Mvc2 layout every day.

I hate the S button. It always felt like an insult to players. We are so dumb we need a special button to launch people.

It doesn't take long to spend 5 seconds to figure out 'oh, s. HK is my launcher!'

Sometimes S didn't even have a different attack in a crouching state or close proximity.

MvC3 by a long shot. Dedicated Launcher and misc move/attack button was a great idea.

Agreed. MvC3 let you play decently without high execution on some characters, while allowing crazy high execution gamestyles such as Morrigan, Magneto, etc. Or maybe I just found fly-unfly combos hard, could only do Nova one's.

MvC3 controller for me.

Tatsunoko was okay, but launcher being crouching fierce was awkward and limiting.

As an honest question, why would you find c. HP as a launcher limiting but don't mind a whole button.

C. HP to me leaves s. HP, close HP, J. HP and any other command normals.

S is a launcher, J. S spiked opponents and usually didn't have a different normal for crouching or many (if any) command normals.

S as a button itself is limiting

To this day think it's one of the reasons VF isn't popular and lots of people say it's so hard.

People pick Ryu guy. Ryu guy is actually one of the harder characters to learn.

Fuck this game.

Well, that's the fault of the new VF players who pick Akira instead of the king, Wolf Hawkfield.

Like, it should be obvious to pick the guy who does dropkicks and enziguris and vertical suplexes and Steiner fuckin' Screwdrivers.

(But yeah, I get your point.)

who would replace colossus, psylocke and sentinel for the 3 assists you always pick no matter what

who

The MvC4 future will be full of Rashid fullscreen invincible Spinning Mixer assist.

Along with the Rashid's Theme Remix OST.

No joke. As someone who tried to run Storm in vanilla and who abused Rising Fang in Ultimate I would play the shit outta Rashid. Soooooooo much for me to use there on a team.

Why are we so dumb we need to have a unique assist button for each assist? Why not put even more attacks on them, and make assists another special or command move? Heck, why not 8 buttons? All modern controllers have them?

Obviously, I'm being sarcastic. I think you forget how daunting the game can already be to people not familiar with the series or fighters. There's already a ton of stuff to worry about in the game turning people off, even MvC3 with the universal launcher button.

I'm aware that it's daunting, and the main reason newer players are intimidated. I don't think we needed dedicated assist buttons (as proved by skull girls.)

Just something that's bothered me since the reveal of that button scheme lol.

I say MVC3 but my arcade stick was the soul caliber one and the layout on that stick was fucked.

I had:

L M A1
S H A2

Also I never played MVC1 or 2...

Personally, when it comes to the combat system in games I'm cool with focus on accessibility as long as moves/mechanics aren't getting lost in the process. You can't keep going out of your way to design a game for people who don't even care about your product. There's tons of genres/franchises to choose from to entertain yourself if you're not into the over the top stuff.

None of that stuff matters on a button mashing level anyway.

I'm sure there were many who played other fighters and didn't like having to remember a different launcher for each character in MvC2, and it was a key mechanic. I know I didn't. It kept me from exploring a lot of characters. I was never a hardcore player, and just played it casually for fun, but I think there was a valid reason for moving to a unified command despite the trade-offs, and it wasn't just pandering to those who didn't play fighters at all. I think there are plenty who played MvC1 and 2 and like the change, because it let them worry about other stuff after you pop someone in the air.

Marvel 3 since I play on pad.

I played Zero and Vergil so I had my L2 as an extra L button and my R2 as a LMH button for plink dashes.

L1: Asisst 1
R1: Assist 2
Square: L
Triangle : M
Circle :H
X: S
R3: Assist 1 for when I'm holding L2 with my index finger and can't hit L1

This is how I feel too

Well Guilty Gear has a launch button and that series is the hardest I've ever played when it comes to fighting games.

I want a 4 button layout but I get it the feeling it will be extremely easy this time around.

But you also get p, k, s, HS and a launcher (which is also an overhead).

And those 4 main attack buttons all have crouching, jumping, standing and in some case different normals based on proximity
