When an introductory adverbial element seems to modify the entire sentence and not just the verb or some single element in the rest of the sentence, put a comma after it.

Presidents have some impact on the Economy but its not nearly as much as some people like to think. The Dot Com bubble created a ton of temporary jobs and when it burst all those jobs went away leaving one president with a positive job growth and another a negative.
Our country for a long time has been living on credit. Good jobs consistently are exported out of the country so these companies can keep specific profit margins American Citizens be damned. So American Citizens are left to take lower paying jobs and suddenly are finding living on Credit has fucked them.
Well our country living on Credit is coming back to fuck us on a National level now.

If you honestly thought that it doesn't matter which candidate gets elected then I highly doubt you would post in this thread very much or even pay attention to politics. After the last 8 years of Bush the only people who can honestly believe that it doesn't matter who gets elected are the conspiracy theorists who think the world is really controlled by some secret government (ala The Patriots from Metal Gear Solid) led by Emperor Rockefeller.
So now you just contradicted your Obama doomsday scenario? :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lollaserbeam said:Presidents have some impact on the Economy but its not nearly as much as some people like to think.

Well, to a certain extent he is right, and he does concede that the President does have an effect on the economy. It is much less than some people think, however. The President isn't commander in chief of the economy, he's just a guy with a whole lot more influence on it than most people.reilo said:CALLED IT!

Since when are commas used for emphasis? You are never supposed to use commas when you pause or "emphasize" or something like that. Saying something like:reilo said:Uhm, I used the comma properly to emphasize the word "sadly". There was nothing wrong with the usage of my comma.
It's like beginning a sentence like this:

MYTH: You should add a comma wherever you pause. Where you pause or breathe in a sentence does not reliably indicate where a comma belongs. Different readers pause or breathe in different places.

"I was the first to call for a 100% auction on the cap and trade system, which means that every unit of carbon or greenhouse gases emitted would be charged to the polluter. That will create a market in which whatever technologies are out there that are being presented, whatever power plants that are being built, that they would have to meet the rigors of that market and the ratcheted down caps that are being placed, imposed every year.
So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it's just that it will bankrupt them because they're going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that's being emitted."
http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/stevens-advertises-to-save-seat-2008-11-02.htmlThe Hill said:Convicted Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens will air a two-minute advertisement Monday on seven television stations across his home state in an effort to salvage his political career and win reelection Tuesday, his campaign has announced.
The Republican was found guilty last week of seven counts of making false statements relating to gifts. He was already facing the most difficult reelection campaign of his four-decade Senate career.
Without the filter of the media, Alaskans will be able to hear from Sen. Stevens in his own words during this spot, which is four times longer than standard television ads, his campaign said. This unique format will allow Sen. Stevens to speak in greater detail about issues that concern Alaska voters and not just in the sound bites that 30-second advertisements require.
Stevens faces Democratic Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich in a race that was a virtual tie before the verdict was handed down Monday.
A Rasmussen poll conducted the day after Stevenss conviction showed Begich leading by eight points, 52-44. A Research 2000 poll for the liberal website Daily Kos had the mayor of Alaskas largest city up 58-36.
Stevens is appealing the conviction and resisting calls from GOP colleagues to step aside.
The ad will air on seven stations, including two each in Anchorage and Fairbanks, between 6 and 6:30 p.m.
kkaabboomm said:ok, CBS DOES have a new poll out today, but which wasn't properly linked to in an earlier post. the numbers were right, but the link was wrong
Obama - 54
McCain 41
http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2008/11/02/politics/horserace/entry4564135.shtml
and then of course USA Today has their final poll
Obama - 53
McCain - 42
http://blogs.usatoday.com/onpolitics/2008/11/final-usa-today.html
so there we go.
McCain's choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate doesn't appear to be wearing well with most Americans. In the poll, 45% of registered voters rated the choice as "poor" and another 18% said it was "only fair," while 19% called it "pretty good" and 16% excellent.
Those are much more negative ratings than in a USA TODAY survey taken just after the Republican National Convention in St. Paul. Then, 60% called the pick of Palin excellent or good; 38% said it was "only fair" or poor.
In contrast, assessments of Barack Obama's choice of Delaware Sen. Joe Biden remain positive. Now, 60% call Obama's choice excellent or "pretty good," while 38% say it was "only fair" or poor. In early September, the divide was 63%-33%.
Biden has a favorable-unfavorable rating of 53%-32%. Palin has a favorable-unfavorable rating of 42%-49%.
One more historic tidbit from the survey: Obama's favorable rating is 62% -- the highest that any presidential candidate has registered in Gallup's final pre-election polls going back to 1992.

Fifty-seven percent of likely voters questioned in the poll say that Palin does not have the personal qualities a president should have. That's up eight points since September. Fifty-three percent say that she does not agree with them on important issues. That's also higher than in September.
