Pokémon Go |OT| As in "Go Outside"

Did you say your nearest pokestop is 25 minutes away? Where do you live?

I live and work in Chicago. There are 1-2 pokestops per block.

In the village where I live, there is nothing. So it's worse than 25 minutes for me. Have to go to the city to catch Pokemon.

I live in the UK, around 15 minutes from a major city (which has plenty of Pokestops and gyms) - but within a mile radius of my house there are only 2-3 Pokestops and 2 gyms.

This is still better than what a lot of people in more rural areas have to put up with, but I'm disappointed with how they've handled the designation of places outside of major cities. This game relies on Pokestops and gyms to work, and there are plenty of places round here that could have been chosen (I listed them a few pages back), but hardly any of them are used.

Given that Niantic were part of Google and Google Maps identifies nearly all of these places near me, I don't know why the game is so poor at identifying places to assign Pokestops and Gyms to.

I was in the mall looking to buy clothes for myself.. It's amazing how many people are playing this game.
I saw a pack of dudes looking on their phones go inside a sephora.

. Probably the only thing in the world that can make group of guys enter the place.
Shit, best time to ask your SO to carry your bags in the mall.

"I've heard that they had a lot of Pokestops in that mall!"

Should have been a slow rollout throughout the week to add other countries. Now what might happen is the random people that they hooked that don't play a lot of games or know/remember much about Pokemon might throw in the towel.

Definitey, that's what will happen....not the best way to maximize profits by alienating a chunk early on.

They were wise to only release the game in Japan by the end of the month...

Still managed to messed it up though.

I don't blame Niantic because it's hard to prevent this, I don't think they thought that this would be the biggest app launch ever.

Poor IT sysadmin guys :(

I completely blame them and especially their IT guys.
They saw the demand. They saw what happened to their servers. They have seen the news.

Now they still chose to release in more countries when their servers couldn't handle the currently released countries.

This is all fixable and they are working very slow to fix it.

I get the feeling they are avoiding major server upgrades because they keep thinking the user base will die out the next week... They might get their wish I guess.

Went into town earlier. Caught a Hitmonchan and a Kabuto appeard on my nearby list but couldn't find it due to the three step bug. There were three stops pretty much on top of each other lured and 20+ people sitting around playing. It was quite eventful until the server crash.

It's weird to think they had the balls to open up to 30 countries like that. I mean it's not like Pokemon is one of the most popular things around, right? Lol. Billions of people are going to want to play this game and, for the most part, the game is easily accessible (it's free).

I guess Niantic just got super greedy and fell to the pressure of other people wanting to play the game.

Dead everywhere. They added nearly 30 countries and fucked the game for everyone.

Yeah servers are trash right now. I even traveled this weekend. Was hoping to get Pokemon here that I can't get find back home...should've worked on the servers more before adding a ton of countries. Love the game but niantic is making some really stupid choices

Damn, finally made it out of my rural area into the city and the servers are completely dead. Brought the nephew and promised him untold Pokemon riches; oops.

I'm talking out my ass a bit here, but since they're ex Googlers I imagine it's all the servers are on Google App Engine, and so they don't really "upgrade" their servers the way you're suggesting.

They probably need to start running it in different availability zones though, since parts of the world shouldn't be bringing down other parts if built with HA in mind. Granted, we're probably getting into some pretty new territory with just how big and often people have been on.

Doubt that the decision came from IT... Probably from higher above in the food chain.

Were they might get some blame is to fail to convince the decision makers that adding more users would be a bad idea, if of course the problem is actually related to the Niantic's infrastructure running over-capacity.

Where abouts are you? I assume close to Liverpool? I'm in Runcorn there are 2 Pokestops within a 10 minute walk, and that's one of the better places!

This thread needs more wishful thinking right now. What if they're updating the servers because of rollouts in new countries huh!? Huh.. Eh....
It's best to rollout updates afterhours, so that most people won't experience an interruption of the service unless it's a critical update...
