Pokémon Go |OT| As in "Go Outside"

Again, not true on iOS. I don't know if Google Maps API share a common cache between apps on Android, if someone knows, they can easily prove or disprove this.

But since it explicitly also mentions iOS, best not to spread lies like that?

Yeah just downloaded on my 5S to give it a try and no offline option. =/

They really need to find a better way to work the indicator letting you know how close a Pokemon is to you. I don't care if I have to walk but the 3 paw print Pokemon are nearly impossible to locate and in dense areas you end up doing lots of backtracking due to running into dead ends where you can't continue moving forward.

Even if they would just put a highlighted area on the map of the general area that you should be looking would be fine. I lost chances at Onyx, Scyther and a Ninetails because I know I wouldn't be able to find them at 3 prints. It's my one major issue with the game currently outside of stuff that's already confirmed coming in patches.

home.

getting harder to talk about this without sounding like I am just making shit up. that was some of the most fun I've had in my entire life.

Well I just did a quick search and there's no evidence that the Google Maps app shares its cached map data with other apps that use the API on Android either. I'm gonna put it down as completely fake.

How much money have you guys spent so far?

I haven't spent anything yet, but tempted to buy pokeballs.

I've managed to stay 100% free2play in almost every mobile game so far, and even then the most I've ever spent has been about $5 total in Nintendo Badge Arcade. I've spent about $20 on PokemonGO already.

Those Egg Incubators are INVALUABLE.

Also, I went downtown again around 11 tonight, thinking it'd be dead since it's a Sunday. The bars and such weren't in full blast mode but there were still just as many people and just as many Lure Modules being set up. I walked in loops around the middle of town for hours again and then when I finally started getting cold and tired I parked my car between two PokeStops that both had Lure Modules and sat there organizing and Transferring my collection. The Lures wore off but people kept refreshing them, and I ended up sitting there until almost 3 AM before they wore off and almost everyone had slowly trickled away. Then I drove to a nearby Gym, and caught a Charmander in the park around it. Crossed paths with a group of four teenage kids maybe 14-15 all trying to triangulate the position of possibly the same Charmander. Again: this is like 3 AM on a Sunday. Took over the gym, drove to two more gyms and took those over, and then noticed the Pokemon I'd left at the gym in the charmander park is back - I bet it was those kids!

Now it's 4 AM and I'm home having ramen and I don't know - if they trickle in features and social options and keep updating PokeStops, hopefully by crowdsourcing harder and giving us a website or interface to make suggestions/submissions, I could do this once or week or something easily. It actually turned our city commons into a commons.

I don't quite understand, how do I level up my Pokémon? I caught one more Rattata some minutes ago, and decided to "power up", so I assume I powered up the Rattata I already owned, and not the new one I caught?

Yessss!
haKL8gE.jpg

After this I got Eevee from my only 10km egg. Fuck that.

Quick question:

What causes Pokemon to disappear from the order before your own? I'm currently the strongest Pokemon at a gym but those Pokemon that were weaker in the gym have disappeared and the gym is back to level 1. Any idea?

Powering up is generally what leveling up is now. This increases their hitpoints and their "CP", their COMBAT POWER.

Attacking a gym lowers it's prestige, this lowers it's level if you go low enough. This makes the lower pokemon drop out since the "level" is how many pokemon stand guard there.

Thanks for the explanation. So if I powered up my original Rattata with my newly caught one, I won't have any duplicate right?

If you clicked "Power up" on the screen that popped up when you caught the new rattata, you powered up the new one.

It's the candy that you get from catching duplicates that you use to power stuff up.

You get 3 candy per catch, and 1 per transfer. Transfer any duplicate pokemon you don't want.

Great write up Hawkian. Appreciate the effort!

edit: nvm give it to hawkian

Awesome stuff Hawkian

Should be added to the OP. Great work Hawk.
Thanks a ton you guys. Here are permalinks we can use to guide people. Adding a "Myths and Easter Eggs" section to Part 2 ;)

Nice work Hawkian. One suggestion though - the Gen 1 type chart is outdated since the game includes Steel/Dark/Fairy types. Probably should update it with a Gen 6 one.
Wow. I had no idea, thanks. That's really interesting that they took the time to do that (include type revisions that didn't exist for Gen 1).

Hawkian, is there a set way to get the xp bonuses from nice, great, and perfect? I can always get nice but never the other two.
It seems to me to be "hit the pokemon as square on the noggin as fast as possible." I can't get them at all reliably.

It's getting wrecked man. It's a warzone out there.

No seriously, another team is reducing its prestige, each level reduction kicks out a pokemon, and they will be able to take it easily at level one.

Prove that it does anything outside of Google Maps though.

I don't care one way or the other but I'm not sure why you're so stuck on this.

It takes practically no effort and hardly any data to download the map for your area. If it works, it works. If it doesn't, whatever, you wasted 30 seconds to a minute of time.

Let people have their placebos.

I never said it did. I downloaded the map of my city and I don't perceive any real differences beyond a subjective feeling that stuff loads slightly quicker/smoother. Might just be the servers not shitting the bed for once.

Basically what TI82 said but I'll add some stuff. Say you're the strongest pokemon at a level 3 gym. Since it is level 3 that means there can be a total of 3 pokemon from the same team at that gym. It orders the pokemon at a gym from lowest to highest CP so people who are trying to takeover the gym have to go in order. If they can consistently beat the lower level pokemon but can't be yours they will still eventually lower the gym's prestige level.

If they don't beat all of the pokemon at the gym it will take longer to lower the prestige level. Each time the level decreases then one of the pokemon gets removed from the gym. Eventually once they beat enough pokemon at the gym the prestige level hits 0 and they can take it over.

In order to make a gym stronger and add more pokemon to it you have to train pokemon of the same team there and it will increase the prestige level.

Exactly, my area only took up 9.5MBs plus I was on WiFi.

I'm lvl 4, getting closer to lvl 5 and the gyms. Pretty excited about this! I should head for the park later today and discover some new Pokemon.

I was beginning to run low on pokéballs, so I went down to the shops. Thanks to a particularly ornery poliwag on the way home I returned with even less.

It's a half hour walk just to get there. :(

I do at least now own one of the local gyms for the glory of Team Mystic. I doubt it will last long, this place is a Team Valour stronghold.

so I guess it's time for bed. You would have thought my group of 4 would have been the only ones playing with silly pokeymans past 3am. But no. Grabbed a Gym, then noticed some Valor punks walking in a circle around the block waiting for us to leave, and craning their heads to overhear our strategizing about what to leave defending after boosting it to level 4. Spent an hour as the bicycle vanguard for a slow-moving caravan of pokemon trainers trying to rapid-hatch eggs in the middle of the night. let a butterfree slip through my fingers and then gained my first pikachu. Then had a turf war at an art museum with 7 strangers. with pokemon. At 5:45AM. on sunday night.

did it just become the future.

This game sounds amazing, happy to read it is a succes and the game seems to bring people together =) I cannot wait until the game releases here in Europe!

Europe has been battling and catching fiercely since day one. Getting the app from US/AUS is trivial.

I can understand waiting for the official EU release, but if you really can't wait there's plenty of ways to get in right now. There's a ton of people already playing.

Just like in the animes. We finally becoming Japan

Because it's being advertised as saving data? If said maps don't actually take up much data anyway, then what was the point?

The likely data usage from the app is that it downloads data and models of each Pokémon the first time you encounter that Pokémon. And of course, also all the gyms, Pokéstops and lure module locations.

Also, because someone on the internet is wrong so I must set them straight!

How have the servers been doing for the last 24 hours? Apparently Niantic won't continue releasing the game in other regions (besides the Japan cocktease a few hours ago) until things are more stable.
Please tell me the servers are stable as fuck, like the PS4.

Also why the fuck did they lock the maps in Japan but not in Europe if they're trying to get things stabilized? Arghhh...

Way more stable over the last 24 hours. I haven't hit a single snag as far as connecting goes.

There's still plenty of bugs to be fixed though. The 1HP bug and the catching freeze bug are really annoying.

Still hiccups from time to time, but much better than the first few days, when outages lasted hours. Definitely get signed out a lot less when server errors occur now too.

Europe and Japan in mere days!

Thank you for your patience. We have been working to fix the server issues. We will continue rolling out #PokemonGO to new countries soon.

UPDATE 11TH JULY: Now then, the Wall Street Journal has today run a report that says Pokémon Go will "likely be available in other regions, including Europe, Japan and other Asian nations within a few days". That info comes from "people familiar with plans for the game", apparently.

"Days" bodes well for a release this week. But when exactly - early or late this week? - we don't know.

They better fix the 1hp bug by then.
