I had my first real walk around the neighborhood. 1.63km. Resulted in catching:

1x Squirtle (+ 1x in Tutorial phase earlier today)
1x Caterpie
3x Pidgey
2x Rattata
1x Bellsprout
2x Gastly
3x Drowzee
1x Seel
1x Horsea

I gave up on a Zubat as I missed with like fifteen pokeballs.
I'm level 4 now.

It was surprising to see how well placed the Pokemon spots are. I discovered there's a Wild West Themed street shortly from my apartment as well as a funny painting of a nurse on a tree somewhere. How did they source their data?

Anyways. I acted like a weirdo in very public places including very crowded traffic/pedestrian streets but it was actually a pretty thrilling. There's a gym very nearby so I will have a second walk this afternoon.

How do I get candy to level up my characters? Just by visiting pokestops mostly?

Catch a Ratata for ratata candy etc... or transfer any unwanted Pokemon and they give you a piece of candy.

Most of the stops are from Ingress. Any significant landmark or location was considered a portal, now they've transferred over to Poke Stops.

I captured every gym in town, all of ours are just out in the open, no real buildings to go in, we had a huge storm warning with tornado warnings as well, rain blowing, 60 mile an hour winds.... and in that time.... someone managed to take all my gyms. That is some dedication.

By catching more of that Pokemon. You get three pieces of candy for every Pokemon of that family you catch and you can get a fourth piece by giving the weaker ones to the professor.

Yes, I'm converting all duplicates into candu. I normally power up after evolving. I'm not sure which one is better though.

Everything is stored online on Niantic's servers, you should have no issues when it actually comes out. It's not out in Canada yet and I'm already level 17.

The city seems divided in red and blue, but very few yellow.
Haven't made up my mind just yet, but if I can't take over gyms of my team I'm going with Yellow.
