Pokémon Go |OT| As in "Go Outside"

A couple of questions:

1). If you set a Lure at your house, does that lure become publicly viewable? Or does that only happen at Pokestops?

2). How does the game determine what a Pokestop is?

If I use a Lure module on a Pokestop, does it only attract the Pokemon I see in my 'Nearby'? Or do I have chance of encountering some more rare ones?

it has its own rules and ignores the nearby

I've seen Allakazham, Hitmonchan, and basically everything that normally isn't on my nearby. But you will also of course get the shit thats nearby as well lol

Oh btw, last night i woke up at like 4am absolutely convinced that i had to go out because a Venosaur appeared near my house

Shit is getting to my head i guess lol

(and yes i checked my phone but nothing)

2). How does the game determine what a Pokestop is?

1) It only happens at PokéStops.
2) It pulls data from Niantec's previous game Ingress. Back in 2012-2013 people could add landmarks to Ingress. Those landmarks are now PokéStops in Pokémon Go.

So, how close to a PokeStop do I have to be to reap the benefits of a lure module? I got a coffee shop next to one where I live, but it's sort off across the street and I doubt it's close enough for me to get items from the Stop.

Don't know for sure, but you probably need to be in the falling petal area for it to do anything.

Last night there was a stop that was basically perma lured, but I don't know why. It's just a street corner. No businesses there. It's basically a plaque next to a parking garage. Were people just hanging out in the garage? It's a government garage too.

The police park their cars in the parking lot across the street, so it's a rather safe part of town. The garage is for the courthouse.

I could see that stop from my house, and was very tempted to walk down the street and see what was up.

Similarly I saw a lure at a hospital entrance the other day so naturally I went over... I was the only one there though. Random lures?
edit: Actually one guy came ten minutes after I arrived.

If anyone with an Intel device is lurking, the updated .apk on APKMirror is working on some phones with Intel processors. Got it running in my Zenfone 2 right now! It's not perfect (there are some minor visual bugs on my phone, and one guy on the Zenfone2 subreddit reported crashing), but it's better than nothing,

Went on a late night adventure my dog. Took a couple gyms on campus, was easy peasy with no lag. Dodging is incredibly simple, lol.

EDIT: One of my gyms already taken.

Got a few questions I was hoping people might be able to help with:

1) Is it best to evolve Pokemon first and then power them up, or vice versa? Or does it make no difference?

It makes no difference to their CP whether you evolve now or later. However, movesets are permanent, and set at random on evolution. You don't want to spend lots of time leveling a Clefairy if it turns into a Clefable with a particularly rubbish moveset. So generally, you want to evolve first to find out if what you have is worth training further.

As a rule of thumb, though, you won't want to start evolving/powering anything except 12-candy Pokemon like Weedle, Caterpie, and Pidgey, until much higher levels, because simply leveling your trainer will get you much stronger Pokemon fresh from the wild without having to bother wasting candy and stardust. I'd wait until at least level 12 or so, but if you're really serious wait until level 20, which is sort of the main "gate" at the moment. Leveling past 20 slows down immensely, so it is much more viable to power stuff up.

2) When you have a duplicate unevolved Pokemon (that can evolve), is it best to always just transfer the one with the lowest CP? I was wondering if you get anything extra for transferring Pokemon with higher CP. I know if you have a fully evolved Pokemon/Pokemon that doesn't evolve, it can sometimes be worth keeping one with lower CP if it has better moves.

You don't get anything extra for transferring higher CP Pokemon. In general, just transfer the lowest CP 'mon you have unless a) it is fully evolved and has a better moveset, b) it was hatched from an egg (they have higher CP caps), c) it has something cool you like such as XL or XS size which have no real effect but just add some personal uniqueness, or d) sentimental value (starters4lyfe).

3) How do you guys determine which Pokemon to place in gyms, which to challenge gyms with, and how much stardust/candies to invest in each Pokemon? How do you decide how many Pokemon to split your resources between? Do you pump one up to be a powerhouse, or try to make an even team? If so, how many strong Pokemon do you tend to aim for?

Gyms fall super quickly. In my morning trip, I claim all 4 local gyms, get my rewards, and then accept I'll just have to do it again tomorrow; so I leave something behind that I reckon can last up to an hour or so. You can only really judge that by your local area.

You'll want enough Pokemon to have SE against all the major types, both attacking and defensive. That's only really applicable to high levels, though. Again, at lower levels the best power progression comes from leveling your trainer and not powering your Pokemon. Later on, you'll be wanting some of the top tier Pokemon like Alakazam, Dragonite, Snorlax, Lapras, and so on, but don't worry about that now.

Man, it's too hard to get into your own team's Gyms, sometimes.

Winning raises prestige a hilariously low amount, and you're still on the hook for Potions.

Some of the Yellows around here have multiple 1500+Mons while I'm just scraping 1000 at my best. I can't do well enough against my own teammates to get into a Gym, and the Reds and Blues I can beat take it back almost instantly with nobody to back me up.

Also, hatched my first 10km egg...and got an Eevee.
Eevees are pretty common around here. Seems like every gym is bursting with Jolt-Flare-Vaporeons.

Now that it's rolling out to UK and Germany apparently, has there been any word about Canada. Cause this wait is killing me. Don't know what compelled me to wait for the official release but I waited too long to turn back now :(

There's a gym down the street with 2 1800 Gyarados and I can't find an electric Pokemon for the life of me. I want to demolish the gym so bad. :( Jolteon or Electabuzz would be perfect.

A Gyrados. The professor must have a huge aquarium for all the poor discarded Magikarps sent to him to get it.

If you leave a Pokemon at a gym, do you lose it? Or can you get it back when/if your gym is taken over, or you visit it again?

It's only Germany so far. Nothing in the UK.

Yeah, the game favours attackers, which is fine. Turf wars are fun and exciting and keep particular gyms from simply being on lock for a team. But the reward system is based around holding gyms, which is extremely unreliable. I feel like it needs a rethink.

So, since this is now out in Germany, I started it. Lagged like hell. My name is already taken. And the nearest Pokestop is 10-15 minutes on foot. I probably have to use my bike for the first time in 5 years again... xD

People in my city yesterday.

Keep in mind the game was not even out.

Crazy.

WoW!
Where is that ? *_*

Nice, so I can finally use those PokeStops. There's quite a few around my place. But the best thing? There's a gym right besides my apartment which I'm gonna try and overtake tonight or tomorrow when I'm lvl 5.

Electabuzz showed up right at my desk, happy days. Pidgeot gyms around me, be prepared!

There was an empty gym inside an actual monastery near where I live. Unfortunately, I couldn't get to it then. If it's still there at the weekend, I'm going to make the trek there. There is a surprising amount of gyms in the pocket of villages where I live. I guess it helps they are really close to a town.

I've never seen an app go viral like this in my life and it's not even out here yet, everybody seems to be downloading it through different means, it's insanity. All my friends are already playing it and at work people are sharing info about Australian AppStore. Crazy success.
