One interesting thing that I keep hearing McCain talk about is the low corporate tax rates in Ireland.

I don't get this.

I mean, since when was Ireland the international beacon of innovation, wealth, and big business? I'm so confounded by this argument and why Obama doesn't just call him out on it.

In Europe this has been happening for a while, and more are becoming aware of it and it's causing problems, their basically attempting to set themselves up as a type of "Caymen Isles" for business, and Europe isn't particularly pleased with the direction they are taking.

(The recent Banking moves made there for instance)

Diego/Hotline today

Obama (+1)
McCain (Even)

So for today

Ras Obama -1
Gallup Obama -1
Zogby Even
Hotline Obama +1
http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/10/tpm_track_composite_obama_has.php

Summary for today. Dipped from a lead of 7.0 points to 6.6 points today, though it was the second straight day of dropping slightly. Where it stands in three days - so the trackers are all post-debate - will be interesting.

today's polls aren't factoring in the debate, right?
Correct, it's all pre-debate.

It's sad that an intelligent place like GAF can be such a partisan bunch. Fine, lean one way and have your opinions but don't treat either party like they have all the solutions.

The fact that so many don't see a problem with Pelosi and Reed setting the agenda and passing pretty much whatever they dream up should scare people on both sides. Just like I would freak if the GOP was in the same position and wanted to push through religious and anti abortion legislation.

I don't support supermajorities in general but I have to make an exception given the current state of court appointments, Supreme and otherwise.

It is imperative that we do not have a Republican president in the next term.

This race will likely continue to tighten. McCain may even move up to +2 in some polls, but nothing higher.

Do not be shocked.

Obama will still win.

Cool. Me and the wife plan to drive from Chicago; it's a 5 hour drive (without traffic) so we'll probably leave in the middle of night. We were thinking of taking the train, but tickets were $80 per person.

Lamonster or anyone in the know have any advice for parking/getting around St. Louis? I haven't been. Ideally, I'd like to find parking semi-close to the event. The Edward Jones Dome looks like it is pretty close, so I'm hoping there's ample parking.

The Edward Jones Dome is pretty close, but there is a parking garage right on the north side of the Arch grounds. http://www.explorestlouis.com/pdfs/maps/Downtown Parking - August 2007.pdf Don't know if it will be open or if they will close it off for security reasons. But as you can see there are allot of parking garages in the area.

Well, I did ask what horror scenarios you envision and said that a hive-mind ain't generally a good thing but you didn't reply to me. :-(

I think you underestimate how many blue dogs there are. The Dems are never as able to call on party unity in voting/actions as Republicans are.

538 shows Obama dropped in EV too

he was 361 yesterday

today he at 353

a 9 point EV drop in a single day

What do you expect? Single states have several EV. Lose one and it's going to take a chunk. They don't move in like halves or something.

Yeah, since when did Democrats ever fall in lock step with anything? Pelosi has also shown to be a fairly weak speaker, so I'd much rather have her than another Delay.

This is great because it's delivered in such a matter of fact tone.

also, because of the 3% chance it might be true

That would be amazing for the lulz, but somehow, they would still spin it as a moral positive :lol
What is "it?"

Can't watch the vid here at work...

What do you think the GOP has been doing the last eight years? Hence, GAF is excited for a change.

The Bugman from Sugarland was never speaker, just majority leader of the permanent Republican majority.

Unlike Republicans, where the hard ideologoues ruled everything, Democrats actually have a pretty interesting and somewhat functional set of in-party divisions under one roof. Blue Dogs will check the liberal Progressives, New Democrats will swing things, etc. They quibble a bit but it stays pretty civil.

As for Pelosi, why are people afriad of her agenda? Speakers are essentially cheerleaders when their party controls the White House. She, and every Democrat on Capitol Hill will live and die by Barack Obama's choices.

On the topic of Super Majorities and Cooter's question:

While I'm not wholly frightened by this super majority, I would prefer it didn't happen. I'd much rather see the Dems with a majority... but not over Republicans. I'd like them to have a majority over some new party that was even more liberal. Let's shift more towards the Euro-scale of liberalism.

Maybe by the time my grandkids are old enough to vote...

Watched the "baby daddy" vid and uh, I don't think so. Besides not having any specifics that made him sound credible, he kept flashing his myspace URL on screen and talking about trying to start up his "urban rap" career. His vid had 600k+ views so good for him.

Also, I would like to note that Nancy isn't exactly much of a leftist.

One word: Projection.

(Probably the main reason for most of the hand-wringing going on in general)

Definitely fake, but just the thought of it and how they would spin it is full of lulz. Not that an interracial couple is bad (I'm Asian and my wife is White), but I'm pretty sure that having a child fathered by a black guy out of wedlock is pretty high on the "You done fucked up, missy!" scale of Small Town Values™.

Yeah, same. I was really hoping Obama would address it. What about accounting for exchange rates, real estate costs, etc.?

Lamonster and I are going to be riding the metro into the city saturday to avoid traffic/parking/security bullshit. Might be a good idea. I'm sure anybody that wants to meet up and do the same would definitely be welcome.

Well, you might like to note things like that, but then someone might wonder if you're talking about Nancy Pelosi or some random person you know named Nancy.

Ok, let's try this. In this economy and in our situation does everyone agree that we need to dramatically cut spending? If yes, do you think Obama with a supermajority will achieve this? Look at all the damage Bush did and he didn't have a supermajority at all.

I think that's due to the adjustment in the model that made Indiana swing like 20% towards McCain.

Let's ask GAF. Even if you're an Obama supporter how do feel with the likely possibility of a super majority?

It's that bad if Obama can stay as smart as President, as he has been as a guy running for President.

The only thing that scares me is Al Franken. What if he wins and fucks up bad. And I mean BAD! It could make the DEM leadership look worse.

Actually the argument generally is that when the economy is fucked up you spend, you cut spending when the economy is good.

I wouldn't mind going back to the Clinton years. Greenspan did say Clinton was the best republican president we've had in awhile.

Everyone understands why a Republican or a conservative wants to stop a Dem supermajority. No one is/should be arguing that. The question of who a person wants to vote for as their state Senator and their presidential candidate are two separate arguments however. That's not why people vote despite any polling that suggests people like split goverment.
