Porsche just announced the 911 GT2 RS, a monster of a rear-wheel drive sports car with nearly 700 horsepower powered by a 3.8-liter twin-turbo engine. But the announcement didn't come in Geneva, or Detroit, or even New York. No, the new Porsche was unveiled in Los Angeles, on the Electronic Entertainment Expo stage. Yes, Porsche just dropped a car at E3.

E3 isn't the first place you'd expect one of the world's biggest sports car brands to unveil a new car like the 911 GT2 RS. But then again, until this past year, you couldn't drive a Porsche in most of the top-tier racing games because of an exclusive licensing deal with Electronic Arts. Now that that deal is dead, Porsche is showing up everywhere in the video game world — including the newly-announced Forza Motorsport 7.

The wording makes it look like the gaming world was waiting for Porsche to finally get out of the EA deal and show up in The Witcher and Minecraft.

... I kinda prefer RUF to be honest.

EviLore, what colour are you getting?

Edit: the Autobild article says it's limited to a 1000 units, which are already sold.

Yep, that's a 911.

Most likely runs horrid with all the sports stuff like the GT-R Nismo
Pay extra money for track car that not suitable for the road

The 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS is the very first car ever to be publicly unveiled at a gaming convention: http://www.thedrive.com/news/11392/2018-porsche-911-gt2-rs-revealed-along-with-forza-motorsport-7

Last seen pounding its way around the Nurburgring, most would've pegged the Porsche 911 GT2 RS to make its official debut at one of the big auto shows such as Frankfurt or Detroit. The Electronic Entertainment Expo video game trade show (better known as E3) in Los Angeles is not an auto show. At least not yet, anyway.

At Microsoft's big E3 press briefing today, Forza developers Turn 10 have unveiled the next installment of their flagship circuit racer/car encyclopedia, Forza Motorsport 7. Oh, and they also finally took the wraps off of the most powerful road-going Porsche 911 ever made, the GT2 RS. This makes it the first car ever to publicly show its face not at an auto show or in a manufacturer press release, but on stage at a gaming convention. Times are a changin'.

I get that it's an amazing car, great sales. But it's sold out. What is the point in announcing a sold out car.

Is that just the standard for the industry now?

No, the 2018 model is not sold out: http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-ne...sche-911-gt2-rs-2018-pictures-specs-and-info/

You can tell the new 911 GT2 RS is an extreme race car for the road, rather like its predecessor; the huge vents in the bumper and front wings, massive brake calipers and rear wing make sure of that. Performance specs are a bit of a mystery, but Dan Greenawalt from Turn10 said the GT2 RS ‘features the most powerful roadgoing 911 engine ever made.'

We can safely expect to see the new GT2 RS at the very least match the Turbo S for outright pace in a straight line, despite all of its power going exclusively to the rear wheels.

Tech specs beyond that are still unknown, as is the GT2's release date, but with the new GT3 having only just gone on sale, we may not see this one hit the road until 2018.

uh, you non car guys are hilarious...

Yup, that's a 911. Just as ugly as they have always been.

ZOMG so ugly

Porsche make a lot of money from limited edition made only for their hard core fans. like a super deluxe version of Final Fantasy that you guys salivate over. These limited quantities only get sold to prior Porsche owners, and usually at absurd marked up prices. And guess what? The prices appreciate as the cars get older.

You can't afford one anyways, but Porsche would like you to know that you can afford a nice Cayman or base 911 and would you like to visit the nearest dealer to test drive one?

It's the same as any other halo product, the goal is to drive sales of the lower end volume products.

Yes, I just used the phrase 'drive sales' when talking about a car company.

Driving one of these and putting your foot down on the pedal is an experience of its own. It's hard to fathom just how fast these things move, and how amazing they sound until you actually drive one.
