No flip-flopping from PD or me though! We both got a lot of shit for being Obama supporters who defended Hillary in these threads in the primaries.

(1) It's not a double standard, because there is an actual historical (and present) basis that calls for different standards to be applied. A white judge should be blasted for saying something equivalent, because a white judge has no basis for saying they would be better decision-makers in race-discrimination cases.

(2) Race will and should make a difference. A white man will not be able to understand a race-discrimination case in the same way a Hispanic or black woman will understand it. And the former's understanding will necessarily be deficient by virtue of his lack of experience with systemic and institutional race discrimination. This is the basis for Sotomayor's words, and she is absolutely correct. She should make no apologies, least of all to the racist right.
Can you foresee any subject in which a white man would have a superior perspective, or does this advantage only exist for hispanics or blacks in cases of discrimination?

True enough! It's going to come in handy when Obama is impeached for socialism and you guys have to defend Hillary when she's President. In this scenario Pelosi suffers a mysterious botox-related ailment, minorities threaten to revolt if Byrd is installed, and Biden makes a gaffe so large even He cannot lift it.

Ruling in discrimination cases in Japan, Mexico or some place where white people are a minority?

Obama says international community has obligation to step in, stop genocide

AP News

Jun 05, 2009 07:26 EST

President Barack Obama says the international community has an obligation to stop genocide, even when it's inconvenient.

Obama on Friday was asked how the Holocaust mantra of "never again" might apply to current crises in the Darfur region of Sudan or in Sri Lanka, where the government is accused of shelling hospitals during a quarter-century civil war. Officials deny the allegations.

Obama replied that it is up to other nations to take action to stop genocide. He says his administration is working to end the genocide in Sudan, where Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir expelled humanitarian workers from the country.

Obama was set to tour Buchenwald, a former Nazi concentration camp where an estimated 56,000 people perished. About 11,000 were Jews — worked to death, shot or hanged by Nazi guards.

Before Tiller Murder, FBI Got Detailed Info On Roeder's Illegal Activity
By Zachary Roth - June 4, 2009, 11:56AM

Earlier this week, we raised questions about whether the FBI acted aggressively enough after getting a tip about Scott Roeder, who's been charged with murdering Kansas doctor George Tiller.

And those questions are only getting louder. Last night, the abortion clinic worker who had provided that tip went on MSNBC's Rachel Maddow Show, where he laid out Roeder's various efforts to vandalize the clinic -- starting in 2000 and culminating the day before Tiller's murder -- as well as the detailed information that the FBI received about the incidents.

(video)

In a nutshell, here's what the worker -- using the pseudonym "Jeffrey Pederson" to protect his identity -- told Maddow:

Back in 2000, Pederson saw Roeder supergluing the front and back door locks to the clinic -- preventing anyone from entering or leaving -- two weekends in a row. Pederson gave the FBI the security videotape of the incident, as well as the license number of Roeder's car, which he had taken down. In response, the bureau said the pictures were not clear enough to build a case, but that they'd talk to Roeder.

That may have had some effect, because the worker said Roeder wasn't seen around the clinic again until 2006. At that time, he returned for several months, joining the group of anti-abortion protesters that would gather outside the clinic. Then he went away for a while again.

On the morning of Monday, May 25, 2009, clinic staff showed up to work to find the doors super-glued. When Pederson got in, he replaced the locks, then called the local police and the FBI. He viewed the security tape but was unable to identify the vandal. But on the 28th, he viewed the tape again and was able to identify Roeder. He gave that tape to the FBI.

On the morning of the 30th, the day before Tiller's shooting, Roeder returned. A staff member saw him gluing the back door of the clinic. She chased him away, and he fled, yelling "baby killer." She noted his license number, and told Pederson about the incident. He reported the incident to the FBI, making clear that this was the same person as had vandalized the clinic the previous week. In response, the FBI said that in order to take any action to stop Roeder, they'd need to convene a grand jury and get a warrant.

In the same segment, Maddow also points out that a specific federal law, the FACE Act, makes it a federal crime to intentionally damage the property of an abortion facility. It would appear that the FBI had been given evidence -- tapes, witness interviews, a license number -- indicating that Roeder had repeatedly done that. The FBI also knew that Roeder had been arrested in 1996 for having bomb-making parts in his car, and had past ties to violent extremist groups. And yet, prosecutors charge, Roeder was left free the following day to shoot Tiller at close range in church.

There's also a larger story here, which involves what appears to be a sharp drop off, during the Bush years, in efforts to enforce the FACE Act and otherwise to ensure the safety of abortion providers. Could the general turn by law enforcement in recent years toward a focus on Islamic and environmental terrorism, and away from right-wing terrorism, have played a role in what looks like the FBI's casual response? And is it time to rethink that shift? It's certainly worth asking.

Late Update: Bridget Patton, a spokeswoman for the FBI's Kansas City office, tells TPMmuckraker that after receiving the information about Roeder from Pederson, the office opened an investigation. She declined to elaborate, citing that ongoing investigation. A spokesman with the FBI's national office declined to comment, referring us to Kansas City or the Department of Justice. A message left with DOJ public affairs was not immediately returned.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Job losses slowed dramatically in May, according to the latest government reading on the battered labor market, even as the unemployment rate rose to a 26-year high.

Employers cut 345,000 jobs from their payrolls in the month, down from the revised decline of 504,000 jobs in April.

This was the fewest jobs lost in a month since last September, when the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers caused a crisis in U.S. financial markets and choked off credit for many businesses. Economists surveyed by Briefing.com had forecast a loss of 520,000 jobs in May.

There were still widespread job losses, as most sectors of the economy, including manufacturing, construction, retail, and business and professional services posted declines in jobs.

But there were also some signs of growth, notably in education and health services, as well as the leisure and hospitality sector. Nearly one third of industries added jobs during the month, the highest level of gains since last October.

Still, the unemployment rate rose to 9.4% from 8.9% in April. Economists expected unemployment would increase to 9.2%.

It was the highest unemployment rate since August of 1983. And the official unemployment rate only captures part of the pain being felt by job seekers. More than a quarter of unemployed people have been out of work for six months or more, and the number of long-term unemployed reached nearly 4 million, the highest reading on records that go back to 1980.

There were also 9.1 million people who were working part-time jobs because they could not find full-time work or they had their hours cut back. This was also a record high.

When counting people who wanted full-time work who are working part-time, as well as some of the people who are not counted as unemployed because they had stopped looking for work, the so-called underemployment reading rose to a record level of 16.4%

Obama Calls For Increased Efforts For Two-State Solution
In a press conference earlier today, alongside German Chancellor Angela Merkel, President Obama called for the international community to increase its efforts towards a two-state solution in the Israeli-Palestinian disputes. "I think the moment is now for us to act on what we all know to be the truth," said Obama, "which is each side is going to have to make some difficult compromises."

Obama's Day In Germany
President Obama arrived at Dresden Castle at 2:55 a.m. ET (8:55 a.m. local time), and held a bilateral meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel at 3 a.m. ET, then meeting with an expanded German delegation at 3:15 a.m. ET. At 4:10 a.m. ET, Obama and Merkel held a press conference, and then toured Church of Our Lady at 4:45 a.m. ET. Obama will tour Buchenwald Concentration Camp at 9:15 a.m. ET, and will then make a statement to the press at 10:05 a.m. ET. He will visit Landstuhl Regional Medical Center at 11:50 a.m. ET. He will depart from Ramstein Air base at 2:30 p.m. ET, en route to Paris, France.

Biden's Day Ahead
Vice President Biden will meet at 10:30 a.m. ET with Christine Romer, the chair of White House Council of Economic Advisers, as well as his own chief economist Jared Bernstein. He will have other private meetings at the White House for the remainder of the day. In the evening, Biden and his wife Jill will kick off the 2009 Susan G. Komen Global Race for the Cure weekend, hosting a reception for breast cancer survivors and supporters at the Naval Observatory.

Israel Not Changing Settlement Policy After Obama's Speech
The Israeli government is going against President Obama's call for a halt to settlement activity in the West Bank. "With all due respect to President Obama, and there is respect, and to the deep friendship between Israel and the United States, no foreign leader of another country will set policy in Judea and Samaria," said lawmaker Ofir Akonis, a member of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's conservative Likud Party.

White House To Name "Pay Czar" For Bailed Out Companies
The Wall Street Journal reports that the Obama Administration will appoint a new "pay czar" -- officially called the Special Master for Compensation -- to ensure that companies receiving bailout funds are following executive-pay guidelines. The White House is expected to appoint Kenneth Feinberg, who previously oversaw the federal government's compensation fund for victims of the 9/11 attacks.

Pelosi Says She Pressed China On Human Rights During Trip
Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she has used her trip to China to urge the country's leaders to make changes on human rights. "Nineteen years ago, I stood in Tiananmen Square and unfurled a banner as an individual Member of Congress representing my views," said Pelosi, adding that, "Eighteen years later, as Speaker, I could sit opposite the president of China, the premier, the chairman of the National People's Congress, and express those views to them directly."

Schweitzer, Rendell To Endorse McAuliffe In Virginia Primary
Gov. Brian Schweitzer (D-MT), the chairman of the Democratic Governors Association, is set to endorse Terry McAuliffe in this Tuesday's three-way Democratic primary for Governor of Virginia. Schweitzer's endorsement is being done only in his personal capacity, not as chairman of the DGA. Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell will also be backing McAuliffe.

Palin Warns Against "Fearful Population, And Fearful Lawmakers"
In a speech yesterday in Anchorage, while introducing Michael Reagan, Sarah Palin warned against the use of fear in making public policy. "We need to be aware of the creation of a fearful population, and fearful lawmakers," said Palin, "being led to believe that big government is the answer, to bail out the private sector, because then government gets to get in there and control it."

Nearly one third of industries added jobs during the month, the highest level of gains since last October.
And from a different article:

Payrolls in construction industries fell 59,000 after dropping 108,000 in April, likely as a result of the government's historic $787 billion stimulus package.
Last two months revised down, as well.

Well, we should do it along with telling them there will be economic sanctions put into place if they continue to occupy Palestinian land.

It's time to make up with the Arab world, if that means throwing Israel under the bus...well...so be it.

Inhofe Attacks Obama's "Un-American" Speech -- "I Just Don't Know Whose Side He's On"
By Eric Kleefeld - June 5, 2009, 10:03AM

Mark down Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK) as one of the more outspoken critics of President Obama's speech yesterday in Egypt -- in fact, he told The Oklahoman the speech was "un-American" for calling the Iraq conflict a "war of choice."

Inhofe also blasted Obama for implying that torture had taken place at Guantanamo Bay: "There has never been a documented case of torture at Guantanamo."

"I just don't know whose side he's on," Inhofe added.

Israel isn't holding up their end of previous agreements and continue to show hostility and indifference to the people of Palestine. If their attitude and actions do not change, there will never be peace and they will continue to force Palestinians into pursuing desperate resistance.

We should start practicing what we preach and fix our mistakes, including Israel.

Here is the thing, the world doesn't work like that. Countries never fix there past mistakes, they learn from past mistakes, which Obama is doing. Cutting aid to Israel would just lead to the downfall of are only non oil friend in the middle east which America can't afford. The best way to do this is what Obama is doing, fixings the relationships little by little, give and take. Going anti-Israel and pro-Muslim doesn't solve shit.

As far as I know Obama also has no authority to unilaterally cut aid to Israel on his own volition, so it won't happen. Also, even if he did have that power it wouldn't happen.

It's a shame Israel holds so much political sway here in America and that we choose to alienate basically all of the Muslim world by turning a blind eye to the actions of Israel.

Obama gets emotional about liberation of Nazi camp

610x.jpg

http://ac360.blogs.cnn.com/2009/06/05/obama-gets-emotional-about-liberation-of-nazi-camp/

President Obama spoke emotionally Friday about his great-uncle’s role in liberating the German concentration camp at Buchenwald, noting that for his relative “it was a memory burned in him for quite some time.”

Obama told reporters that as a young boy he learned about the life of his great-uncle, Charles Payne, who had a “very difficult time re-adjusting to civilian life” after his time as an American soldier in the 89th Infantry Division. That division helped liberate the Ohrdruf forced labor camp, a subdivision of Buchenwald, which Obama is visiting for the first time on Friday afternoon.

At a news conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel earlier on Friday, Obama said he chose to tour Buchenwald because “this one has a personal connection to me.” He noted his great-uncle, who is his grandmother’s brother, was in “shock” for some time over what he saw at the camp as a young soldier.

Obama said he wants to “reflect on this difficult history” on his visit because it is a reminder of the “dangers when peoples are in conflict and not acknowledging a common humanity.”

But Obama stressed that he also wants to “celebrate how out of tragedy you now have a unified Europe,” and he wants to highlight the power of “reconciliation, forgiveness and hope.”

White House aides say Obama’s great-uncle will not be on the tour of Buchenwald, but will be joining the President for Saturday’s ceremony in Normandy, France, celebrating the 65th anniversary of D-Day.

I love all the republican shrieking over his speech in Cairo, and the reasons for their rage. What a bunch of pathetic clowns.

I liked when Obama pointed out that the US' role in staging a coup against a democratically elected government in Iran, and the venom from the right that ensued. Because, in their minds, every US foreign action has always been perfect, will always be perfect, and God forbig anyone point out otherwise, and point out well established facts, especially the President. They can go fuck themselves, along with their twisted sense of righteousness and morality. Their only purpose right now is to try to keep the American people as stupid and ignorant as possible.

MSNBC Shrugs About Liz Cheney’s Over-Exposure: “Liz Is A Great Guest”

s-LIZ-CHENEY-large.jpg
s-LIZ-CHENEY-large.jpg
s-LIZ-CHENEY-large.jpg

MSNBC is shrugging off the growing criticism of the extensive airtime the network has granted Liz Cheney to mount a political defense of her father and a political offensive against the Obama administration, with a network spokesperson saying, “Liz is a great guest.”

As more critics are beginning to notice, Liz Cheney is not an ordinary GOP commentator. She is an active spokesperson on her father’s behalf at a time when questions about how to handle the Bush torture program are actively being debated by the White House and Congress. Her appearances are not comparable to those of conventional GOP guests.

Yet as Steve Benen, David Kurtz, and others have pointed out, Liz Cheney has been granted a near-constant platform on MSNBC to act as her father’s chief defender and go after Obama, often without meaningful challenge from either a co-guest or from anchors. They also note that it’s unclear what makes her newsworthy enough, in and of herself, to merit all that airtime.

Asked to respond to the above criticisms, MSNBC spokesperson Alana Russo emailed:

“We often have repeat guests on, from both sides of the aisle, when they are interesting and engaging. There are many people who appear frequently throughout the day on MSNBC, and Liz is a great guest.”

So for now, MSNBC has no interest in directly answering the criticism. The network may yet make a producer available for an interview on these questions.

Meanwhile, MSNBC’s own Rachel Maddow ridiculed the overexposure Liz Cheney is getting (albeit without targeting MSNBC specifically), joking yesterday: “Liz Cheney is still on TV — making news by apparently making stuff up.”
