Ii really do think they have more in common than most believe....
http://gabrielaknight.wordpress.com/

something about the quinn thing happening and this happening all to close to the same time, I can see why people would believe a conspiracy happening, like having Saudi royalty leave the US days before 9/11, crap doesn't just happen that close not to have people wonder....

Skimming that blog:

To me, the way Zoe’s supporters are trying to suppress (and subtly threaten) those who speak out against her is far more terrifying than any harassment I’ve seen sent Zoe’s way. I’d much prefer random strangers calling me a cunt and wishing I was raped than the sort of creepy reaction those people received.

Definitely my take away from the last few days is that people are afraid to speak out against Zoe. There needs to be at least a 50% ratio of conspiracy gifs to posts for it count as speaking out. Why, there must be 10 or more threads on the gaming reddit front pages that aren't about the Quinnspiracy. Will we ever be free from her reign?

And then:

There’s a reason the only new game I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this year was the new Strider, even though I’d rate it an 8 out of 10 at best: it’s a simple premise with solid execution. No attempts to speak about how the social justice topic du jour, just solid gameplay and enough of a story to string it together.

How do we suffer as gamers. The Social Justice Warriors take game after game from us. I can find only one, the holy Strider, that was free from that poison that is social justice.

My point was more to show there was a context to his tweets that your attempt to provide context to actually distorted. I don't think he feels he's "god's gift" to anything, I think he's just demonstrating the same frustration that a lot of people in this thread--and myself--often feel when stuff like this shitstorm brews up, namely that the gaming community is full of enormous shitheads we want absolutely nothing to do with, let alone spend countless hours slaving over the creation of entertainment vectors for, only to get continuously shat on at every opportunity. But maybe that's just my interpretation.

Yup I am a gamer and self describe as such yet I did not feel Phil Fish was describing me. It seems pretty clear to me he is specifically targeting those that go out of their way to target and harass devs for disagreeing with their views.

Also the jpg quotes were deliberately distorting his point by removing several important tweets from the timeline that are on that German site you linked. If anything that's these past few days all over, jpg collages of deliberately selected communications to drive home an agenda. It's like the mentality that created the jpgs 'proving' the second dGPU in XB1 but to destroy lives.

The fact that people treat "know your meme" as some type of definitive source for anything is actually kinda sad.

I had never heard of the site until I saw it linked in this thread, but it doesn't change the fact he made those tweets, and whether there are tweets missing in between those doesn't change the fact he was addressing people who wouldn't care about him cancelling his projects to begin with. It would be like Michael Bay or Uwe Boll responding to their critics by saying they're no longer going to make any more movies.

Thankfully, most devs are actually nice to people who they're trying to make things for.

Unfortunately all videogame consumers are 1337 hackers who will doxx you without a second thought if you say something disagreeable on twitter.

I know I almost doxxed 8 developers today, how about you?

You do know that "Phil Fish cancels project in anger" is a reference to something, right

You really need to go back and read your post about why the context mattered, when you had the context all wrong.

Cognitive dissonance in action.

It was an attempt at self depreciating humour. He was also making fun of himself for being a giant baby and having grand scale twitter meltdowns. He mocked himself a bunch of times after he returned.

doesnt matter. anita sarkeesian is plenty nice, but i wouldnt want to comb through the death threats and the other shit she's probably received by now.

adam sessler? also a nice dude, the nicest even. the internets response to some of his mild but bold opinions? that he was a completely shitty person.

videogame fans are just patently worse. somehow, this is true. maybe because they're online more than fans in other mediums. maybe its because the core crowd is so heavily invested. maybe its because games can frustrate us more than other things we do for fun. i dont know, but yeah, they fucking suck, they just do.

That's so meta

I did read his other tweets linked on those pages, and I went back and reread them for your benefit. I guess I'm just not seeing his attempt at self-deprecating humor.

The only solution would be to censor the entire internet. Also this affects everyone who's into social media.

So Phil Fish makes a bunch of obscure jokes where he plays a "character" that's an a-hole, and if you looking for the random, out of context Futurama quotes, you can unravel the tapestry and see that Fish is a charming, witty soul.

Or maybe Fish wasn't as charming and witty as he wanted to be, and he crossed that humor line over and over.

Michael Richards, a professional comedian performing comedy in a comedy club was ostracized for his poor attempt at humour.

So Fish tells people to kill themselves -oh no, you don't get it, it's not in context. Well, he fucks up on Twitter A LOT. And he's not even a professional writer or comedian. So I'm not surprised he comes off badly more often than not.

Fish doesn't deserve anything that happened to him, but let's no pretend that it's beyond the pale that people considered him a jerk.

Until they share an opinion that someone does not like

pfft. not even. flappy dude guy just made a game that got popular and wanted to remove it because he didnt like the attnetion. and he was flogged on this very forum for being a whiny baby. oh yeah, he also had pipes in this game that were like the ones in mario bros, and you can probably figure out the response that got from a lot of folks: that he's terrible shitty person.

I've always found that tweet in particular hilarious. Like Jesus Phil do you think anyone actually cares that you cancelled a bunch of "special wecial Phil Fish projects" that literally nobody even knows or gives the slightest fuck about? I've seen five year olds act less petulant than this.

I'm uh... I'm not even sure how to respond to people who think Phil Fish intention with those three tweets was to inform the public that he had three unannounced games that he just cancelled. ... This is like some Sheldon-level WHOOSH here.

I thought the actual issue was that he lived in a country where both the government wanted a major piece of the pie and also that non-government people potentially could have had threatened/kidnapped his family for money, and the attention shit was a cover.

Also, anybody who fails to read between the lines after the fact must also be one of the ravenous haters, and not simply someone walking into this mess due to how loud it has gotten over the past few days

even more legitimate reasons if true. either way, a couple thousand people knew him to be a terrible, shitty person regardless. i mean, mario pipes?!?!?!?!?!? the gall of the man

As someone who knows almost nothing about Phil Fish (Outside what I learn from threads like this and that he made Fez, a game I never played) his "I'm canceling projects left and right!" clearly reads like a joke.

Yes, I'm sorry I wasn't capable of understanding the clever use of sarcasm from a developer prone to frequent outbursts and hissy fits on Twitter. 2deep4me. I promise I'll do better next time.

To be fair, you have to do *research* to read between the lines.

I wouldn't classify it as "a poor attempt at humor". I would classify it as an attempt at something else entirely.

I think Richards was trying to rankle the hecklers by saying the worst thing he could think of.

Here's a bit where Louis CK deals with a heckler by saying she was the product of rape, should get aids, and should have been killed at birth, called her worse than slavery, and then called her a cunt.

And that was a funny bit. Clearly Richards was hoping his bit about lynching "niggers" would go over the same. But it didn't.

People are capable of having both emotional outbursts and senses of humour about it at the same time you know. It's a coping mechanism. It's called sublimation.

You guys realize this is a conspiracy? We're being fooled, you are all sheep being fooled. This is a massive conspiracy and it all goes back to the Government.

This doesn't look much like a real birth certificate.

Are we sure Obama didn't photoshop this himself in order to garner sympathy and make his opponents look bad? I'm not saying that's really what happened, I'm just asking questions. Like a scientist.

The phrase you're looking for is "JAQing off," Cyan.

videogame fans are just patently worse. somehow, this is true. maybe because they're online more than fans in other mediums. maybe its because the core crowd is so heavily invested. maybe its because games can frustrate us more than other things we do for fun. i dont know, but yeah, they fucking suck, they just do.

I've met comic book creators who had to move to different states because of death threats from "fans" (and I don't mean angry rants from 12-year-olds on social media, I'm talking honest-to-god, authorities-involved death threats). One of the cast members of Babylon 5 had to hire a bodyguard for all public appearances after she was physically assaulted by a "fan" at a convention. Harlan Ellison's wife once almost had a nervous breakdown because "fans" kept calling his house when he wasn't home and saying horrible things to her when she wouldn't (couldn't) put him on the phone.

All of these things happened 15+ years ago well before the advent of social media (and I'm pretty sure the Ellison thing happened in the 80s, before the internet was even a thing for most people). There have always been shitty/psycho "fans" in every fandom. This is not a new phenomenon, nor is it by any means limited to video games . Hell, talk to a pro athlete who has had someone spit on him outside the locker room after losing a game.

Shit like this happens ALL THE TIME IN ALL FANDOMS. There has always been a fringe element out there that crosses the line and there always will be. The only difference between now and 20 years ago is that the public has easier access to creators, and we hear about these incidents more often, both thanks to the internet.

It's not fair to tar an entire community of millions of people just because of what a few assholes choose to do. What is happening to Fish right now is awful, but it is the exception, not the rule. Most video game fans (and most fandoms in general) are perfectly nice people.

It couldn't be more obvious that it was a joke. But yes, it's Phil's fault. Okay.

I didn't claim it was anyone's fault, and half-joking aside, I certainly won't deny I'm not the greatest detector of internet facetiousness. Either way the tweets in question gave me a damn good laugh so I suppose that's all that really matters.

. Fish was antagonizing people he himself stated were of low moral standing. That's not really smart. Likewise, the amount of data stolen suggests a lack of effective security protocols too. That's also not fitting of the head of a software technology company.

When developers thought it was a good idea to have a twitter account. A lot of this crap could be avoided if developers would just get off twitter or just leave their twitter private.

Not defending the hack, but fish is a prick. He likes seeing his name on the internet, so he dangles fez 2 infront of people to make headlines.

Put down your twitter account and take two steps away from the internet.
Could have avoided some much of this if people would just get off social media.
Unless you're a shameless fame junkie.

Dat victim blaming. It's gotten to the point where I can't tell if the rampant victim blaming in this thread is real or just sarcasm. Also, did I miss the memo where if you are a game developer you are either not allowed to have a Twitter account or have an opinion about games, whether or not it's popular?

An opinion yes that's fine but most of the tweets he posts are either complaining, insulting, or just attention grabbing and people are sick of it.

Tweets like this for instance

So in what way would that justify what happened?

None at all and I do not agree that anybody should be hacked or treated like this because of it even Phil Fish.

But that people dislike him and him being flamed is not strange, he has a huge ego and is not afraid to show it.

You don't have to follow him or read his tweets. You are free to do so and to complain about his views but don't complain when someone else criticizes you for your comments about him then.
Don't see a problem with using your right to free speech as long as you aren't making racist/sexist/homophobic/transphobic/xenophobic tweets and don't insult or hurt someone on a personal level.

Why won't people just accept the harassment they are given? People are out there dedicating hours of their time and he's just so unappreciative. Like what? He wants to be allowed to have a normal social life or something?

I seriously don't see how that string of posts could be offensive to you.

who cares? twitter is entirely voluntary and has several block features, if you don't like it you can simply ignore it. people tell phil fish to get thicker skin, but if comments about japanese developers and some twitter outbursts are getting to you that you're 'sick of it', you need thicker skin.

INTERNET IS NOT YO LIFE BRO.

He wants to do the job he loves without being assaulted with abuse every god damn day of his life. Wow, what an asshole.

It's stunning to me that you could read that string of tweets and think less of a man for saying those things. Maybe take a look in the mirror, huh?

After complaining about some non-videogame social stuff on Twitter, Justin McElroy (this is like a year or so ago, maybe more) said something that stuck with me. After realizing that he maybe went too far he said something like "Sorry, guys, I was fat in Middle School and now I have an audience."

This is just a theory, but that's really what I see, here. Many of us were just losers tethered to our computers/telescopes/books/NES as kids. Many of the twenty-something-year-old game devs grew up at the same time as me, maybe with similar interests. We didn't have many friends. We got made fun of. We weren't cool.

Boom! Fame. Relative fame, at least. "Oh God people will PAY ATTENTION TO ME NOW!" they probably think. Soap boxes are stepped on, rants given, etc. They don't know what to do with attention. Our people don't know how to react to it with finesse. We never built those skills. Instead we built little robots out of K'nex or whatever.

They're still annoying. They're still jerks sometimes. But I can't help but think that maybe, in the shoes of indie game devs that routinely piss people off, I'd be just as awkward, scared, and confusing.

Because he invites it. It's offensive to me as a game developer because of how inane his behavior is.

Then don't follow his Tweets.

I don't really know much about PF, and it's easy when you don't follow him.
