But cern is firing particles at each other not photons.
I'm no astronomer or strong in math. But two objects travelling at 0.8 of light speed and impacting is a much greater release of energy than a 0.8 sol hitting an almost stationary object.

The linked article is not talking about photons, which are massless and travel at the speed of light.

Why would it open a gate to hell? I feel like there are far more violent things going on in the universe, smashing a few atoms is the least of our worries.

But it does - the linked article talks about particles that already slam into Earth's atmosphere at 99% the speed of light. And those collisions are significantly more powerful than what we can replicate on the LHC.

Most of the time they are firing protons (and, cough, protons are particles), rarely ionized (stripped of electrons) atoms. Again, nothing that doesn't already happen in nature.

There is a lot of misconception about relativist effects, I'll probably create a separate thread about it.
 
The LHC makes me uneasy/morbidly fascinated in the same way wandering black holes do. Out of all the possible doomsday scenarios, mankind tearing a hole in spacetime allowing eldritch abominations access into our plane of existence or creating tiny black holes that descend into the depths of the earth and start feeding on our planet's core is both interesting and terrifying.
 
While shit like this annoys me to no end, I truly wonder why the hell we even divert resources to this kind of project when they can be used for more fruitful scientific endeavours like carbon sequestration.

It's way cooler than a boring old nuclear apocalypse or global warming. I'd rather by devoured by Others from the damned dimension.
 
Maybe the pope should spend more of his time keeping all those paedo rapey catholic priests under control than worrying about fantasy realms.
 
I liked it more when the catholic church would mission itself to educate against islam and mohammed and his false prophecy and use our holy book (the book of luke from the holy bible) in their quran. When I read the end times in revelations I read into it how islam took the gospels of Jesus and used it for war and hate. Jesus was a Rabbi, people forget it was the people of rome who declared he was christ not himself, and it all happened after his death. Mohammed was a merchant. Who couldn't read. Never was in a jewish temple, never was in a catholic church. And arabs declare him the true word of God. Warship him for removing the jews and still making arabs half jewish.

there is a post-2k form of Christianity that is kind of this way. in North GA i have seen some rapture evangelical flyers at county fairs and such with techno theories about the apocalypse. apocalyptic Christianity by people that have seen the Matrix and stuff. the antichrist using holograms to fake the Rapture is one such theory they entertain. demons being entities that live on another dimension and sometimes appear or effect things in ours, well that is just an old thought as well, given the framing of modern quantum physics-style pop science.

pop science has in a way influenced modern religion. stuff like multiple dimensions are a popular theory, accepted as fact, and portrayed & normalized through tv, film, and media. demons and spirits have long been imagined to be non-corporeal. the ideas of an extra-dimensional being that under certain circumstances enters our own dimension is often entertained & portrayed in popular media.

No way I'm going to spend eternity locked up with a bunch of PC Wokestapo. I'll take the crowd of guys smoking and joking around the giant coffee urn, just like at the Lutheran church I grew up and went to Sunday School at.

The Pastor and the Elders were like the Founding Fathers compared to the lefty inquisitors of atheism. Not going to find much wide-ranging discussion among the atheists. They demand strict conformity.

It is no library of alexandria. Although the maps of the civilized world from the era of the catholic church would be interesting. In theory they also have all the documents of the art commissions there. So they have the payments given to michealengo and stuff the construction of the churches info. Oh and in their databanks, the vatican keeps records of all the registered catholics of all over the world.

My mom registered me in uruguay, and the church found me here in vienna asking ofcourse for my indulgences. (I pay them but only to Uruguayan churches).

Hell is self imposed exile from God's love, nothing else. Just you and you alone because you chose to be alone. Hell ain't some pitchforks and monsters, God would never do that to his most beloved creation. Hell is just you refusing God's embrace. God can't force you to love him, so when you stand before God and refuse him then you just go to hell, a place where he isn't. That's it.

That sounds nice, but unfortunately it directly contradicts Jesus' words on the matter. Fiery furnace, weeping and gnashing of teeth, eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. And you have Revelation with "the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever, and they have no rest, day or night."

You can make up your own doctrine, but don't call it Christian. Divine grace, and divine wrath. You have to account for God's perfection in both.

It could certainly be eternal fire, but I think the point is that hell is eternal suffering from not being with God. The pain is from the seperation. People choose hell by not wanting to love God and committing mortal sin in life.

There have been mystics and Saints who have caught glimpses of hell and what they say seems to indicate an unimaginable horror which seems to corrobrate the point of hell as a literal place of flame and gnashing of teeth. Though, I don't think it is possible to truly understand what hell is like, as it is a place reserved for the dead and damned. Perhaps it isn't like anything we know and understand, maybe there is no fire, maybe there is. We don't know exactly what it is like.

We don't know exactly, but to say we don't know anything is to wave away the words of some pretty high authorities.

But the main thing is to avoid any of it!

I don't want to get into a theological debate here but as someone who has a master's degree in Theology it isn't as simple as you make it.
