for pokemonnearby now...?

Fewer people using it = stays under the radar longer.

More accounts = better service, more accounts that may avoid deletion.

For the above battery issues, mine always drained quickly with the app running - lasting only a couple hours. The phone could last 3 days with light-moderate use before the app before charging. On vacation, I was using my battery pack before noon, starting with a full charge that morning.

thank you pokemonnearby!!!

I was on my way to a park to farm some vulpix and magnemites and at a stoplight decided to open up pokemon nearby to see what is going on in this neighborhood....well, there were 6 rats...and highlighted in red was a porygon and I was like oh shit I opened up the map, saw it spawned on top of a Starbucks and I booked it over there. my heart skipped a little becsuse I recently had bad experiences with a Lapras :(

I caught this guy first try with an ultra ball and berry...horrible moveset but I don't care I'm putting him in all the gyms.

Instinct made an enemy this week: A guy walked up to me while I was taking down a gym, stood silently less than 3 feet away and stared at me. He sniped the gym and walked away without a word.

My purpose in this game is now to eliminate all instinct gyms. There's nothing more enjoyable than clearing them off the map.

You're really gonna judge all of us based on one asshole trainer? You should be taking down gyms for personal satisfaction and a healthy sense of competition, not out of spite.

The spite adds so much personal satisfaction. I have an "evil" team to contend with.

It's just a fun game, they could easily take it back later :)

Yah, after a week with the new tracker, it needs more work. Imagine 6 slots being clogged with Pokemon at your nearby Poke Stops, there or not, and there being more than 3 wild Pokemon shuffling around in the remaining slots. The inability to lock onto a Dragonite I just missed was simply aggravating.

LOL. It would be really sad if you are on team Mystic. That team is dominating the whole game, and you still want to act like a victim. I don't really have anything personal, but I do want to get a good number of coins when I play. Mystic really is making that hard in a lot of areas.

I don't have time to be going after several gyms, but I will take down a 20k prestige Blue gym near my house. It's been up for a few days now, and no opposing team has even touched it. I'll be getting good EXP from this. There are numerous 40k and 50k Blue gyms, and they stay around for a long time here. I'm happy enough with my current bonuses to not care that much, and someone will take them down.

Valor and Instinct have nowhere near as many gyms.

Frankly, Niantic, needs to at least double the amount of experience you get lowering prestige. There's still almost nil reason to bother with gyms after you claim your defender bonus.

Honestly, it'd be better to jot down his trainer name and snipe all his Pokemon off. You'd waste too many resources killing all opposing gyms solo.

It actually appears to be a pretty even split where I am. I suspect it's because the local sports team is associated with yellow, so fans skew from the national and worldwide averages. This anecdotally supported by the frequency of high level yellow gyms at sports bars. Maybe that's confirmation bias though.

If I hadn't ever checked GAF, I'd believe red was the least common.

How do you guys train your gym to level it up?

You put your pokemon there and defeat it iwth your own pokemon as well?
Like putting your 1500 Fleareon and beating it with a much lower cp water pokemon for more prestige?

Just caught my first dratini but pokemonnearby didnt detect it until it had less than 9 minutes to go which is weird but is not the first time the game tracker detects a pokemon that pokemonnearby cant

I don't understand Niantic's algorithm for the stats in this game. Has there been a study on how they come up with them?

For instance, Speed doesn't seem to be taken into account for stats. Also, Stamina seems to be based on HP doubled, whereas attack is roughly Attack+Special Attack and Defense+Special Defense with a confusing variable on the bonus the latter two stats gets (roughly 5-10%). Based on that, Snorlax should be higher than Dragonite, yet there is a 400 CP difference in favor of Dragonite.

I'm confused.

I think it only refreshes scans every 5 minutes, but there's some variables with that, it's often too busy or there's errors

But still when it works it's amazing

So I've been into Leeds city centre today and thought it would be a crap day considering i had a 790 Wartortle run from me after 8 ultra balls and 9 great balls then i missed a Snorlax, it was number one in my list and I ran around with me son for about 15 minutes trying to find it but it despawned!

But then.......

My 10k egg hatch about 15 minutes later and I was blessed with this beast with the best move set and stupid high CP, was originally 1700 but I've powered it up! My best Pokemon by far!

QP2KqT0.jpg

The methodical way of using it takes way too long

How much time do you need to walk roughly 700-1000 meters at worst?

Not knowing the despawn time can be problematic, I'll give you that.

and it assumes that you're free to walk in any direction without houses, etc. blocking the way

That's not something that a better tracking system (like the one with paw prints) would fix. Besides, it gives an advantage to who knows well that specific area and its spawn points, as it should be.

Unless you're in an open field and happen to know the exact spawn time of the Pokemon I'm pretty comfortable calling the current system basically useless.

Absolutely, if you put little to zero effort in your hunt.

Yesterday I was able to track down a Slowbro in the worst possible scenario, with a damn river at my side and just one bridge to get through it. This morning I caught a Venasaur after I picked the wrong path not once but twice.

There's still room for improvement and it is far from being ideal, that's unquestionable, but you could call it "useless" only if you'd pretend to have the exact spawn coordinates - it would be like going to the grocery store instead of hunting, basically.

Got a cool Growlith from my 5 km egg. Best Pokemon I could get I guess from that egg. Pretty happy, since fire Pokemon hardly spawn here, only water. Still needs lots of candies to get a good Arcanine. 😩

I don't intend to powerup anything until I reach L30 and start getting high IV ones at that level. The 15 or so +1000CP raticates I get powerleveling are enough to take down most L4/L5 gyms regardless of Snorlaxes and Dragonites.

I think Niantic should frequently rotate Nests to add more variety. Having a weekly rotation would be great like for 1 week it's your normal Pokemon nest and the next it's just charmanders, then magikarp, and then eggecute. Etc. Theres a good chance that each week you won't be able to collect the max candies to evolve that Pokemon in that one area.

Ever since I hatched two Lapras I can hold gyms for 1-2 days. Lapras is a beast.

Now to hunt for more candy lol

You are making me jealous. >_<

I'm not going to lie, if we could buy specific Pokemon candy in the store I'd be tempted. My Lapras is utterly useless at its caught CP, and I have no hope of ever being able to level it up enough because they are so rare.

I seem to have no luck in this game.

Edit: Buying candies probably wouldn't be the best idea because it smacks a bit too much of "pay to win"...but I do wish there was another way of working towards candies for those particularly rare Pokemon. I need to level my Lapras up 40 times to reach someone else who got lucky and caught it at 2000 CP despite being at the same level as me.

You'll get a decent one eventually.

As for me, I have never seen Snorlax and I have more than 100 Scyther candy. That will come in handy when Gen II comes around but still. Electabuzz can die in a fire though.

I've received all of my Growlithes from eggs. I evolved my strongest Growlithe yesterday, and I am happy with it. 1675 CP, excellent IVs, Bite + Fire Blast. Definitely using all my Growlithe candy on this guy.

Arcanine doesn't help against the numerous Water types here, but I'm still glad to have one. You better hope it doesn't get Bulldoze!

I really need Snorlax and Lapras.

Yeah Arcanine doesn't help against these water types, but it would be cool to use him against the occasional Exeggutor over here.

I'm gonna cry if Arcanine manages to get Bulldoze. Every fire move is fine for me! ;_; Only found one Growlith in the wild and just hatched the one with pretty good IVs from an egg. Still need 34 candies for it to evolve. Growlith and Jigglypuff is my dream from the egg hatching, since I already gave up on getting a Lapras or Snorlax. :"D Wigglytuff can be my mini Snorlax.

What's wrong with "pay to win"? It's their money, so if someone wanted to do that, so what? I'd buy candies like charmander and others that I hardly ever see at all.

And if you ask me, I don't think they should have went with Pokemon specific candy. They would have been better off just making it Pokemon candy and can be used on any Pokemon, or even go by types, like Fire candy, Water candy, Grass candy, etc.

It's far too difficult for a lot of people having it Pokemon family specific.

This some random app you're using or what? I haven't been able to make any sort of actual "hunt" with the in game one since it shows no sort of clue as to where or how far the pokemon are.

My Tour today was good.

first I hatched a Ponyta with 800+CP and perfect IV's in Attack and Defense.

then I caught a fuckton of Eevees, which allowed me to boost my 629 CP Eevee until it had 739 CP, and used the Rainer Trick on it.
still not 2000 CP, but 1993 is close enough!

also I caught a Pikachu and a Vulpix, which means I'm one step closer to Ninetails and Raichu.

I had a Mr. Mime run away from me, but I couldn't care less. I have one, and thus, don't need more of it.

I also fought against a Dragonite for the first time today (which is surprising by the way if I think about it.) Snorlax, Gyrados and Vaporeon all managed to take it down by themselves on the three attacks I needed to take over the Gym. I'm proud of those little fellas! ^^

I like this idea...but it would need a lot of balancing to not make the game too easy. If I pooled together all of my "water type" candies, I'd probably have well in excess of 500.

You'll get a decent one eventually.

Scyther seems to be a rare one for me - I've only caught one so far. Pinsir, on the other hand...

What is the consensus on the appraisal system in game?

It's pretty good. Can just transfer all the trash away after using the appraisal system instead of needing to imput the data of every Pokemon into a calculator to check for their IV. I only do that for 80%+ IVs now.
