I thought this was rather amazing. This guy builds his own portables.

He has an interesting interpretation of the word 'portable'. To me, something portable can be placed in the average-sized pocket. You'd need a backpack for some of these suckers. :lol But I do admire his engineering and technical talent - it takes a ton of time and work to make those things. I can't say he has an eye for design though..

Oh, and, sell y0ur PSP reservationz itz all 0ver!

I like them all except the portable PS2. That just looks UGLY. :)

GBA and PSP are not portable SNES and PS2. Can't play all those games on the handhelds; just the ones that ported.

Portable SNES, Genesis, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Atari ST, Wonderswan Color, Neo-Geo Pocket Color, Commodore 64, TG-16/PCE, NES, Master System, and Game Gear all in one:

Now if only it didn't run PalmOS, maybe then I'd 'tap' that 'wave'. :lol

What's wrong with Palm OS? Never had a problem with it; I've currently got two devices that run it. (Phone and Zodiac)

It just hasn't kept with the times. I've owned four PalmOS PDAs in the past, and while it was once THE portable OS, PocketPC has just surpassed it in terms of hardware support and integration with Windows. It's like running a miniture version of XP that syncs up seamlessly with your desktop version, without the need for any additional programs. Want to transfer stuff to your PocketPC PDA, just connect it and an entry pops up in Explorer and you can browse it as you would a drive. I can dump all kinds of standard Windows files over and know that my Axim's going to know what to do with them. I used to love PalmOS, but the new incarnations of PocketPC just blow it away IMHO. That and there's alot of great looking PocketPC games out now that would be great played through the Zodiac's design.

Interesting. I haven't really messed with Pocket PC, but maybe I'll think about buying one down the road; I was thinking of getting another PDA next summer anyway.

The synch system with the Pocket PCs do sound nice, but it really isn't a big deal to me; I just download Palm programs and they install automatically as soon as I synch up. Transferring files is also no big deal since my laptop has a SD card reader, so I can insert and drag and drop files right to the card.

What are the best Pocket PCs out there? Is there anything new that will be significently better coming out in the next year? I am pretty happy with my Zodiac 2, and I see that the Wi Fi adaptor was just released, so I'm good to go for a while.

Hey what's up Lyte Edge? How've you been man?

That looks like a very fascinating handheld you posted. I own a GBASP and I'm on the verge of buying a DS. But this little Zodiac device has grabbed my attention. That thing looks amazing.

Lyte Edge if you don't mind, I'd like to take a moment of your time and have you tell me a bit about the Zodiac and how well emus run on it. So here's a list of questions I have:

1)Can you tell me how accurate and fast games for the following system emus run on PalmOS for this Zodiac handheld?

A)SNES(a port of ZNES or Snes9x?)
B)Genesis
C)Gameboy/Gameboy Color
D)Neo Geo Pocket
E)TG-16/PCE
F)NES(is this a PocketNES port?)
G)Master System(is this a port of DrSMS?)
H)Game Gear(same as above?)

2)I notice you didn't list Gameboy Advance. Is this because there is no GBA emu for PalmOs/Zodiac? Is there a Visualboy Advance emu for Palm Os? And if so, what is the speed like? 100%?

3)What about Mame? Kawax? Final Burn? Speed? Accuaracy?

4)What's the battery life like on this Zodiac? 6 hours? 8? 10? 12? Battery life is a key factor. I would need to get at least 6 to 7 hours continuous play on the Zodiac, mostly playing games , for me to consider it.

5)Screen quality: What is the screen quality like, especially compared to the Nintendo DS, or even the PSOne TFT LCD screen? Does it blow away anything else? And can you adjust the contrast and brightness on the fly?

6)Neither this Zodiac or the Nintendo DS would put a hole in a my pocket if I bought one. So based on that, what would you recommend between these two handhelds? Keep in mind, I was considering buying a DS to play GBA games ONLY! I have *NO* intentions of playing any DS games, as none of them interest me whatsoever(OK maybe Mario, since I've never played the N64 version). But I can't get over how beautiful GBA games look on it. They're gorgeous.

So please let me know dude. Thanks in advance :)

You can't go wrong with Dell's Axims. I own a 3Xi myself - it's thin, powerful, has integrated 802.11b support, an SD reader, nice screen, and judging by the several times it's flown out of my pocket and smashed into the floor only to still work perfectly, it's built very solidly. The newer models are even more impressive, and have very powerful processors. Their prices are pretty good as well, considering what you get.

tedtropy. This axim thing doesn't appear to have sufficiant game action buttons as well as a funtional D-pad, whereas the Tapwave Zodiac does. Wouldn't the Tapwave Zodiac get the edge in this case, if you are going to be using it mainly as a handheld gaming device? I wouldn't want to play Streetfighter with those buttons...

SNES, Genesis, and NGP all run under the same emulator, called "Little John Z." It also emulates NES, TG-16/PCE, GB/GBC, and Wonderswan Color The Tapwave port is still early, and it depends on which system you use for performance. You can pretty much get 100% speed with sound turned OFF on SNES, Genesis, and NGP. With sound on, it varies by setting and by game; most SNES games seem playable enough with sound on, but Genesis games can slow to a crawl. Speed should get better with updates, of course. LJZ's Gameboy/Color and NES support is excellent, so you don't need to bother looking into other emulators.

I didn't like the TG-16 support in LJZ, so I've stuck with an emulator called "Dream Engine." It emulates a large number of TG-16 and PCE games very well, sound is a little off in certain games, but great for the most part.

With Master System and Game Gear, I use an emulator called "Gizmo Ultra." Both Gizmo and Dream Engine are from the same developer, Kalemsoft. It's pretty fantastic and I can't think of any games that won't run at the moment.

You do have to pay for Gizmo and Dream Engine, but LJZ is completely free.

2)I notice you didn't list Gameboy Advance. Is this because there is no GBA emu for PalmOs/Zodiac? Is there a Visualboy Advance emu for Palm Os? And if so, what is the speed like? 100%?

AFAIK there are no GBA emulators for Palm OS. There was a company with an emulator called "Firestorm" promising perfect GBA emulation on the Tapwave, with screenshots on their site (it's probabl still there), but apparently Nintendo stepped in and wouldn't let them get it signed for release. I don't know if I believe this though, because I got Firestorm and the GBC emulation SUCKED. Games were choppy and wouldn't even run full screen, so it seems hard to believe that they could get GBA working 100%.

3)What about Mame? Kawax? Final Burn? Speed? Accuaracy?

None of that stuff is on Palm OS AFAIK. There's only X-Cade, which emulates a few older arcade games like Galaga, Donkey Kong, etc.

4)What's the battery life like on this Zodiac? 6 hours? 8? 10? 12? Battery life is a key factor. I would need to get at least 6 to 7 hours continuous play on the Zodiac, mostly playing games , for me to consider it.

It really depends on what you're doing with the Zodiac for how long the battery lasts. I'd say it's got be somewhere between 6-7 hours.

5)Screen quality: What is the screen quality like, especially compared to the Nintendo DS, or even the PSOne TFT LCD screen? Does it blow away anything else? And can you adjust the contrast and brightness on the fly?

The screen is awesome. :) Straight from Tapwave:

But I can't get over how beautiful GBA games look on it. They're gorgeous.

Keep in mind that with the Zodiac, you have to pay for pretty much everything. You'd want to get the Zodiac 2, which goes for around $400 (last time I checked). The you'd need at least one SD card for storing all the ROMs and music/videos on, whidh run for $50-$100 each depending on brand and size, so it's expensive.

I got my Zodiac only after taking a bunch of older gaming crap and a bunch of DVDs and selling them off for about $350.

I also notice that some of the newer Pocket PCs go for the same price and are MUCH faster, but I don't know how they are for gaming unless there's a joystick adaptor available? I use my Zodiac strictly for listening to music (sound quality is awesome), playing movies, and emulation gaming. The Zodiac games all pretty much suck, although the racing game you get with the system free isn't bad and is impressive enough (it's fully 3D and has a good sense of speed). It's too bad that we'll never see what the Zodiac can really do, although there are some impressive games still in the works. There's this one Diablo-style game in the works that looks stunning...I forget the name though.

The only advantage the Zodiac has is its slim, small, extremely portable design. It's a really sexy handheld device, and the gaming-style button set up and analog stick works great for just about anything. There are only a very small amount of games that might give you some problems due to only having analog control.

My goodness, what a detailed and candid response. Thank you :)

Anyway after careful consideration, I have decided to hold off on getting one, due to the GBA having what I consider to be the best 2D game library for gaming on the go. $400 + an extra couple hundred for the all the other stuff is a little steep considering there's no GBA emu for it. Had it had one, that would've been a totally different ballgame. Anyway, I have made a thread over at "Emiboards" discussing why will continue to enjoy my GBA and will hold off on getting either Zodiac or a GP32. You can check it out *here*

I have not however, ruled out getting a pocket PC. Infact I have taken a hard look at the *OQO*. I mean good greif!!! A fucking 1Ghz/20gb handheld the size of a GBASP!!! But....that price...hehe :)

I want an OQO too. :) Although I bet the battery life sucks and look at how quickly Pocket PCs are catching up. I realize there must a big difference between the hardware and the OS, but there's a Dell Pocket PC available that's got a 600mhz processor and retails for $400. That's already catching up to the 1ghz $2000 OQO!

But yeah, stick with your GBA Isamu. I personally think that the combination of NES, Genesis, and SNES games all one system alone kills everything else, but there's a lot of awesome GBA games out there.

With the Zodiac, I'd only recommend it if you want to make use of its other features and not just play games. But it's definitely the system's design that makes gaming on it so easy.

Yup. That Dell Axim and HP's iPaQ do look tempting. Infact , a couple more paychecks and I think I might spring for one.

One thing I'm curious about, are the mp3 players in these things. I am looking for something that can use a windows version of either Winamp or if not, at least Windows Media Player. The reason being, is there is a little application for either Winamp or WMP called DFX. Ever heard of it? Well it enhances the music quality in your player to absolutely killer levels! The difference is like night and day. So my question is what mp3 players can you use in these pocketPCs like iPaq and Axim? If they both run Microsoft Windows Mobile for Pocket PC is it safe to assume there is a version of Winamp for it?

Sorry for the bump but does anyone know if the gentlemen that makes those custom handhelds shown above is willing to make a custom PC Notebook/PS2 hybrid? Y'know, a PC notebook that would also double as a PS2, using the same LCD screen and DVD rom drive? That would be incredibly cool!
