Ashby, the speed limit pertains to the distances you need to walk/jog/slowly ride your bike to hatch eggs, nothing else.
If you attack a friendly Gym, you get XP, and the Gym gets Prestige. To get the most benefit, attack with Pokemon very close to (especially slightly under) CP of what your allies have at that Gym. When a Gym gets enough prestige, it goes up in Gym Level and unlocks another Pokemon slot. If you're on the Gym when the slot is open you can leave one of your Pokes in it.
If any individual pokemon is defeated in an actual battle (other team), it gets sent back to the owner. Challengers have to defeat all of the pokemon stashed there to actually claim the Gym.
How do you leave a Poke at a friendly gym?
There'll be buttons on the bottom to train and leave a Pokémon, but you can only leave Pokémon if the gym has free slots.
The gym was the same color as my team, and j had a button on the bottom left of the screen. Bottom right is battle (1 on 1)
Just to elaborate here:Ah the dark side of city living. I only had a boxing glove icon at my local Brooklyn friendly gym.
