Portable PC Gaming Thread | Play Crysis on a $99 tablet

I thought the new Intel atom chips were pushed back further into 2015.

CES is incredibly soon we will probably get a more concrete release date with some actual products being shown then.

I cant wait to see Asus's rumored Asus t90 chi and t100 chi.
I hope both will run Intel Core M...

I used to run Skyrim on my old Dell Venue 8 Pro, though I never got around to buying some gamepad overlay and for it and I didn't have a bluetooth controller at the time, so I just kinda forgot about it.

Maybe I'll buy the overlay and play Skyrim on the bus to/from classes.

For someone looking for a more traditional laptop form factor, I wholly recommend the Asus eeeBook X205. (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OBA5AZU/?tag=neogaf0e-20)

This guy has almost the same internals as some of the tablets in here, but with a ~8-9hr battery life, and built in keyboard, trackpad, two USB, and microhdmi out.

Also, this thing is tiny and cheap. I've seen them on sale at around $140-$170, and at their lowest $99 on black friday.

Idk I feel like a real netbook kind of cheapens it.

A question for brain_stew if he's still reading this, how can I plugin a portable hard drive/controller and still be able to charge the device? could I use a Micro Usb hub to use multiple usb devices while still being able to charge?

If you're referring to the Linx 7 then you may not be able to. Some users at HUKD have reported that this cable may be able to achieve this but YMMV:

http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=261632310201&alt=web

It will definitely not work with the HP Stream 7.

I only use HDMI and Bluetooth with mine so I haven't bothered buying one so I can't personally verify it works.

I finally got round to trying Crysis on my Linx 10.1 and bloody hell it actually runs and fairly decently too. All the settings were on low at 1024 x 786 but the fact it is running and fairly playable is staggering. Especially when I can't run the damn game on my i5 + GTX 670 and Windows 64bit (known problem that they will never fix).

Obviously these tablets will never replace a Desktop but they make a fantastic companion to a desktop. It is kinda mesmerizing to think that Crysis runs well on a sub 100 quid tablet when a few years ago I was struggling to get it running decently on a dual core with 8800gts. You have to wonder what it will be like 10 years from now.

CES is in 3 days and they may be showing off cherry trail which could double the graphics power.

I'll buy a Windows tablet in ~2 years so I can play all fighters up to Street Fighter V on the go :]

I have this laptop and I absolutely adore it.

My linx 7 just turned up. Quick question - I have an existing office 365 account but I don't want to use one of its 5 licenses on the tablet (as the tablet comes with a 1 year license anyway). Am I ok to sign in using my normal microsoft account?

My HP Stream 7 is now my primary Hearthstone playing device, it is perfect for it*. I tried FTL but before I found out about the touchpad software, it was too fiddly without. Great thread.

*if only battery life were slightly better.

I just read about Tegra X1. Looks pretty damn promising. I hope if it really putted on PCBoy it won't cost more than $300.
Slim chance in near time. One can dream.

Going to take a look at this today, has the same specs as the HP tablet (other than only being 16GB) but it also has HDMI and a USB port.

http://www.microcenter.com/product/439773/TW700_Tablet_-_Black#

I'd strongly recommend against any of the 16GB models. Once you've got Windows updated, there's barely any space at all left for programs. 32GB is a tight fit, but 16GB just isn't practical.

Its a shame as well because a full size USB port is a great feature.

This looks really cool, I'd love to play Fallout 3 and Skyrim on the go. Hopefully in a couple years we have some cheap tablets like this that are made for gaming so they can run these titles even better, and maybe even with built in controls for added portablility.

Man, I am really excited for devices like these, though right now I'm thinking it'd be best to wait for Windows 10 before spending the money.

I've always found it hard to get into portable gaming, but having a device that shares a library with my primary gaming machine really changes the dynamic. The problem is I don't really like playing on portable hardware, but as a convenience for when I don't have access to my PC? That I can also do work on when I need to? That's excellent.

Hoping for this, too. Someone needs to make a Windows tablet with a form factor like the Vita or Wii U GamePad. Would be amazing!

I picked up the ASUS VivoTab 8 M81C-B1-MSBK Signature Edition Tablet from the MS Store for $130 and some change w/ coupon codes last month when they were having their big sales. 1" bigger screen and 2GB of RAM instead of 1, threw a 64GB microSD card in it, and paired up a DS4 with it using DS4Windows. Excellent little gaming machine to play in bed and play on, Steam Streaming works really well on it too, played through a bunch of Shadow of Mordor that way.

Sorry for the double post/bump but are there any reports or videos of Dark Souls running more or less playable on tablets?

Has anyone tried out any of the CCG/TCGs on Steam, regarding touch interfaces? Would love a slew of touch-centric card games for the Transformer.

Oh, and Warhammer 40K: Armageddon runs beautifully with touch interface.

any good way to mount a tablet to a 360 pad? I want to keep using my normal 360 pad as the range reaches my PC, but I can't seem to find a neat clip. For DS4 I could get the Nyko smartclip or the Sony one.

Would the Nyko smartclip for Xbox one fit the 360?

Off topic but Crysis played perfectly fine on my i7, gtx670 on win 8.1 64bit and still does.

I've been enjoying some older games on my Asus 205t it has the same ATOM Z3735 1.33 GHz processor as the HP stream 7, except it's an 11" laptop, no touch screen, and some serious battery life.

On Black Friday I went to pick up a laptop for my wife. While waiting in line at Staples they asked if I wanted a ticket for the $99 laptop. I figured if it could play videos it would be nice for the kids to use in the car, not to mention the Windows 8.1 license. Turns out it's a pretty nice machine.

The battery in the Asus 205t is amazing. My sons traded it back and forth in the car on a trip and 4 hours of playing left me with 50% battery remaining. Usually it only needs charged once every couple days.

I was a little more conservative than most of the people in this thread but I've had good luck with the following games:

Risk of Rain - Runs Great

Minecraft - Good enough.

UT2004 - Very impressed started with everything on low, and was getting 80+FPS,
turned up some setting so it's above 30FPS.

Master of Orion 2, Civ 3, and Alpha Centauri all run fantastic as expected.

Vice City - Perfect

After stumbling across this thread I'm installing TF2.

Ok, so for awhile I've been kicking around the idea to build a nVidia Shield-like device to stream games to in my living room. (I can't purchase an actual Shield because I run an AMD set-up). This thread has really got me to thinking.

My budget is around $250. All I really want to do is to stream Steam games from my PC in the other room while I sit on my couch and play while the TV is otherwise occupied. Additionally, the ability to stream HD media, run games/emulators natively, productivity etc would be nice bonuses.

For starters, as a controller I'm looking at the iPega PG-9023 (~$30 at Amazon). This will work with a Windows 8 device, right? Several people have mentioned it upthread and other places. I looked at other controllers, but most will only fit phones, or look unwieldy with a tablet (gameklip, nyko clips, etc).

As for the tablet, I have it narrowed down to several options. These are the ones I'm looking at.

HP Stream 7 ($99 at Amazon)
7" screen
Intel Atom Z3735G Quad Core Processor (1.8GHz) (is the 1.8 a typo? should be 1.3?)
1GB RAM
32GB internal storage
microSD
microUSB

HP Stream 8 ($180 at Amazon)
8" screen
Intel Atom Z3735G Quad Core Processor (1.3 GHz)
1GB RAM
32GB internal storage
microSD
microUSB
4G connectivity with 200mb/month free (actually useful, since I have strictly metered Internet)

Winbook Tw700 ($95 at Amazon, no Microcenters nearby)
7" screen
Intel Atom Z3735G Quad Core Processor (1.3 GHz)
1GB RAM
16GB internal storage
microSD
microUSB
microHDMI
USB

Winbook Tw801 (~$190 at Amazon, no Microcenters nearby)
8" screen
Intel Atom Z3735G Quad Core Processor (1.3 GHz)
2GB RAM
32GB internal storage
microSD
microUSB
microHDMI
USB

ASUS VivoTab Note 8 (~$149 at Microsoft)
Intel Atom Z3745G Quad Core Processor (1.3 GHz)
2GB RAM
32GB internal storage
microSD
microUSB

As far as I can tell, they all come with a year of Office 365.

Looks like the Winbook Tw801 would far and away be my best bet if I could get it at the $140 Microcenter is advertising, but I don't have any within several hours of me. I guess I could try eBay, but I've been leery of it the past several years. Also, I'm not too familiar with the brand. But it looks like it has great features for the price, even at $190 even. The microHDMI would really be nice to hook up to the TV when needed.

On the other hand, I think I could get by with the HP Stream 7, if all I wanted to do was stream Steam games, right? I don't know, what do you guys think?

Oh, and Warhammer 40K: Armageddon runs beautifully with touch interface.

Pokémon TCG is touch compatible and so is Hearthstone I think.

I'm looking for a Tablet that can basically play League of Legends with no lagging/tearing at mid settings. So far I'm looking at the Asus T100 and was wondering if anyone better at this stuff could tell me if this is good enough or should I just go ahead and go for the T200TA for $200 more unless someone has something else in mind?

Also, these tablets are compatible with a bluetooth mouse right or do I have to get a USB one?

Does anyone have a recommendation for a small netbook that could provide similar game performance? I have a few older games I like to play, and I would prefer a (very) small notebook form-factor.

I've been thinking about a Linx but I'm just wondering, if i were to use the HDMI out to connect to my TV would i still be limited to the the 1280x800 resolution or would it be able to output it to 1080p?

Dont consider any of them with less than 2GB of ram. Out of your options the vivotab seems the best bet.

I went ahead and pulled the trigger on the T200TA since it was essentially double the specs, also got that $70 amazon credit for applying for the credit card so that helped make me feel better about it too. I got next day shipping so I'll see it tomorrow, I'll throw some impressions on here when I get some games up and running. Probably try League of Legends and WoW to start out.

They're compatible with both.

I appreciate it, thanks!

I caught the Winbook Tw801 on Amazon for $159 + $6 shipping, so I went ahead and pulled the trigger. The microHDMI out was too much to resist.

Now I'm just trying to find a case for it. I'm looking for a bluetooth keyboard/case so I can do some work on it, but so far no luck. Since it's a storebrand, there aren't any mass produced cases from Belkin, Logitech, or the like.

I'm on the lookout for a decent, generic 8" tablet keyboard folio if anyone knows of one.
