Portable PC Gaming Thread | Play Crysis on a $99 tablet

After seeing the Grid Autosport video I tend to agree. Distant future though.

Not so distant in fact. Keep in mind that the purpose of these chips isnt gaming. But with Cherrytrail coming, performance will double.
Now, with Maxwell GPUs, there's nothing preventing a manufacturer to build a tablet for gaming.

Just ordered a linx 7" from ebay for £60 - thanks to brain_stew for linking me to the deal.

I only plan to use it for steam home streaming, and I'll experiment on whether my wife can use it as a general tablet (I also like the idea of the split screen for watching a video while browsing gaf)

What is the best way to use this as a remote play device? eg one of those controllers that clamp around it, or a 360 wired pad, or use a spare PS3 controller?

Nyko make smartphone clips for various controllers that can take up to an 8 inch tablet. Those might be your best option.

Sony do one for the PS4 too - might be a bit heavy with a tablet on top but I'd like to try at least.

So what controller is the easiest (and/or best) to get hooked up to a windows tablet (I assume its the same as a PC)

- Wireless 360 pad (Probably not, I'd need a dongle hanging off the tablet?)
- wired 360 pad (but then I'd have a cable dangling around too)
- wireless PS3 pad (I have a spare one of these)
- wireless PS4 pad (I don't have a spare one, I'd need to buy one, and in the UK they cost nearly as much at the tablet did)

ipega PG-9023 controller

Just because you can doesn't mean you should.
Why shouldn't you stream from your pc (if you have the right hardware) instead playing it on minimum settings?
I get that that people love playing on tablets but honestly I would rather play nothing than "tablet" version of the showed games. Yuck.

Im actually using my Razer Edge (the non pro) for everything related to portable pc gaming.

I know its a powerful tablet but it can pretty much sum it up what can be done with a bit more of power.

Even using the iGPU i still get decent framerates.

Games like Grid 2 can run maxed out at 35/40 fps of average, and if you disable global illumination it can even push it further, on a 1366*768 screen.

Emulators are a joy excluding PCSX2 that needs some serious horsepower, the cpu just dont cut it, but it does on alot of games (Tekken 4 is ok, but Tag and 5 is not).

Even Dragon Age Origins with high settings can do pretty much 30-35fps of average. Dial down the settings to medium and youll be happy on the couch.

Surface 4 probably will be the ideal, with new cpus and Intel Iris Pro gpu.

Just a word of advice: stay away from iPega controllers. Most of the time games dont recognize it and x360ce proves to be an hard time for everything since its no where user friendly.

Better use a SixAxis or a DS3 with a BT Dongle dedicated to it, and SCPServer.

The thing is... you can do both. Also, there's not demanding games that runs great natively... and I'm not even talking about indies or visual novels too !

I would suggest PS4 controller, 360 needs to occupy the USB, PS3 drivers will disable your Bluetooth.

I love my dell venue, I can't believe I payed so little for such a great hardware, can't wait for cherrytrail news! I hope someone creates a tablet with a form similar to the Wii U gamepad.

First half 2015 or so.

Cool :) maybe I'll upgrade my T100 then

For those looking to incorporate a controller into a tablet I would recommend this:

Works on my 10 inch T100 though it does look a bit funny

Is there any other recommended tablets such as the Linx 7 you mentioned?

All these tablets are created by the same Chinese ODMs and are based on the same Intel reference design. Just be conscious of the specs (like HDMI out, 32GB eMMC etc.) and you can mostly ignore the brand names.

The Linx brand is what they're appearing under in the UK, but the same design will be available in other markets under different local brands.

Hopefully windows game developers start to consider better implementations of touch screen controls (for turn based games etc.), requiring external control accessories can become unwieldy.

Steam in-home streaming on a Venue 8 Pro.

Try TouchMousePointer:

In fact I think that should be linked to in the OP. Its essential for navigating the desktop on the smaller tablets when out and about and you don't have a mouse handy.

Pa_C_library.png

this is a small part of my Steam library that I do not feel I have the time /'d rather play on a pad. What do think GAf? In I can play this on a $ 99 tablet I think I'll buy one.

Damn it ORANGE! First the 21:9 thread now this! You seemed to have tapped into my PC vices as of late :p

I was chatting to wilflare a while back about the Linx 7 and moreover various other x86 Win tablets. Not too sure on the viability of them as stand alone gaming platforms other than older or easier to run titles on the lower cost tablets (especially streaming and loading heavy games with the low speed of the built in storage) but leveraging Steam's In Home Streaming pretty much sold me on them.

One thing to have a look out for folks looking for on screen touch controls is GestureWorks (conveniently on sale during the Steam Winter Sale).

Totally recommending it.
Should be in OP. It's just a necessity for visual novels or even some point and clicks.
You can have digital buttons but also gestures to replace some buttons or such.

Removable battery

I'm not a fan of removable batteries personally, far too finicky to be practical and they compromise overall battery capacity. If you choose a device that is chargeable via USB you're better off using a portable powerbank to charge your devices on the go imo.

For anyone looking to convert these into a HTPC make sure you have a 2.1a USB charger so that you're never draining more power than your are supplying. As for controls, I went with this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00MLDP7CK/

Its not the sturdiest unit, but its compact, rechargeable and has a very nice keyboard and touchpad and most importantly its very cheap at just £20. Connects via Bluetooth.

You really want to use Bluetooth for the controller, so a PS4 pad would be the best option for easy 360 controller emulation though I don't have one to test.

As a general tablet I'm a big fan, just bear in mind that battery life won't match some of the more expensive Android options although the Android tablets at this pricepoint are generally terrible. If you're computer savvy I think you'll appreciate the flexibility over an Android device but others will be put off by the lack of apps, the need to run Windows Defender and to babysit Windows update.

Now, with Maxwell GPUs, there's nothing preventing a manufacturer to build a tablet for gaming.

Well Cherry Trail will have 16 Execution Units compared to 4 in Bay Trail, so while TDP and memory bandwidth constraints will prevent it from being far from a 4x increase in performance it should be a very significant leap forward for graphics performance.

You'll never see Maxwell in a $100 Bay Trail / Cherry Trail tablet as its only possible to hit these pricepoints by using a single SOC, and there's no chance that Intel will be integrating Nvidia IP on their SOCs this decade.

What's the likelihood that a hypothetical Surface Pro 4 next year, the highest their spec, could run games like Crysis 1, Total War, Titanfall, Skyrim etc at high settings(not max) and decent framerates.

I use Steam Home Streaming with my Xbox wireless dongle still connected to the host PC. It's a slightly more elegant solution and you reduce latency a little bit. Your mileage may vary depending on how far away you plan on going from your PC though.

Most likely they will be able to if they have best intel gpu

Can I play Baldur's Gate on it ?

Never tested it but yes, it should run fine. Anything upto and including Half Life 2, Doom 3 and Far Cry can generally be assumed to run fine and without performance issues as long as they don't have specific issues with running on Windows 8.1.

Something just hit me. Might be worth adding to OP maybe.

Things to look for
Expansion
Micro SD Slots (these tablets tend to run very low in the memory department so expandable store is a must)

Processors
Atom Z3735 (or equivalent) minimum. (the higher the number the better)

Screen resolution
7/8" 1280x800 absolute minimum (higher is better)
10/11" 1366x768 absolute minimum (higher is better)

Extras to look for
HDMI/Micro HDMI out
USB port
Mobile broadband
Removable battery

Thanks! added

Ooh, good point. The dongle is on a pretty long cable, I might be able to position it towards the living room and just use that directly. Will try that first.

The range on the wireless 360 pads is pretty good, no need to run the cable very far. I have my PC upstairs in the bedroom, and the wireless controller works perfectly in my basement two levels down. I run an HDMI cable down to the TV in the basement for big picture mode.

Why on earth didn't I think to try this? The dongle gets very good range so I wouldn't have to move anything even though they're on different floors.

In fact I've already tried a similar solution when using Splashtop to stream PC games to an iPad (poorly). My dongle is currently hooked up to the living room PC so I'd have to move it up to the main rig on the top floor but this can work. Now I've got an Xbox One I can just use a long Micro USB with that to hook a pad up to that PC.

Considering how cheap these are, how cheap could they make a micro box? No battery or screen needed - bring your own keyboard, mouse and display. I'd pay £50 and put one on every TV in the house for media duties

This would probably be your best bet although it's a lot more expensive.

The reason this are so cheap is because Microsoft basically pays companies to put windows on devices 8" and below they use that to subsidize the cost.

Fake edit
Here's a cheaper ($150) model with a celeron that should be comparable to the atoms

There have been times when I've been away from my house and wished I could pull out a device and play something like Civ V or Rogue Legacy (and not have to buy the latter again on Vita). The closest thing we have to that now is a bulky laptop.

Picked up a Stream 8 today in part due to this thread and the fact that I'll be doing significant traveling in 2015.

I can tell you Don't Starve is 100% playable (settings turned to low/off where applicable). Will try Don't Starve Together when I get home and get on my own internet.

Binding of Isaac: Rebirth runs playably in window mode (covering the majority of the desktop), but slows down in fullscreen. Have not investigated any possible optimization yet.

Tried them with a bluetooth keyboard/mouse I had around work.

The fact that those two are playable makes the purchase worthwhile to me. I'm going to investigate Spelunky, Killing Floor (for shits and giggles mostly) and maybe a handful of other games. Mostly those without videos yet. That will either be tonight or tomorrow when I get some time.

Try changing the power settings to "performance" or equivelant.

Very nice thread to see popup. I ordered one of these tablets from Amazon on Black Friday but haven't done much gaming on it yet. This gives some ideas of things to try.

Gestureworks Gameplay is cool but only works with direct X 9 games or something. (It didn't work for certain games when I bought it)

I'd recommend virtualgamepad. Works on everything, great ui and easy customization. But I think you might need to play games in borderless full screen in some occasions.
