Pokémon Go |OT| As in "Go Outside"

Ingress, an older game by Niantic.

Depending of how the people played ingress in your area, there will be more/better landmarks or just shit.

The quantity of pokemon in an area is counted by the triangulation of pokestops, you can see this triangualtions in the ingress app.

My area was full of communists and wannabe artists playing ingress it seems, so the majority of pokestops are shitty political messages and graffitis (even some landmarks are not counted, prefering to use a shitty graffiti that is not even there anymore just 100 steps aways form it). Theres even a gym that is called "Girl with penis" and has, of course, a garffiti of a girl with a penis. Dont know how much time is going to pass with that until nintendo decides to take that gym away.
They also triangulated the thing like shit so the area has very few pokemons.

I still have major questions around this:

- Will Pokemon always be dependant on Ingress data? Or will it eventually develop its own map data? Feels pretty silly for a game much larger to remain gimped by their past game.

- Is Ingress still active, and does it still affect Pokemon map data directly? Can you create new locations in Pokemon using Ingress?

oooh, so that timer is more like a cooldown then?
when its up you can deposit pokemon and collect all the coins?
what if you lose a pokemon in that timeframe between able to collect and actual collect?

Only counts for how many you had at the time of collection. So if you had 3 captured but by the time you collected you only had 2 gyms, only counts 2.

Which is why capturing the gyms and collecting in the morning is best.

I don't think they are taking new submissions in Ingress. I think someone posted a form before to show that they might be taking submissions for new pokestops though. That was pages ago though and I lost it

Just went for a walk in my lunch hour, round a local park.

Saw a gym in my team's colour in the distance... saw it burn down and go Red as I got closer... saw a guy walking towards me with his phone out and cackled wildly, knowing I was about to take it back!

...I love this game.

I'm sure I'm way far behind here. I got to level 5 yesterday and immediately went to defend my honor and claim the tower directly in front of my house. Couple questions:

-Is there a combat tutorial I missed?
-If not, how do you fight?
-If that person is level 18 with 600-700 CP and I'm 5/130 or so, is there any point to actually fighting?

Basically, is there any point to actually messing with that stuff once you're so far behind.

I do not like the fact that other people have claimed my turf.

This game is fun though; I started playing it kind of as a joke/out of curiosity when I saw the foot traffic at the aforementioned hotspot this weekend. As someone who lives in an urban area (Boston/Cambridge), I've actually stopped at a lot of the landmarks that I never knew existed - the little descriptions are nice. A mural depicting a union protest on a railway, the house of the founder of MIT, etc.

Is there a certain speed that you don't get credit for walking? I've noticed that sometimes the bus moves too fast, but sometime it seems I'm getting credit.

Does every level increase get its own animation and item reward? I didn't get anything for level 9, and just now didn't get anything for 13.

Yeah you do but sometimes when the servers are laggy you get your rewards later. Try catching a pokemon or go to a pokestop or something, might trigger it

that changes everything, I got it completely wrong
I thought you had to hold them for 21 hours to get a reward, but obviously the 21 hours are a cooldown
when the cooldown is done, place pokemon in your gyms and then get the reward and start the cooldown again

got it

Ingress is definitely still active but you haven't been able to submit new locations in Ingress for a while now. There are lots of Ingress portals that haven't been turned into Pokestops though.

I don't know if the two are still based on the same database, or they just copy and pasted the Ingress locations into Pokémon and from now on they're separate.

they said they might open submissions again

stopped by the two gyms closest to me on the way to store yesterday and put a pokemon up in each. by time I got back they were both taken over by other teams, but I only got one of the pokemon back. my vaporeon has the little gym icon next to it and still shows up in the defender rewards section. not sure how the hell that happened.

I saw something on reddit that says Evees will evolve into a particular 'mon based on it's current move set. Anyone seen this or can confirm there is anything to it? I've got two Evees, one with Swift and the other with Body Slam and I'm trying to figure out which one to evolve.

Fortified a gym in essentially a private park - I get free entry due to where I work

Im hoping its location makes it a hard one to lose - and I know the garden closes to the public at 6 so pretty much if my Pokemon survives until then im golden to earn the coins

there is a dodge mechanic but if you're a noob like me you might as well not even bother

basically, you tap for a basic attack and hold for a charging attack. swipe to dodge.

Ran into a Jynx and was about to try and catch it when my phone battery died :(

My best Pokemon is something like 301 which isn't great at all when all the local gyms are 700+

You can transfer Pokemon to the professor for extra candy
Thanks, so the general process is - catch 10 of a Pokemon (or however many it takes to get the candies to evolve), evolve one of them, send the rest to the professor?

I don't think that's correct. I got a Jolteon from a Swift and Body Slam Eevie. I'm like 95% certain that I didn't pick the wrong ones or anything.

Ugh, I just realised that each Pokemon has 2 different secondary abilities. Now I have to collect 2 of each species. Or rather 4 so I can evolve 2 of them to the next form.

I'm working at an alternate office location today where there are 15 stops and 4 gyms within 5 minutes walking and we get the first rainy day in weeks. Of course I have no umbrella.

Guess I'll be getting wet.

The tap to recapture your pokeball is absolutely shit. I tested it on 25 pokeballs thrown at different ranges and not 1 came back.

South Florida? It's pouring here.

Depends of the ingress data and parks/lakes nearby.

If google maps says theres a park or a lake (dark green or blue), there more chance to appear pokemons in those zones. But of course you need pokestop triangualting those areas with ingress to make a difference between a shitty pokemon appearing every 30 minutes, or a bunch of them.

I really hope they open soon the option of putting pokestops again, becuase ingress players did a shit job here. If only I had knew in the day.

And yes, it was pretty silly using that data.
Cities like downtown new york you dont even need to go out of your house, you to a much smaller city (downtowns are always better than outskirts) or rural area in any other part of the world, and its shit.
They probably didnt want to waste the time putting packs of pokemon with different probabilities to appear attached to them by hand (and I dont even mean putting them one by one, Im saying treating the map like huge squares so they could put ruaral areas with a lot more pokemons, and random pokestops every few 100 meters, to help them.

I'm loving the game but the damn Pokeball just closing on the Pokeball and doing nothing is getting annoying, I assume it's some connection issue but the last 4 Pokemon I haven't been able to catch.

My wife picked Valor last night when she hit Level 5. Didn't even ask what team I was, just went for it. This might not work out (;

I don't understand gyms... went to one, tapped the button in the bottom right, got into a fight, had no idea what was happening, my Jynx died immediately.
Is there a good guide to gyms anywhere?

Also is it just me or is the game really slow when looking at your Pokemon's stat page?
I'm having trouble scrolling down to the transfer button as it crawls to a halt almost.

Game freezes a lot when I capture Pokemon too.

I just discarded 30 pokeballs, had 280 of them and my bag is full.

I'm getting that capture bug like mad this morning. Fucking hell

Yep, it sucks. Though when it occurs. Give it like 15 seconds. Cause even if it happens, if you were to have captured it with that throw, it will still register. I've had it happen a lot, but ended up having the Pokemon on me after I restart the app.

Sigh... Stuck in a training class at work while at least two lures are up at our campus...
