I'm not sure about Marvel, but I felt that Capcom's roster in UMvC3 was incredible. They put in a lot of fan favorites and cult characters. Wright, Vergil, Strider, Amaterasu, Tron Bonne, Nemesis... yeah there was no Mega Man, but he did come back in a different fighting game. Not sure what other big fan favorite they could add. Perhaps someone from Onimusha (Kaijin no Soki was in TvC) or Dragon's Dogma. Oh yes, Monster Hunter. That damn cat is going to be in the game, isn't it?

Can someone explain why what happened since MVC3? Why can't the xmen/ff4 characters be in this one? :(

Fox own their movie rights, Marvel would have very little to gain from their inclusion. That's at least one of the main reasons, anyway. They've been trying to bury the X-Men for a while now because of it.

If it wasn't for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 being ass and underperforming, a similar thing could be happening with Spider-Man too as Sony own his rights. But now that they're letting Marvel use him in the MCU, plus the possibility of Sony maybe helping fund MvC4, there could be a pretty good amount of Spidey focus.

Check this post-
Marvel legally has the rights to give developers access to their entire cast of characters thanks to Activision's hold on certain franchises (the X-Men for example) expiring back in 2014. The only license Activision has left is the Spider-Man movie tie-in license, which expires next year. This isn't a matter of Marvel not being able to use X-Men & Fantastic Four characters, it's the fact that they don't want to. Marvel's been trying to minimize the exposure of the X-Men & the Fantastic Four in an attempt to lower the popularity of both properties (which would in turn screw over Fox). Within the last few years, Marvel has had a bit of a feud with 20th Century Fox over the properties they still hold the movie rights for (the X-Men & the Fantastic Four). It grew to the point where, after the release of Marvel: Contest of Champions (the mobile Injustice knock-off by Kablam), Marvel imposed a complete ban on all X-Men & Fantastic Four characters in games made after Contest of Champions. One of the first victims of the ban was Marvel Mighty Heroes, whose developer (DeNA) had this to say on the matter.

mmh.png

To clarify what this ban means....
  • As stated earlier, all new games made after Contest of Champions are not allowed to use any X-Men & Fantastic Four characters. This includes the likes of Wolverine, Deadpool, Doctor Doom, Cyclops, Jean Grey/Phoenix, X-23, Storm, Magneto, Super-Skrull, Sentinel, & more.
  • Games made before the ban with active contracts, like Marvel Heroes (the PC MMO), can add whoever they want until their current contracts expires (Ex: Gazillion's existing contract with Marvel expires in 2019).
  • Remasters &/or ports of older games can be re-released untouched (Ex: The Deadpool remaster for PS4 & XB1).
  • The Maximoff Twins, Quicksilver (Pietro Maximoff) & Scarlet Witch (Wanda Maximoff), are only allowed on a case-by-case basis (Ex: Lego Marvel's Avengers). Only their comic book & MCU incarnations can be used in the event that Marvel allows a developer to use one or both of the Twins, & zero references to their X-Men history can be made. They've also been banned from games more times than not, but their inclusion in certain games isn't impossible.
As for the timeline on how this has affected post-CoC games...
  • Avengers Alliance 2: No X-Men, No Fantastic Four, No Maximoff Twins
  • Avengers Academy: No X-Men, No Fantastic Four, No Maximoff Twins
  • Lego Marvel's Avengers: The Maximoff Twins are present, No X-Men, No Fantastic Four
  • Marvel Mighty Heroes: No X-Men, No Fantastic Four, No Maximoff Twins
  • Marvel Future Fight: No X-Men, No Fantastic Four, No Maximoff Twins
  • Disney Infinity 2.0 & 3.0: No X-Men, No Fantastic Four, No Maximoff Twins
I hope this clears things up a bit.

Marvel has a beef with Fox over their death grip on the film rights to the properties. There have been rumors (or has it been confirmed?) that Marvel has out a stop to all X-Men video game/cartoons. By extension that would also mean FF4 but nobody really cares about them getting their own game. But they have had their own issues too. That being said, I still think it is possible for some of those characters to appear. I mean Fox screwed themselves over with FF4 and Wolverine is potentially being retired. But it wouldn't surprise me if they are focusing more on the titles and characters they are actually trying to promote.

It might be good to shake up the characters. Would feel weird to have a MvC game without Wolverine though. I just want Mega Man back :(

Yeah, Capcom's side wasn't really missing that much. In terms of series, the main ones that were missing a rep were only God Hand, Breath of Fire, Monster Hunter, Onimusha, Rival Schools, Sengoku Basara, Dino Crisis, Lost Planet and Power Stone right? And out of those, Monster Hunter and I guess Sengoku Basara are the only relevant ones nowadays.

What new franchises have they had since then other than Dragon's Dogma? I can't see that having a character either, because who would you pick from? Aside from Grigori, the only other major named character is the Seneschal, who doesn't fight anymore.

They have Asura's Wrath which is probably God Hand status in that there's only one game in the series and its only value now is that their main character would be absolutely amazing in a Marvel Vs. Capcom game.

Wasn't Asura around last time too? They just didn't add him? I remember him being rumored.

Cheers dudes.

I still don't think that the focus will -only- be on MCU characters. I can easily see them adding in fan favorites and some new faces like Kamala Khan.

She's pretty relevant in the comics right now so she could totally make it. And I hope she does.

Basically, anyone who's prevalent in the comics or the MCU and isn't owned by Fox has a good chance.

Ok let's do the math on UMvC3 roster.

Current MCU Characters: (11/25)
Ghost Rider, Hawkeye, Dr. Strange, Iron Fist, Rocket Raccoon, Captain America, Dormammu, Iron Man, Thor, Spider-Man, Hulk.

Characters that are out: (9/25)
Deadpool, Wolverine, Dr. Doom, X-23, Storm, Sentinel, Super Skrull, Phoenix, Magneto.

Possible and farfetched character retooling: (8/25+1)
Wolverine -> Black Panther, Magneto -> Vision, Dr. Doom -> Loki, Phoenix -> Scarlet Witch, She-Hulk -> Jessica Jones, Rad Spencer -> Winter Soldier, Nova -> Captain Marvel*, Super Skrull -> Ms. Marvel**

*I know it would make more sense to just go with Sam Alexander's Nova since he's relevant in the comics.
**I know she's not in MCU, but let a man dream.

What about Whiplash, Deathwatch, Wildside, Warblade, Wildstar, Warwolf, Darkhawk, Dreamslayer, Wildmane, Firebrand, Deadlock, Badrock, Shatterstar, Knightsaber, Forearm, Strongarm, Strongshot, Bloodaxe, Ripclaw, Smashbeef, Deadblast, Bulkhead, Deadlift, Ironstag, Rockgroin, and Bob Johnson?

He's in.

That much is obvious, and that's how it's worked with other recent Marvel games (barring legal red tape over the X-Men and Fantastic Four). People seriously worrying over this need to chill.

What are the chances we get a character from EX Troopers?

I'd say it's unlikely, but you never know with crossover rosters. Stuff like Lucas in Smash and TvC even getting localized are good examples of Japan only content making it to the states.

Does Capcom even remember Lost Planet anymore?

At first, it looks like I had the same reaction most have come into this thread to quickly post: "No X-Men! Well...screw that." And yet, on second though, I'm totally pumped for what could be a complete refresh of the roster. Assuming they don't just pallet swap in characters that are 1 to 1 copies (Necali for Wolverine for example, moves and all) it's totally going to change staple characters for the whole series. Although, I'm sure Akuma and Necali will probably still be best friends. I really like the idea of a SF III style roster mix-up.

But in all honestly, I'm just totally pumped at the idea of another Marvel vs Capcom even coming out. I just assumed it would never happen, and I can't freaking wait for the character speculation threads, the frenzy to play as much as possible at public showings, and that first week or two of the game actually being out when people star figuring out stuff. Who's going to be the first "overpowered" Sentinel? Who's going to be the most hated Phoenix-like or Morrigan+Doom like?

CAN'T WAIT.

So a probable over-view of the fighting roster:

Spider-Man
Iron Man
Captain America
Hulk
Thor
Hawkguy
Daredevil
Black Panther
Captain Marvel
Doctor Strange
Starlord
Groot/Rocket Racoon
Loki
Dormammu
Ant-Man.
Wasp.
Luke Cage.
Iron Fist.
Thanos (?)

EX-Troopers-logo.jpg

Bren Turner: the modern age Jin Saotome. He can even have his mech to do a "BLODIAAA" styled hyper (but closer to Jojo styled rush punches). Has punches and kicks, super moves that could easily work as hypers, a jet pack to zip around, a grapple hook (though sadly context sensitive only), multiple weapons. He could definitely work. The only thing that works against him is that he's fairly obscure, Japan only, a bit too "anime" for Marvel, and not even that successful (nor a fan favorite due to Megaman Legend fans thinking EX Trooper replaced MML3)

That's a whole lotta dudes

No X-Men would do nothing to deflate my hype and I can't believe how many of you are just now learning about the current status of X-Men/FF to Marvel.

  • Groot's apparently his own character.
  • I doubt that they'd leave Ms. Marvel out of this, even with her not being introduced in the MCU yet (but she likely will be once Captain Marvel drops).

I hope we get Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan) and Ultron at least. Scarlet Witch would be great too.

I also think Groot/Rocket Raccoon is a good idea as a combination character.

Scarlet Witch is a bit iffy (for the reasons mentioned in that wall of text I made months back). If Capcom legit wants her in the game, they're gonna have to beg Marvel for her.
Capcom & Marvel pls, I need bae.

I am okay with no X-Men, let's get some new characters in there like Ms. Marvel (Kamala), Luke Cage, Squirrel Girl, Spider-Gwen and Howard the Duck.

Lol people complaining that MCU is stale

Mother fucker I'm having a hell of a time trying to choose "only" 30 characters from the MCU. And you know they're going to put in some WTF characters that none of us predict, too.

Don't forget up-&-comers like (the new) Ms. Marvel. Hell, as mentioned before, I wouldn't be shocked if Marvel pulled a Future Fight & used Gwenpool as our Deadpool replacement.
