Death Stranding 2: On the Beach |OT| Ain't That A Beach

Cool trailer.

Edit: I'm not a Troy Baker fan , but even with how amazing Clair 33 performances are, he better get best performance this year for his work here in DS2. He absolutely stole the show in every scene he is in.

Enjoying the game so far, but maybe getting a little burnt out on the gameplay loop. I'm on main order #17 so don't think I'm even halfway yet.

Would I be missing out on a lot of interesting stuff if I started doing only story orders from this point?

It is good to reach 5 star connection to all the disto centers and camp in Mexico camp before moving to Australia especially with the upgrades that might help you bit. But its not bad either if you do it around episode 5 or 7 and go through the motions of teb story. The story is very good is interesting, but I admit that world building, capturing animals, and deliveries are so addictive. Just balance it out. There will be more objectives and missions to make it easier in reaching 5 star connections on later episides.

Don't everyone in the game give you all their equipment upgrades once you get to 4 full stars? Completely filling out the 5 star usually just gets a badge or some small token and the ability to rest at their place.

Some, 4 star suffice. But 5 star is very satisfying and rewarding.

Done.

Edit: I couldn't think of anything to say because I was still trying to process what the actual fuck I just witnessed.

The guitar battle was dumb as hell and I loved every minute of it.

Was infiltrating a bandit camp and parked a van, with all my collectable items for delivery, a bit far from the camp itself.

Did my thing, knockout out everyone except one bandit, which I didn't noticed.

Fast forward a bit and I'm getting back to the van. Mere meters away from it, the bandit was hijacking the van and taking it back to the camp, along with all my delivery items 🤣🤣

MF hit the gas as soon I was approaching the van, as if he was waiting for me.

This game is clicking way more than the first one did.

That's awesome.

I got the platinum at the end of July and did everything that there is to do. Played almost every day since "early access," and I've finally uninstalled. Needless to say, I thoroughly enjoyed playing Death Stranding 2.

Here are some thoughts and observations:
  • This is the most accommodating video game I've ever played. There was a concerted effort to reward progress with convenience, and virtually eliminate frustration.
    • You will want for nothing; everything you need is plentiful.
    • Much like the first game, you'd have to impose restrictions on yourself to actually find a challenge. Kojima is trolling you with the "brutal" difficulty option.
    • Enemy bases don't ping anymore, which is a shame, because nullifying their ping was a nice piece of tech in the previous game.
      • I used live rounds on all enemy bases, disposed of the bodies, and then slept for seven days. Enemies didn't respawn, so it's possible that mechanism is guided by real time and not in-game time. I'm not reinstalling to find out, though.
        • Dollman gets righteous and yappy when you start smoking the opps. Outside of that, you're not penalized a single like. Run over an armadillo, though...
  • I didn't emotionally connect with the story; Kojima did a poor job of priming the pump. Whenever there was a revelation or a twist, I mostly just shrugged --- it felt inconsequential. I didn't have this issue with the first game.
    • Don't get me wrong --- there were some solid performances. Luca Marinelli, Troy Baker, and Tommie Earl Jenkins did very well. This isn't a failure on the part of the actors.
  • Woodkid claimed Kojima changed something in the story because he received positive feedback. Looking back, I honestly couldn't tell you what that could be; most of the story felt as mainstream as it gets.
  • The world felt spookier in the previous game. In the sequel, most of the spookiness happens during cutscenes --- typically, as in the first game, the result of Sam having a nightmare.
    • Dollman's "paper sailors" ghost story was cool, though.
  • Lest anybody believe that Kojima would let a meddling executive muddy his vision, Die Hardman randomly has a dance number, and nobody is telling Kojima to put that in!
    • Somebody should've told him not to put that in.
      • Somebody should've definitely told him not to put that gay tentacle kiss nightmare in the game, either.
      • I know this is a funny thing to say about an icon, but if there's a Kojima whisperer out there, I hope he finds his way to KojiPro.
        • New mythical game dev unlocked: Hideo Kojima with the right collaborative partner.
  • Sam teams up with people who have superpowers --- and they only use them during cutscenes.
    • I would've liked to see Rainy and Tomorrow utilized in gameplay, as with the DHV Magellan.
  • We can count on Kojima to showcase cruelty/torture in his games. Some would say playing Death Stranding is torture, but not me.
    • In the first game, during a flashback, Higgs forces Fragile to choose between beach-jumping to save herself or delivering a bomb on foot in timefall while wearing only a tank top and underwear. In the sequel, Higgs engulfs Sam in flames with the flamethrower guitar from Mad Max: Fury Road. When Sam dies, the flames go out; when he repatriates, they return, trapping him in an infinite loop.
      • Sam initially reacts like he's in excruciating pain, but after the first repatriation he acclimates a little too well. His reaction becomes so understated that the torture starts to look more like an inconvenience.
        • Kojima just wanted us to hear Troy Baker sing BB's Theme.
        • At some point, at the end of a cutscene, Tomorrow says to Sam, "And we're tougher than you, too." Meanwhile, she has supernatural abilities and Sam's an Amazon driver. Whatever, lady.
  • Kaiju battles are cool, and they don't make any sense to me.
    • I summoned a Gigas to fight a Raia, and the fucker inhaled it right out of the sky. That was awesome. I didn't have to do anything.
      • I just don't understand why large BTs are manipulable or summonable in the first place. If BTs are hostile to the living, in what meaningful way would capturing --- then summoning --- a large BT make it adversarial to other large BTs and not to Sam?
  • I liked using Dollman as a Nerf football.
    • He's no Mimir from Dad of War, who mostly alerted me to imminent attacks from my blind side. Dollman mostly just told me to take a shower whenever I woke up, then weirded me out by watching me eat bugs, wishing he could do the same.
    • Is Dollman father-of-the-year material? The chain of events that led to his spirit becoming trapped in a doll is irredeemably retarded.
      • "I was a medium..."
        • ...and now you're a small, dummy. Get it?
  • I thought natural hazards would play a bigger role in the world. Timefall still reigns supreme.
    • The gate quakes you actually experience are all scripted, and the others are usually far away and don't affect you at all.
    • Floods often happen, and they never inconvenienced me.
    • Watching a sandstorm approach was awesome and kind of terrifying at the same time, but being caught inside one is actually fun because you can lose your sense of direction.
    • I've schlepped through the mountains many times and thought I would experience more than the one scripted "avalanche," but that was not the case.
    • I've only used the tar cannon once, and it wasn't mine. Aside from the scripted brush fire, there's only one other brush fire that continually burns, and Rainy doesn't give a single solitary fuck.
  • I'm on PS5 Pro and played in quality mode through 99% of the platinum. I switched to performance mode once I completed the story, and it felt like I entered warp speed. I honestly felt like an idiot after switching because, aside from frame rate, I couldn't tell the difference between the two modes. I'll probably watch a Digital Foundry video about it at some point.
    • I watched the Digital Foundry video. I can confirm, I am an idiot.
  • I appreciate the attention to detail, but I really hate that viewing the map is directly tied to whether you're able to perform the thumbs up animation. It's cool, but it's annoying.
  • Die Hardman ordered Sam to destroy BB at the end of the first game... uhh... good thing he didn't. lol

That's a whole lot of text.

For me, the game was a simple retread of the first game. The whole thing felt very flat to me. Even the moments of cool, which it had, just didn't feel earned.

it just didn't do enough to justify its existence

So another useless sequel which took 5 years

Useless is probably exaggerated, but yes, it does fall into the safe sequel category that doesn't push/do anything interesting, just like all previous Sony sequels like Ragnarok, SM2, etc. Doesnt mean it's a bad game. I defo wouldnt get excited for such a sequel unless its dev time was 3 years at max.

Article:
"The real evaluations come after—10 or 20 years from now," he says.

(twenty years later)

"It's shit!

"Hold on! I meant to say 40 years!"

"You'll be 102!"

"Are you in a rush? Just wait for me to die."

Its such an obvious historically proven truth that the value of any creative work is best demonstrated over the fullness of time (as opposed to date of first publication or exhibition) that I don't feel the need to reel off lists /pof failures and also-rans that were later hailed as classics.

Similarly, in a few years time noone will care a bit about today's fashions and expectations, stuff that clouds perception.

If you recognize the truth of the above, Kojima's right. If you disagree... enjoy your battle with reality!

Finally beat this today, after 170 hours. It would've been even higher, but after a certain point I felt extremely railroaded to the end (even though you technically aren't).

Loved the whole thing. Some spoiler musings:

Deadman is the samurai? Lame. Just makin baby noises for no reason. And then Higgs takes it over. Great job fella.

So glad they have a Q-pid "off" mode! The brief period where there were ghost mechs all over was an awesome way to recontextualize a by-then familiar map. I was hoping it was a permanent world state and disappointed when it went away…but its back!

Why does Neil try to kill you 3 times??? Was he just that jealous?

Just finished the game, really one of the greatest endings to a game I have ever experienced with a very bittersweet ending, a vortex of victory and tragedy at the same time. Luca Marinelli's character really stole the show for me, the last shot of him we see, that face, the eyes speak a million words, truly outstanding.

So I just started the game today, been avoiding this thread to avoid spoilers. Just finished chapter 1, holy shit!

Anyway, this is the best looking game this gen, it looks absolutely insane and it runs so smooth too, playing quality on a standard PS5. This is a noticeable leap over the first game.

I played the Director's Cut earlier this year, so the story and everything is still fresh in my mind. Great pacing so far, I'm absolutely hooked.

Decima engine rocks

Well, it took 20 years for MGS2 to be seen as Kojima's magnum opus

No, it's one of his most devisive games. Only think I liked about that game was the tanker segment with Snake. MGS3 is a massively better game IMO. And this game is pretty awesome as well.

Minus 61

Now I kinda hope we get OD and the next MGS remake within the same quarter as well. What a treat for Kojima fans.

Not that I've even played DS2 or Delta yet 😅

This Game will never be remembered as a Masterpiece nobody is playing a Walking Simulator. Kojimbo has only good game is MGS3 before he get weird.
You sound confused tbh. By this logic Mario is a running simulator.

I've never gone a walk where I was hounded by ghosts, robots, and black goo monsters.
You must be from San Francisco.

Good thing there are endless Call of Duty games and Fortnite for you to spend your gaming expertise on. It's clear you haven't even played this one or DS1. Yes they have walking as a part of the game but they are so much more than that.

No, Mario's core gameplay isn't just running, but platforming through the environment, which is fun, meaning it doesn't drag on for 40 hours and always feels fresh in what you're doing.

In Death Stranding, the core gameplay consists of running, delivering packages, and because it's so boring, you build vehicles, which in turn undermines the actual gameplay.

I was a huge Kojima fan and played all of his titles. With MGSV, I devoured every theory and counted the days until release.

But after Death Stranding, he mutated into a self-absorbed developer who acts like an artist, even though the gameplay is outdated and bad, and the story and cutscenes are boring.

And I don't like CoD/Fortnite either. I played Death Stranding 1, and it was simply terrible considering how much money and time went into it. I can understand Konami's point.

Now this is interesting to me. MGS V is my most played game (by hours) of all time. DS 2 feels like a true sequel to MGSV to me...almost moreso than its own predecessor. DS2 really identifies that same groove of MGSV and makes itself comfortable.

In Death Stranding, the core gameplay consists of running, delivering packages, and because it's so boring, you build vehicles, which in turn undermines the actual gameplay.
This particular complaint feels very familiar to criticisms that players had of MGSV regarding the large number of non-story missions. Boring, samey missions, with access to "perfect" tools let you invalidate the challenge, etc.

I'm not trying to "logic" you into changing your mind. I just sincerely felt that so much I love about DS2 particularly relates to my fond feelings for MGSV. Getting bored of the "perfect" tool and the same mission flow? Leave Quiet on mother base, bring D-horse on the chopper. Similarly for DS2, park the pickup in the garage and go pick a fight with a BT.

So you're happy that they cancelled Silent Hills?

Despite P.T creating massive hype they decided to literally bury it and do Metal Gear Survive instead ? And you see their "point" ?

yep. some of the most iconic movies of all time were shunned by critics and especially the audience. blade runner is the obvious one, but just looking at oscar best picture winners you will see dozens of movies that are now considered classics that lost to mid tier oscar bait garbage no one remembers today. i mean goodfellas lost to dances with wolves lmao. pulp fiction and shawshank redemption lost to Forrest Gump, brokeback mountain lost to crash, and those are just the movies that were well received by critics. Fight club was destroyed by critics and failed to make any money at the box office. this is also true in literature. classics like moby dick barely sold any copies and the guy who wrote it never saw it become an american classic.

just the other day, a tiktok video went viral of a girl being blown away by MGS2 AI predicting virtually everything thats going on today. everything. she literally got scared it was that accurate.

And lets not forget how poorly DS1 was received just six years ago with all the youtubers and twitter fanboys shitting on it for engagement farming. it barely sold a couple of million in the first year, but slowly became a hit.

The problem with critics and audiences is that we dont get greatness all the time. especially true greatness because sometimes we are just not ready. moby dick found its audience almost half a century after it was published. the writer was simply ahead of its time. im playing mgs3 right now and for a 21 year old game, it is still one of the greatest things ive ever played.

this shot blew me away. the screenshot doesnt do it justice. the guy acts with his eyes. his entire purpose becomes clear in one single closeup. jaw dropping storytelling.

Edit: I'm not a Troy Baker fan , but even with how amazing Clair 33 performances are, he better get best performance this year for his work here in DS2. He absolutely stole the show in every scene he is in.
i agree. i am a big fan of everyone in Expedition 33 but troy fucking killed it. his best performance since TLOU1. I also loved Lea Seydoux's work. she's the emotional heart of the game and her final few scenes broke me. wonderful actress. i think both of them should win best actor and best actress over Maelle and Verso who were both brilliant, and should be nominated. lets hope keighley has separate categories for men and women this year because there are just so many people to nominate. henry in KCD2 was also fantastic. Luca also deserves a nomination as well as the Split Fiction girls.

I agree 100%.
I thought Luca Marinelli was absolutely impressive in all of his scenes – and that was really just with his eyes. Combined with his role in the overall plot, this scene (no words, just a look) was so powerful... simply impressive.

Oh DS gameplay isn't just walking.

DS2 is one of the few games I keep coming back to for graphic fidelity only, just to make screenshots and enjoy the atmosphere of the landscape.
This time, on moon safari again, I have ascended 2 more summits:

Great pics, but honestly DS2 is forever dropping incredible sights as you play.

Personal favourite moment for me was arriving at the Motherhood as a dust-storm was raging. Sunlight sending slanting shards through the monorail towers highlighting the volumetrics. For maximum impact ensure the Magellan is parked there (ideally with the dazzle ships skin) so you get the prismatic lens flare effect as you approach.

I know, I know that's a very specific thing to replicate, especially as time of day is critical to arrange the lighting/direction of the shadows, but that happened organically during my run and honestly the effect was so jaw-dropping that I didn't even think to switch to camera mode!

I'm so bad at stealth in this game, every time I try to take on an encampment that way I end up alerting guards and getting the whole camp on my ass. The shotgun has been very effective in those situations.

Honestly though it's been more fun going all out guns blazing with all the options you have now.

Boss fights and overall combat is remarkably better than the first game.

Finished the plat today, first one of those in a long time. 155 hours.

Loved the game obviously, not happy with how things turned out for some characters though. Really hope we get a 3rd game.
