Pokémon Go |OT| As in "Go Outside"

Cool

Can someone please tell me how you hunt for specific Pokemon in your 'nearby' list?
I tap the greyed-out one so it's the only one showing, then head to any rustling grass nearby but nothing ever shows up, The footprints never seem to go up or down either.
Is there any way of tracking them? I get excited when something new shows up but can never find it.

3 Foot Prints = Far Away, 1 = Close.

I believe what works, is to select the pokemon you want to track. Then turn on the compass mode in the game, stand in a spot and rotate around until the nearby icon sends off a visual ping. Then, you're pointing in the right direction. As you continue to move towards it, it should intermittently continue to ping like that.

Not so sure about that. I installed through an APK and went to the Google Play store later and saw an Update option. I don't think it'll auto-install but it recognized I had Pokemon GO and an update available. Went through fine.
Same experience. Worked fine.
Just went out in my home area for the first time... I live in the suburbs and it's completely barren compared to where I work (central London).

Found a gym and battled, had no idea what I was doing but I won... but it didn't change to my team's colour? Why's that?

Also how on Earth do you track a Pokemon? I picked one that I want to find, and I see some rustling grass in the distance so head to that, but the footprints don't go up or down, and when I get to the grass nothing happens?
Check out the FAQ in the OP, there's a lot of info on all of these questions :)
Opposite experience for me. The servers were awful but now they are great, rarely do I get the hangups I was having over the weekend.
For me, yesterday they were great, almost no issues all day and night. Today they are really unstable again and I've gotten the frozen pokeball most times.

There's just an enormous amount of load. The crazy thing is though it may feel like the issues have already been going on for ages, it's likely we haven't reached critical mass yet. :-/
I'm not able to pull up the shop menu, and, thus, not able to check my gym badge. I've been wanting to take a gym here at work but no point if I can't grab the bonus immediately.

Anybody else have this issue where the shop menu is blank?
All the time when the servers aren't stable. All I can do is keep it open on the shop page until it pops up, and restart the game if it dosen't.
The gym mechanism needs some tweaking imo.

What's the point of taking and defending a gym, when you have to wait another 20 hours to get a reward? That's way too long. I see gyms changing team every hour.
Well yeah, exactly what I mean.
It's too much centered around that one moment you hit the button.
It's designed to reward taking multiple gyms in a brief period rather than defending them for long periods, which in turn encourages other teams to do the same. It's all centered around gyms being likely to frequently flip. If your team does fortify a gym and it stands for a long period of time, your reward for that is simply bragging rights and IMO I'm fine with that.

This approach is more casual and allows a greater number of total people per day to have access to the rewards. Since the primary reward is actually the cash shop currency (which I have no desire to spend actual money on as of yet), I'm very appreciate of the design decision.
You can notice that this isn't really a Nintendo App because the stability of it is terrible. Shit is freezing like crazy.
I have to say that client-side the app is extremely stable and responsive. I wouldn't have known this except for several stretches last weekend and yesterday where it was basically buttery smooth. Everything from the interactivity at pokestops to the frozen pokeballs to the infinite spinning loading ball to lockups/crashes is the result of server-side load, which is a shame because it means there's only so much to be done through updating the game- there's much more to do with the infrastructure.
I also hate how this App can't keep the screen ON all the time. I'm sure some apps can do this. Well this one doesn't. This wouldn't be too bad if the App wouldn't pretty much shut down the moment the screen turns off...
If you don't want to disable your phone's auto-off/lock globally, you can get an app like Stay Alive.
Man...I'd easily pay like 1000 coins for infinite use incubators.
Yes. God. Incubators are like manna to me. I've never had more than 3 at a time.

If you've walked for like 2 blocks in all directions without the footprints either going down or the pokemon completely disappearing, I'd say that you need to restart the app.

My biggest temptation with this game is to buy 8 incubators so I can hatch all of my eggs at once all the time.

That's $10 to hatch 24 eggs though. :(

You can run if you don't need to catch it and value pokeballs.

If your balls are curving it's cos of something you're doing. You can curl them deliberately or you can throw them straight every single time. There's no randomness. Also if you just spam swipe up as the Pokemon appears you will hit it while the camera is zoomed in on it and get an instant hit.

I was trying to get it for the candies to evolve my current Poliwag.

I know how it works. I've done the same swipe in a straight line up every single time. Even when I do it with my left thumb and swipe slightly left the fucker curves a un natural sharp right. Also, it was jacked because my last two great balls made a hit on the Poliwag but just fell to the ground. I would never waste a Pokeball on purpose because I know how annoying them shits are to get.

There's a gym in the middle of my office complex. I checked to see who's in charge of it right now, and it's a player named "TheKikeKilla." Wtf...

It's weird that the game hides all Pokemon nicknames from other players, but there doesn't seem to be any sort of check or filter on Trainer names.

A few Gyms near me are owned by "BIGDICKAMY."

Hawkian, I've typed up a fairly long guide for another site that I don't mind posting here, but I want to check you're okay with that? I know you spent a while on your FAQ and I'm pretty happy just to suggest to add stuff if you want.

can you hit me with a link? thanks

I can't be sure enough to call this misinformation, but in my testing it's pretty inconclusive. I was able to get the "ping" to occur in multiple directions while standing still and continuing to rotate. Based on my understanding of the spawns it seems like it's impossible that all of those directions could have led me to that individual pokemon. Furthermore the pulse occurs whenever something changes in the Nearby list of any kind- a new pokemon appears, an old one gets away, the list positions are switching, something's footprint level changes, etc. The "as you move closer to it, the pings continue" part could simply be the effect of that pokemon moving further up the list.

What does work is this:
If you actually keep the full nearby tracker open instead of choosing an individual pokemon at all (until you get to 2-footprint territory) you can use the relative position of all listed ones to track any individual one.

This still doesn't guarantee you a 100% success rate of finding any 3-footprint mon but it's the more reliable method I have personally verified.

Ya until you get one of those phantom 3 footers that don't follow the damn rules.

Of course I don't mind at all, this isn't even my OT! XD

and the posts that my FAQ are in are tens of characters away from the post limit anyway :P If you send spyro a PM i'm sure he will include a link to it, either to your post here or to the original if that's easier?

Irish Player wanting to join in, can someone help with the following:

1) link to current safe APK

2) If I play, and delete the APK installed app and re download from the official play store once it's live - do I lose my progress?

I think that is all I need to know?

Ran out of pokeballs and I'm stuck in the office. Tempted to buy some more but I'd rather hold out for a pokestop when I leave. This game has me hooked!

Walking through central london today it has begun....

My biggest regret i captured bulbasaur instead of squirtle.
