Convenience is not relevant to get the best possible gaming experience.
We weren't talking about the best possible gaming experience afaik - we were talking about couch play, you commented along the lines of 'it's not hard to plug in a HDMI' - there's clearly more to it than that.

Xbox

  • I own 800+ digital Xbox games
  • I prefer the controller
  • I game share with my son so he can play all my games from his house for no cost to him
  • All my friends and relatives have Xbox
This poster already hit the high points. I don't think I need to say more!

The thread is about the overall experience of gaming, not exclusively about one aspect or another. The talk about plugging on TV is just a tiny almost insignificant thing about gaming.

To you. It's subjective whether or not you think it's objective which I'm sure you will.

What is the best possible gaming experience for you may not be the best for Banjo64 Banjo64 or countless others. People have preferences, and those preferences makes certain things more appealing than others. Some people value things you do not, and you value things that others do not. The world is not black and white.

I'm a big advocate of pc-on-the-tv. In fact, I haven't played at a desk in a decade, now.

But sorry it doesn't compare at all to the smoothness of the console experience. The biggest thing that keeps my pc experience smooth is sticking to steam just to keep things neat. Ie: foregoing options. PC has all these options, but they're.... optional.

If you want a game-playing appliance with the least friction possible, it's not a pc. Don't make me laugh. If you don't mind a little friction for more options, that's fine.

I don't know you but I wait 5 minutes for the download or I play something else while I wait the download. What happens when I lay down on my mattress to play a game on my console but the game has crap IQ, performance, controls, insanely long loading screens plus I can't play online because I didn't pay an extra??

PS5 got Forza 5, Gears of War, Indy, etc on day 1??
lol what argument is that?
Crappy iq? Maybe your brain because games on ps5 and on pro look great. Times when pc version looked vastly better are far over since last gen.
It all looks about the same. Pc just offers more fps.

And gears? Dude I played that on 360 20 years ago.
Fact is. Xbox and pc are waiting for far more ps4 and 5 games than other way around

Cool that worse IQ, performance, controls bla bla etc etc can give a better experience because your preference allows. Enjoy.

Looks great all the same, sure. Sony making the Pro was to give the same experience but charging more money, because they knew people would pay more for the same experience on base PS5. Same for RTX 2060 vs RTX 5090, etc... 🤦‍♂️

But sorry it doesn't compare at all to the smoothness of the console experience.
What smoothness?? PC can run almost everything at 4k/120fps on TVs. What do you consider more smooth than that??

See. I knew you would ignore everything to keep up your dumb ass PCMR narrative. I'd ignore you if I didn't find your pathetic one note existence entertaining.

Ignore everything what?? Like ignoring everything better about playing on PC because just pressing a button on controller is more convenient on controller so this automatically makes the console experience better overall?? The hypocrisy.

PC. I prefer an open platform with as little corporate meddling and censorship as possible. Steam is basically the limit of what I'll tolerate, and even then it's pushing it. I'm a fan of GOG which carries the torch of, "you bought it, you own it, so do what you want with it." Mods, baby. You need those.

I don't think I'll ever buy another branded console, basically ever again.

You still choose to ignore the fact that I specifically stated that it's subjective. Yes some people will value simplicity/ease of use more then 4K/240hz/Path Tracing or countless other things that PC allows you to do. Your narrow world view shows.

Dude you have got to be kidding me. Maybe take one more pass over my wording, there.
I wouldn't ever expect to have a honest conversation with him. He has always and will always pick and choose what he wants to respond to and choose to interpret things in a way that fit's his narrative.

He will probably ignore your post and or try to gaslight you into thinking you were talking about something else.

PlayStation, but not because I think it's necessarily the best but because I've just always been partial to it. Growing up I've had a myriad of consoles handheld and home.

Nowadays I only stick to my PS5 (which is the only one I currently own) since I can't justify dividing my time between multiple consoles. TBH if I could afford a high-end gaming PC and future proof it for a few years I would in a heartbeat.

So what is more "smoothness"??

Do I need to repeat my self?

"Cool that worse IQ, performance, controls bla bla etc etc can give a better experience because your preference allows. Enjoy."

But if you come here saying that we can't turn on a PC with a button/key press or it is not simple to plug an HDMI cable from your PC to your TV, I will call your bullshit. 🤷‍♂️

So you call the "more "plug and play" while having more crap everything else" more smoothness overall ??? Funny.

Yes* it's called a tradeoff. A very huge, major, enormous one. I quite enjoy pc too but I can fully appreciate both sides of it.

*I'm just gonna give you 'worse everything else' because that's beside the point.

For what is a mostly American forum this is a damning indictment

If you suggested things would get this bad back in the 360 days you'd have been burned for at the stake for heresy

If this is how bad it is in America, just think how bad it is in Europe and Asia

Almost 50% PC......day and date Xbox titles, why would anyone want a console at all.
If anything im slightly bemused the PS is beating the Switch by this much.

PC because my RTX 3080 is STILL supposed to provide better \performance than the most graphically advanced console on the market (PS5 Pro).

That, and key sites letting me get games at a discount, the massive amounts of free game giveaways on online stores, the severe lack of PS5-only games, Game Pass on PC as an option, and so much more. PC really is the best if the price differential isn't a deal breaker.

That's not a fact. It highly depends on what games you value more. You enjoy the Sony exclusives, while I (and others) spend more time on titles that never go to consoles or get delayed. Recently I have played a ton of Stellaris and Satisfactory, the former has a nerfed ancient build available on PS4 and the latter is simply not on console.

How much did the 3080 cost?

It changes with the times, typically I go Nintendo but lately it's been Playstation. Too many games have been missing Switch releases. Hoping that will change with Switch 2. I'll still buy most indies and all of Nintendo's first party games, but they are missing the kind of 3rd party support needed to be my main platform, and the industry has chosen Sony as the dev platform standard.

Playstation = the games are the best for my old ass. FF7 changed my life about gaming and just so many greats since. Gran tursimso is fried chicken fam.

Nintendo = gay childish games I wanna and will play soon with switch 2. But I'd never admit it to my family. There's no chance I'd play dat shit in public.

Xbox = Lol what is an xbox. Always been a fan but the only reason 360 did so well, IMO, was because of online gaming. The shit back then was PS had shit servers and xbox was way better because err MS.

Pc = can't get away from it cause porn machine. Apart from that I'm a fucking huge fan of grand and normal strategy games and PC is by far the best platform for it and I've put so many fucking hours in them games. Please tell me if you'd like to play HOI2 Doomsday it's one of the best games I've ever played.

Edit: no BS I've had almost full bottle of vodka ( damn washing machine drank 1 glass) but anyway take my opinion as you'd take a line.

Good games

Out of the ones you listed it's Switch.

Actually, and I'm ashamed to admit it, it's been mobile..

You know what's ironic- most game that are only on PC can be played on any old laptop.

That's one of my favorite things about PC, actually. But ironic. Playing vampire survivors on your $1000 PC.

PS5.

Hooked up to my main TV in the living room, and PlayStation is where I have my largest library of digital games.

PlayStation
  • family share with my kid so we can multiplayer digital games.
  • 77" OLED and Atmos 7.2 surround
  • a couch after a long day of being in a computer
  • physical games which are cheaper
  • physical games which I can sell
  • cheaper entry than PC gaming these days
  • not everything is crossplay and most of my friends are PS gamers now too
  • It ticks my dad and brother off I don't play on Xbox lol

PC—because I love strategy games (nothing beats a mouse and keyboard), and of course, for emulation. I own all the consoles (haven't picked up the Switch 2 yet) and have xBox Game Pass, PS+, and Nintendo Online. On Steam, I own over 4,000 games (and nearly 1,000 on GOG.com). I'm also often on the MiSTer FPGA or Raspberry Pi 400. Too many ways to game...

Just to add—the word "pool" in the title really threw me off. I was expecting to see more pictures of pool floaties. Now that I think about it, that might be why I clicked on the topic... I see what OP did there.

PC. I have enjoyed consoles for decades and actually prefered the closed environment as PC can feel overwhelming, but I ended up actually wanting more freedom. Better-priced games with no online fees, being able to have more control over frame rates, resolutions, textures, etc is fantastic to adjust, if needed, to what I prefer. Hardware seems to last longer with the exception of missing some features like ray tracing or frame gen. Community mods that can add stuff to a game or those that actually fix performance of games.

Building a PC can be like 4x the amount of a console upfront, but in the long run with cheaper games, more places to buy them, no online costs, free games from the likes of Epic and Twitch, bundles, more sales etc I genuinely think it can work out cheaper than console (again, in the long run). If a game is £70 on console, its usually about £50 on PC and that tallies up quickly.

I like that a PC can do everything related to gaming and outside of it. There are very little restrictions on most things. Its a multitasking giant.

Was Switch 1, now Switch 2.

Of the three I like Nintendo's first party games the best, and since I travel for work, it's just more convenient to chuck my Switch 1/2 in my backpack and take it with me compared to my PS5.

PS. It really all boils down to, it provides the most bang for the buck. No question. It strikes that balance of having a history of solid hardware, more than acceptable performance, and plenty of unique games and 1st party stuff, all for a descent price. Besides PS3 launch price, it's ALWAYS delivered without breaking the bank.

PC
DLSS 3/DLSS 4 producing better image quality than consoles
not having to play with vsync latency
having proper VRR LFC (it's 2025 and ps5 still can't do this properly)
being able to cap framerates below maximum refresh rate so that you get best possible latency
being able to cap framerates at arbitrary framerates
being able to play with almost minimum possible latency thanks to Reflex making almost every game universally (yes you can inject it to any game) snappy to play
being able to play games from iconic old consoles through emulation while also being able to enhance them graphically (and you can even use lossless scaling to get them to run at a smoother framerates without touching base physics framerate now)
being able to enhance games by mods
euro truck simulator 2, minecraft, terraria, heroes of the storm, payday 2, garry's mod and such games that play optimally on PC
DLDSR (superior supersampling compared to consoles)
being able to play doom dark ages with keyboard and mouse (although i think it is pretty petty at this point that they refuse to add keyboard and mouse support for this game. freaking cod has keyboard and mouse support on consoles despite being a competitive game. what the hell?)
being able to upgrade most games to better framerates or higher resolutions by simply having a better CPU and GPU
having a large gaming library that grows itself for free thanks to epic games giveaways and prime gaming (that will also benefit from all the possible improvements i listed above)
better multi tasking while achievement hunting
game pass
being able to record at arbitrary resolutions and framerates instead of using presets
path tracing
no game can force my 144hz screen to refresh at 60hz
having access to superior anisotropic filtering and being able to use 16x anisotropic filtering for almost free in almost all games

PC
  • Most versatile platform, with the most robust backwards & forward-compatibility.
  • I can game on a handheld, use a mini-pc with Steam Big Picture on a couch, and/or a desk with a powerful rig...all of which let me share the same library.
  • Emulation has gotten great, it's easy to setup, and AI upscaling improves textures for PS1-PS2 era 3D games.
  • Games are regularly cheaper (sometimes less than $1), and more storefronts means more often content is on sale when you want it.
  • Works with any gamepad, and I can customize them easily.
  • Genres that only play well on a mouse/keyboard.
  • Steam is a better storefront than anything else available, and easier to discover games.
  • GoG preserves old games, and DRM-free is at least an option for some games as the industry moves digital.
  • Being able to turn on or off whatever effects I want, and mod games.
  • No pointless sub fees for features that should be free, or I can self-host for free.
  • Less censorship
Stuttering in some AAA/Unreal games and GPU prices are the only downsides at this point.

PC

No point in the others since it has the same games as Xbox and the PlayStation exclusives are mostly timed exclusives.

Nintendo I only really like Zelda and I doubt they're making ones like Majoras Mask/Ocarina of Time/Twilight Princess again.

PC is also something I'll almost always have it on whenever I'm home as well as doing and watching movies/youtube etc. where as consoles usually gets left in the dust after a game.
