Pokémon Go |OT| As in "Go Outside"

Damn.

That sounds fun as hell. I bet Pokemon like hanging out at zoos hahaha

The Facebook group I'm in for my metro area's Pokemon Go League passed 1000 members this morning. The Mystic-only local group (which is only people who have met each other in person in this immediate area) has 40 alone.
Theres over a 1000 people interested too

Aight, think i'll stop playing until they get rid of these bugs. The GPS doesn't seem to work half the time, and the other half i have to deal with the game freezing whenever i try to catch a pokemon.

I don't see how a latecomer to the game can catch up fast enough to take on a gym. I finally found a gym and the trainer there is just too strong and pretty soon it'll just continually escalate in strength that a newbie would have to grind for a long time to be able to take it on.

That's how it works right, or am I missing something?

No, the game is heavily biased to attackers. Basically, as long as you can beat even one of their Pokemon, you can knock their prestige down. If you knock their prestige down long enough, you can reduce the number of Pokemon defending it, and repeat this and you can get it down to just one defender. So, as long as your best six can beat the one single strongest Pokemon defending the gym, you can eventually take it (although you'll need a tonne of revives).

For those out of the loop

If you're on iOS, check your Google Permissions otherwise you're granting your entire Google Account access.

And it's on Ars http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2016/07/pokemon-go-on-ios-gets-full-access-to-your-google-account/

So if I remove it am I good?

I think the way it works is that you're part of a team. You're fighting on behalf of your team. If you didn't get the job done, you at least did some damage and someone else can pick up the fight where you left off. (I could be way off, if so I have no idea how to progress at a gym).

It would be cool if this game became so popular that:

- random coffee shop (or other) gets tagged as a Pokestop
- business soars due to Go players spending extended time there
- business re-brands to something Pokemon-esque themed

Complete.
Global.
Saturation.

So my game glitched out right when I was catching a Pokemon that would get me to level 5. Had to reset the game and it registered that I caught the Pokemon and gave me all the exp and shit for it but I wasn't able to pick a team or anything. Can you pick your team when you go to a gym instead?

I keep seeing this, that it's already blowing up in places that people can't even get it from their official stores yet. I really hope some other people out there are getting exactly how significant this is!

What country are you in?

I'm in Sweden. I don't feel that Nintendo as a whole has been super popular here, not for a while at least, but Pokémon's always been huge. I really hope it gets as big as I think it could here, and stays popular for a while; would love to see it be a thing when I get back to university.

Well a few things are at play here.

  • Each Pokemon you see there is fixed- they won't change or grow in power until the entire Gym is taken back over. If its prestige level is raised, a new slot will open (and either a stronger or weaker or equivalent new Pokemon can be added), but this can't be done forever either- I think 8 mons is looking like the max. If unassailed, eventually, the gym will reach a point where it can't become any more challenging, because you can't switch out or remove a Pokemon you've placed in.
  • More than one person can attack a gym simultaneously. Pairs of two trainers attacking will actually be teamed up in-game while attacking it. Coordinating with your local team goes a HUGE way toward quickly toppling fortified enemy gyms.
  • There's no limit on attacking enemy gyms. If you have a lot of Pokemon, even with not-quite-competitive CPs, you can lower the gym's prestige by attrition if you're really dedicated, basically to the point where you run out of Pokemon, revives, and potions. This is clearly a very intentional mechanic to avoid the scenario you're talking about- if someone really wants to take aim at a Gym and take it down, they're going to be able to. Creating one that will last against many attackers is much harder, and creating an unbeatable gym is basically impossible.
  • A smart attack- preparing for the types in the gym with your own lineup, means you can challenge enemies above your CP and still win. Thus, really strong Gyms don't just have lots of high CP Pokemon but planned, tricky combinations of types for challengers to negotiate.

Saw a Porygon in town but it vanished when I went to look for it.

I also caught a Jynx, got my pokéball stock back up to usable, and retook the churchyard gym.

I didn't realise you can't put multiple of your own pokémon in a gym, so it may currently be staffed by a Parasect and not my star pidgeot.

You pick your team when you tap a gym.

Went to the harbour to find water Pokémon. First one I encountered, a Seadra, slipped through my fingers when the servers went down, but I caught a lot of Pokémon I didn't have yet.

Super happy with the high CP Exeggutor, the Dratini and FINALLY I caught that Staryu. I kept missing that one because of server errors in the past days, and this one took 5 tries before I finally succeeded.

Game keeps freezing every time I use a pokeball on my LTE works perfectly fine on wifi. Is this a problem on my end of the server?

You have to pick a team from a gym. You didn't miss anything.

I'm so shocked to see people into this game, and even asking me how to get the game (since it's not officially out yet over here). Pretty crazy what a phenomenon it became so quickly.

... I'm contemplating buying a battery pack. My phone's battery is fine for regular use, but leaving my screen on just draaaains the battery since it's QHD. Where's the Pokémon licensed battery packs at, Nintendo? But no really, I need to find a good one online.

Just going to take this opportunity to point out that Choice Specs Modest 252 Sp.Atk Zapdos outspeeds and OHKOs both Articuno and Moltres, regardless of build, with Thunder. They don't even got a chance.

I'm in NYC and using my data plan not wifi and I have had zero servers issues, not a single one. It's so weird that you guys are having so much trouble

additionally i have found if your data connection is intermittent the game will crash.
