Poor Kojima...

He probably scoffed and acted bemused because E33 was winning every award, not because his game didn't win any. If you were sitting through the Academy Awards and the same movie won every single award, by the 11th win all you can do is shrug and clap.

Knowing he is Japanese, they show respect, win or lose.

Comments like this tell me that no one actually plays DS2.

Because anyone who played the shirtless bro final boss battle playing rock guitars in a street fighter showdown would know the game is anything but pretentious 🤣
People who played it, said their praises or dissapointments and moved on. When someone goes out of the eay to call them pretentious, walking sims etc is when you know that people didnt actually played them.

One success doesn't prove shit. Its all about sustainability, and if you're taking half a decade between projects you're playing a very dangerous game as popular tastes and culture can move on a long way in that time.
Indeed, one success doesn't prove anything... But I'm referring to Sony, whose generation was so clumsy and lacking in good games... Nothing compared to their previous eras.

If DS2 is more of the same so is KCD2.

I wonder if thats how people felt about ROTK's sweep.

Sony had plenty of good games (except for spiderman 2, that was bad I don't care what anyone says), just not great ones. A lot of safe sequels, while not bad just not as amazing as when the predecessors to these games came on PS4. We shouldn't have 3rd parties sometimes outputting better graphics on the PS5.

Kojima is making games to be recognized as a great movie director.
Kojima could easily get the funding and backing to make a movie if he wanted to do it. He's well known enough that he would bring an audience with him, moreso than plenty of early career film directors.

I'm surprised he hasn't gone ahead and done it, tbh.

Sure but it's safer to be an oddity in the video games industry than to completely switch jobs and be exposed to a wider array of potential criticism.

Kojima is one of the biggest name in the gaming sphere right now, you won't see Spielberg trying to be a singer or Nolan being a dancer.

He's trying to push the boundaries on the medium of video games but he's gone from creating blockbuster with Metal Gear to making some meta over the head messages that are working well in movies but not so well in games.

You won't like a 30 hours Nolan or Shyamalan movie so that's where it's not working right now.

God damn ... that bad?
Nah, that's hyperbolic. KCD2's combat, while clunky, is at least better than the combat in modern Elder Scrolls game because you have at least proper hit feedback. There's no game that has worse combat than Witcher 1.

That being said, Dark Messiah still has the best first-person melee combat.

Actually I disagree. I think that this was quite a personal project for Kojima and so it'll have been hard for him not to feel disappointed by the response.

There's a .gif floating around showing his and Woodkid's reaction, and its very genuine and natural.

As I've been saying, the narrative surrounding the making of E33 made it unbeatable this year, however in 5, 10 years from now few will remember how much it allegedly cost to make, what the sentiment in the commentariat was about the industry in general in 2025, etc.

Its like who remembers what movie beat Scorcese and Goodfellas at the Oscars in 1990 ! As Kojima himself has observed, short term reception is often wildly inaccurate in judging historical worth.

I mean look at the combat.

This is what people enjoy?

I think the issue with KCD2 combat, one that took me some hours to come right with it, is that its far more batman arkham combat than it i action rpg/combo/hit scan slashing combat.

And the issue is it presents itself as the latter. You see all the directions and the sword your instinct is to mash stab and try get around the enemy like you would a souls game where instead its very much an animation driven combat system.

You parry then hit, or you oppose direction and reposte, if you going in for an offensive attack you have to complete a combo, its all animation driven and it does take some time to adapt to it.

Over all the combat is fine, its not great but its also serviceable... its no worse than say witchers 3 combat which wasnt animation based but also had its rhythmic combat that presented itself more as again a souls like combat
