So is it fair to say that had the debt ceiling just been raised without a fit that our credit rating would have remained in tact?

It's obvious that the longer this thing dragged, the worse everyone polled. I guarantee that in two months, everyone will forget the shenanigans GOP pulled and it will be back to jobs.

lol Boehner doesn't believe what he is saying.. He looks like he is truly forcing this speech.

"I've done everything America wants and have put forth a bill that all Conservatives, Liberals, Republicans, Democrats, Progressives, Communists, Socialists, and crazy Dictators would love. Now, let's drink"

Boehner trying to pretend hes the victim in all of this. That its the Democrats that have said no all this time.

Quite the display of blatant misrepresentation of reality and faux outrage.

Oh, here comes the Reagan card......

Without question.

So if the credit rating takes a hit the Democrats have every right to hammer home that the Republicans are hurting the economy.

Doubt they use it effectively but still.

Offcourse.. We wouldn't be at the edge of a cliff as we are right now. It is a Politically created mess.

Who in their right minds would want to go through this mess again in 6 months.

No, that's tough to say.

I mean, if it had been raised without fanfare, then it is possible that credit rating agencies would just have ignored it, but we don't know for sure.

S&P has said that they want $4 trillion in deficit reduction over 10 years to guarantee no downgrade. This isn't to say that a downgrade is guaranteed if the reduction is less.

Obama/Reid figured eventually the GOP would be forced to lead. Instead, they've done anything but, knowing well the public would perceive that as a failure for Obama to lead.

Cynical, disgusting.

And it'll probably work, if the economy remains in the dumps.

What's the source on this and how accurate/fair is it?

If you want to be fair, you should consider that it covers 8 years worth of Bush policy versus 2.5 years of Obama policy. Were Obama elected for another term we don't know if he would issue additional stimulus, get involved in a war, make more cuts, etc (although large cuts seem likely given the current debt crisis).

Him being from the same state as Bush is irrelevant. Him being from the state with one of the best economies in the country is quite an asset. His social views aren't in line with independents, but they've completely abandoned Obama anyway.

I think Obama's base of minorities and young people have pretty much abandoned hope in him, and 2012's election map will look more like 2004 than 2008. Barring some major GOP scandal or Bachman/Palin/Cain/etc winning the nomination, I cannot possibly imagine Obama winning. How can anyone argue otherwise when there is literally no end in sight for high unemployment, companies refuse to hire, and the GOP and Obama are about to sign a spending cut bill that will further harm the recovery.

Obama has to go down as one of the worst, most disappointing presidents. He clearly was no prepared for the job, or presiding over anything outside of a university.

Okay. LOL!

What sucks is there are people, including some generally left-wing leaners, who buy into the idea that it's Obama who won't compromise enough.

How frustrating...

Okay looks like a Yes vote, has been turned into a NO vote? It's at 181 YES votes with 2:23 left on the clock.

Does the time clock actually matter? If they run out of time does it mean anything like in sports?

They can just extend it.

S&P has also walked that back, understandably so given its sheer ridiculousness:

S&P would have never made any announcement at all but for the political drama which it was trying to capitalize on itself.

Okay WTF? Everything started over again. Was the first vote a practice vote?

That was a motion to delay the vote or some other shit. Real deal is now I believe.

C-SPAN has never been so exciting! wish they left the audio on while voting was happening.

So what were the specifics and changes to this piece of shit bill again? Obviously it isn't getting past the Senate, but I'm still interested in knowing.

What is wrong with this bill?

Cuts to entitlements (SS, Medicare, Medicaid), undoes Obama's Student Loan reform (how awesome of them), plus the retarded balanced budget amendment... and I am sure there are many others.

any tax cuts in this bill?
